If you wanted to keep a rose bed neat, you needed to tend to it. Trim the roses, keep pests away, pull up weeds. If not, the roses will die… Daniel knew that it was his fault for not seeing Niklas much anymore. He could blame it on being busy, schoolwork, quidditch, Silvia and… Sun. Yet, at the same time he could not help but to also think that the blame could be on the Slytherin as well. He could have approached him more himself; poked him in class, sent him notes, demanded to meet – just like Sun did. Daniel did not know where he had Niklas, to be honest. To him, they were just friends who had kissed now and then… Nothing more than that. But at the same time, he felt like it was time to set things straight, feeling that he should be the bigger person.
Niklas was easier to approach than Silvia or Sun. Daniel usually had the situation in control and could pretty much direct it the way he wanted. In fact, sometimes it felt like he could bulldozer over the other Slytherin without him saying anything about it. There was no challenge in that… Not that Niklas was a bad guy at all, and Daniel was sure he would be a good friend in the future… Maybe? Therefore, he had taken the first step and sent a message for the Slytherin to meet him in the lavatory on second floor. The one where Moaning Myrtle was usually haunting. Daniel didn’t think it would matter much because nothing would happen. So now, he stood there, leaned casually against a sink waiting for Niklas, while the ghost was nowhere to be seen.
Ever since the meeting between himself and Daniel he had been trying to keep himself from being to obvious toward the other. It was difficult not to stare, not to pair up with him in classes, to pretend they weren't friends. But it had been clear when they left that dungeon room that it had to be that way or he would not have Daniel at all. With the year priors accusations, he didn't want to make the same mistakes as he had then. Daniel was, after all, the only friend he had on top of being the only person who made his stomach all tingly.
So when he had gotten his message he had tried not to show how excited he was that the other wanted to see him. The lavatory on the second floor was not an odd place for them to meet up since no one truly went in there often, and they had met in equally strange places to avoid people knowing about them. As soon as it was time he had to steady himself so he didn't run, heart thumping in his chest as he made steady progress to the loo and entered just to see Daniel waiting. "Daniel." He smiled at him, happy and oblivious, as he got closer to him. "I'm glad you wanted to see me."

Daniel had not been aware that he had been holding his breath, and the moment Niklas entered through the door, the Gryffindor exhaled as if he had been suffocating. Quickly, he found his wand and pointed it at the door behind him, locking it. Only Myrtle could hear them now, but she did not seem to be present in any of the stalls – he had checked. “You are?” Daniel had not mean to be so sarcastically cold when hearing Niklas was happy to see him. If Niklas had wanted to see him, he could have contacted him. Yet, it had not been Daniel’s intention to be so bitter in this meeting, so he quickly shook his head. “I am sorry… I mean…”
Niklas had been Daniel’s first actual crush, and he had been his first kiss. The two of them had history, no matter how messed up it was… And now, he would be the first one Daniel would have to say these things to. It felt like a breakup, even though there was nothing to actually break up. It was all in his head, and he knew that he shouldn’t be dramatic about it. For once, he hoped that Niklas would laugh at his face and tell him that everything was just in his head. He had nothing to worry about - Niklas did not even like him. “So, that thing we talked about last term… You know…” Gosh, he was really bad at this. “About meeting up and… Well…” He did not really have to specify anything. “I can’t do that.” Daniel finally finished. “I…”… like someone else; his head finished for him. “I have a girlfriend.” He decided to say instead. “It won’t do.”
"Of course." Niklas was always happy when Daniel wanted to be around him. The deal they had made was often hard for him to maintain as he often found his mind, and therefore his gaze, falling to the other more than he would ever tell him. His friend had made it clear that no one was to know about them and that, to him, included keeping his eyes to himself. But Daniel's tone made him wonder if he had managed to mess up, again. "Its okay."
Had he upset Daniel somehow? He had done his best to keep things subtle and try not to say anything that others might take wrong. "I remember." He said simply when Daniel brought up last term and the agreement they had come to. And the kissing that had come after which still left his stomach fluttery to think about. That feeling came and went immediately hearing that Daniel could no longer agree to that. At first he had thought maybe he didn't want to hide anymore. But it was worse than that.
Confusion wrote itself clearly across his face as his eyes canned Daniel's, trying to see if he was joking. There was no smile evident. No smirk of glint in his eyes and he seemed completely serious about this conversation. "A...girlfriend?" His heart sank into the floor as he tried to process what was being said. What wouldn't do? The girlfriend? Their friendship? Their secret meetings to be alone together? Logically his mind jumped to the only conclusion that made the most sense. "Are you...breaking up from...us? Did I do something wrong? I...I did everything you asked?"

“Yeah, a girlfriend.” Daniel said chewing on his bottom lip. It was good to use Silvia as his scapegoat. After all, the two of them were very public. Seemingly power couple of this term. People did not see the annoyance and nagging behind the fake facades the two of them pulled off. It had started a couple of months ago. After the fluttering heart had settled and he and Silvia had actually gotten to know one another. It did not help the fact that Daniel became more and more distant, together with Silvia herself. And at some point, it felt like they were just dating for the show. “Yeah… You know Silvia? She is in the same year as you. Plays chaser for the Gryffindor team.” That was pretty much how Daniel could describe her. The boy should not be so vague.
When hearing the words actually come out from Niklas’ mouth, they broke Daniel’s heart a little, and he found himself saying. “No.”Wait, what? Yes, yes, he was breaking up with him.“I mean…” It had worked more smoothly in his head, but now that he was actually facing the guy, it was much harder. He reached out for Niklas’ hand to give it a squeeze. “You didn’t do anything wrong, Nicky. It’s just… Everything gets too much… Not that you get too much, but everything. Silvia, studies…”Sun.“… you.” He swallowed and had no idea what else to say. He has had this whole well-rehearsed script for this meeting, but now his mind was completely blank. “I can’t do this to her, you know?” It was easy to use Silvia as an argument again, and he dared to wrap his arms around Niklas as to pull him in for a hug.
"I...yes I know who she is." It was said quietly but definitely loud enough for Daniel to hear. Of course he had seen them together but he had never suspected they were seeing one another. As he said the girl played for the Gryffindor team so he had just assumed they were close friends. The truth was worse. The fluttery feeling he had since he had gotten the others note had faded into an awful pit in his stomach, making him feel a tad sick at the quick bursting of that happy bubble.
No? Niklas looked hopeful for all of a few seconds until his friend, boyfriend, whatever he was to him backtracked on his initial answer. Tears prickled at his eyes when his hand was taken, looking down as his fingers curled around his weakly. This had to be some sort of nightmare right? This wasn't real! If he could only wake up and this was all just a manifestation of his fears then maybe he could talk to the real Daniel and be sure they were okay.
But it wasn't.
"Everything? D...Daniel I...I can do better? Please?" As his heart started to race he picked their joined hands up and held it close to his sternum as if that would help. he had only just gotten his friend back and this felt like he was losing him again. Only this time he wasn't sure what he had done wrong for him to leave. It stung a little when Daniel said he couldn't do this to her. The implication being that, of the two of them, his friend cared more for her. "Why? Why her and not...me?"

Why did it feel like it was him who had his heart broken too? Why was this so freaking difficult? It was not supposed to be! Daniel had rehearsed this inside his head for so many times, and he had been confident when he had asked Niklas to meet here. He was not supposed to be the one who felt so hurt, but still as he hugged Niklas tightly into his body, feeling the familiar scent of his hair rise to his nostrils and he ran his hand over it, getting a reminder of how soft it was – and his heart was aching… so much. “No, please don’t say that. Don’t… Like…” Daniel shook his head. “You are perfect the way you are, Niklas. Don’t ask if there is anything you can do to do better. It’s not really about that.” It was not even about Silvia, which was probably why at the realization of it, it made his throat tighten as if his own body was trying to prevent him from speaking anymore lies.
Yet, they still dropped from his lips – wrapped themselves around the actual truth that worked as their core. “It was not really meant to go this far. We started out for fun… But then it developed and now it is out of control, and I really like…” Daniel was not even sure who he was talking about anymore. “… I really like her. I don’t want to hurt her.” He turned his head to look at the Slytherin. “I like you too though. You are really sweet, caring and the best friend one could wish for.” He had his hand move to rest on his cheek, while it felt like his lunges had forgotten how to breathe. Daniel leaned in to rest his forehead against Niklas’. “Can I just… kiss you? One last time.” He then asked with a whisper.
Out of character TAGGED: @niklas NOTES: Soooooo dramatic!
With his arms around Daniel he just wanted the other to stay with him. From the sounds of it that was not going to be a wish he was granted. For the second time he was going to lose his only friend. But it was more than that too. They were more than just friends, right? They had kissed, multiple times, and he had thought their secret agreement had meant more than just friends. Perhaps that had been naive as he now stood here with the other who was leaving him behind. For a girl.
"Am I?" Niklas sounded like he didn't believe that, and how could he? Even when he did what he was told to it was wrong. It was almost worse to hear Daniel say he was perfect how he was despite the fact that the other was breaking their understanding. Their agreement. "Then...what is it about?" He asked almost desperately, knowing he would change or do anything he could if it meant his one friend didn't leave him behind.
"I-I can stay secret, I promise. I do not mind no one knowing. Please do not leave me?" His stomach twisted painfully when he heard that this had gone to far, that it had just been fun. Fun? Swallowing he pulled back a little to look at him, trying to find the right words that would keep Daniel with him somehow. All he found he could do was lean his head into the hand on his cheek, fighting back tears as he asked him for one last kiss. "I...if...if this is what you want...then yes."

Daniel had not expected Niklas to ask so many questions. He had hoped that the other would be as quiet as he usually was. Actually, in his head, he had imagined Niklas just saying “OK” and let it be it. Maybe he even shrugged and walked away. But it didn’t happen, and the more he spoke the worse Daniel felt. He understood why Niklas was hurt, but why was his own heart aching too? It felt unfair, since he was the one ending it. It was as if his stomach twisted and turned in a dark pit of nervousness and anxiety. “Yes, yes you are.” Damn it. Was he really going to say this? “It’s not you, it’s me.” The most cliché line dropped from his lips, and Daniel almost cringed at himself.
“I know you can keep it a secret… I just…” He chewed so hard on his bottom lip that it became all red. “I don’t think it’s fair to her…” Silvia was a good excuse, even though the two of them had hit rock bottom too. It was too hurtful to see Niklas like that, and Daniel was battling his own burning sensation behind his eyelids. “I am so sorry, Nicky.” His voice broke the moment he said that nickname, and to shut himself up he gave Niklas that last kiss he had asked for. Carefully pressing his lips against his, with that hand still lingering on his cheek and allowing his own heart drop into the same oblivion as his stomach was currently in.

It was just another day of doing patrol duty for Silvia. As a Prefect, she got plenty of that and was growing to regard it as a waste of time. The worst she ever caught was a second year sneaking out just before curfew and a couple of third years trying to stuff a set of armour full of dungbombs. And her today's route would go past Moaning Myrtle's bathroom, which meant a risk of meeting the gloomy ghost. Worse, she could hear mad cackling in the corrdor upstairs, signifying that Peeves was up to something. Not her problem, though - some Hufflepuff Prefect had been assigned that area today. The blonde only made sure to walk quietly so as not to attract the poltergeist's attention.
Just as she was passing the bathroom, she heard voices inside. Two of them, both male. Ugh. Was this some prank attempt? Last term someone caused quite a mess there by experimenting with fireworks. She should probably at least check out what was going on now and chase the boys out of there.
Silvia reached for the handle and opened the door... Then drew in a sharp breath and very quickly closed the door again. What. What did she just see? Was that really Daniel kissing another boy? Her brain was struggling to process it, she felt confused and also a bit embarrased for seeing what she wasn't supposed to and... why was she feeling like that? This was her boyfriend doing that stuff, behind her back!
The fifth year threw the door open again. Her confusion had been replaced by rapidly rising anger. "What the hell, Daniel? Why are you snogging..." she suddenly recognized the other, "Niklas Faulkner?"
"Daniel..." It was him, it wasn't fair to Silvia, and he was sorry. Somehow no matter what Daniel said he couldn't help but feel as though his heart was being hacked out. Hearing Daniel apologize him with that nickname which now just felt so final, in a way that made his eyes burn. The kiss too felt different than all their previous ones. He didn't even get to enjoy the kiss at all before the door behind them got thrown open and a voice assaulted his ears. A familiar voice.
Niklas broke off the kiss to turn a little a darkness in his eyes as he spotted Silvia. The girl that Daniel apparently liked much better than himself, and he found a clawing hot feeling in his chest. Jealousy, though he didn't know it. The tone of her voice made his stomach twist too. But he also didn't want to say anything, his eyes leaving her to look at Daniel. What would his friend say this time? Would the blame be again pushed on Niklas and if so...what did that mean?

It was hard to distinguish one emotion from another when he kissed Niklas, but something inside of him felt like it broke, and the kiss was like he was clinging to a friendship he was afraid he had just ruined. The sound of Silvia’s voice made him drop right back to present time, and Daniel immediately pushed (no, shoved) himself away from Niklas in sheer surprise. His eyes darted from the boy to his girlfriend and then back at the boy again before panicky landing on the door as he briefly wondered if he could make a run for it. Obliviate the entire room and run. Jump on a broomstick and fly away from Hogwarts. After all, he was 17 now – he had his O.W.L.s… Did he really need N.E.W.T.s?
And then it suddenly hit him; what if she told Sun? She could not tell Sun! Even though they had their little “agreement”, so it shouldn’t really matter, but he would rather have it come from his own mouth. It almost felt insignificant that Silvia knew, he just didn’t want the other boy to know it. “It’s nothing! It’s not what it looks like!” Daniel’s voice was as high-pitched as it could come, and he stepped even further away from Niklas, blushing deeply. “He asked me to kiss him, because he wanted an advice on kissing… Right Faulkner?” It felt like their 4’th year was repeating itself – getting caught kissing… Now the rumour will spread, again… And Daniel’s reputation would be ruined – again. Screw the reputation though. What would Sun say to a rumour like that?
He felt a wave of guilt and regret flush over him. Why did he have to kiss Niklas? Why?

Niklas Faulkner. Silvia had only had one interaction with him before - the Potions lesson at the start of the term. He struck her as an overly shy and unfortunately clumsy boy, that's it. Some time later, a stale gossip story reached her; one about this very shy and clumsy boy forcing a kiss on Daniel. It didn't seem right to inquire what exactly happened - Daniel himself never mentioned it, so he probably didn't want to think about it anymore. She simply started shunning the Slytherin along with everyone else, never partnering up with him in classes and ignoring his presence.
And never did she question the truthfulness of the story... until now. Both of them looked guilty and anxious. Daniel's explanation didn't do anything to help the situation, either. Silvia gave a sarcastic laugh. "How dumb do you think I am?" Dumb enough to date him and trust him to remain loyal, she realized. So pretty damn dumb. "You're giving a kissing lesson to someone who assaulted you before? In an abandoned toilet? Oh, please, Daniel... Why didn't you just tell me you're gay? Why did you date me? To hide it from everyone, while you kiss your boytoy in secret? You're such a coward for a Gryffindor. Go be happy with this... this... loser!" She threw a contemptuous look at Niklas before continuing to glare at her boyfriend. No. Not boyfriend anymore. "We're done, Daniel. Try to grow up and stop lying to everyone around you." She turned on her heel and stormed off, slamming the door loudly behind her.
The immediate shove broke his heart because it proved that his friend, the person he wanted to be with, didn't want to be with him. At worst it was because he was ashamed of being seen with him. It wasn't like he was the only one, no one wanted to be seen with or anywhere near him these days. A dark twist of rage churned in his stomach that did not show itself on his face. No, he was much to good at keeping himself looking neutral after years of being told he had to. The longer he watched Daniel and registered the emotion as panic the more he, too, wanted to leave.
"Nothing?" There was this strange buzzing in his ears that was making him have so much trouble doing anything but repeating what Daniel was saying. Luckily he didn't have time to try and lie to Silvia too as she called him out immediately. She called him a loser and he looked away from both of them. Maybe he really was a loser if so many people said it then it had to be true, right? His father, his only friend, the people close to him all thought the same thing. The door slamming made him jump a little and his eyes finally came to rest on Daniel. "Do you...really think we are nothing?"
