It would have been almost refreshing to see Calvin without his bravado, seemingly feeling quite embarrassed and insecure as his mixup, if Desiree didn’t feel so bad for him. He seemed absolutely mortified, looking down at his shoes, and she felt the need to reassure him. Moving closer, she put a hand on his arm in an attempt to comfort him. “It is okay. My accent can be quite strong, you just misunderstood me, hm?” She tried to give him an easy out so he wouldn’t have to feel so self-conscious. In reality, she knew that was not the reason, but she did not care that he thought she meant fairies with tails, nor did she judge him for it. She simply knew she missed seeing his smile, even for that mere moment.
She listened to Calvin ramble as she changed, glad he seemed back to his normal confident self, complete with compliments as he saw her for the first time in his clothes. Her cheeks pinked a tinge, although they were not nearly as red as Calvin’s. She quietly wondered if that was still from his earlier embarrassment, but decided not to bring it up just in case. “I appreciate the offer, but I’d be happy to return them to you.” As she said that, she got an odd pang in her stomach. Did she want to keep his clothes? Why? They were not up to her normal designer standard, nor were they particularly fashionable. They were, however, comfortable… and they smelled like him… “Are you sure they wouldn’t fit? I certainly wouldn’t mind seeing you in a skirt.” She flashed him a flirtatious wink in return, giggling a bit at the mental image. Maybe she’d have to revisit that idea sometime in the future… that is, if Calvin was even amenable to the idea.
Desiree could feel herself getting warmer at Calvin’s allusion, their proximity not helping matters. She swallowed and averted her eyes for a second, a lock of hair falling from behind her ear to cover her face. She was so preoccupied with her own emotions she did not notice Calvin’s somewhat odd behavior, as well as his rapidly declining physical state. Her head snapped up when he mentioned a possible relationship between the two. Coupled with his comment about not liking being teased, Desiree began to wonder if he actually was serious. Was this not all just a silly game for him? Just a run of the mill flirtatious back and forth, but ultimately nothing more?
It was then she noticed the odd twitching in his eye following some comments regarding french kissing. She rolled her eyes at the subject, surprised such a line had not come sooner. Definitely not Calvin’s best work, nor his most original. She was about to respond in kind, when she noticed he was holding himself. Odd… was he cold? “Are you okay?” She asked, a slight worried look on her face. “Are you cold? I can give you back your jacket.”
Calvin didn’t seem quite as concerned about his physical state at that moment, so Desiree let it slide, falling back into their playful banter. “Oh, so you would like me to touch you then?” She playfully teased, laughing gently at how quickly he took back his original comment. She was glad at least he was not offended at her slight peeking, although she did wonder if he had snuck one as well when she had been changing.
For a moment, the conversation seemed to shift into more banal conversation, discussing family, when all of a sudden Calvin took a turn. Only a mere moment after declaring himself dizzy, he face planted onto the lawn. “Mon dieu!” Desiree exclaimed, quickly crouching down to check on him. “Are you okay, Calvin?” He mentioned something about having drunk too much of the pond water, causing Desiree to swear under her breath.
She knew such a task should not have been done by students, particularly not as a detention task. Now here they were, without their wands, Calvin obviously sick from something in that water. She was feeling fine so far, but she had only been in the water about waist high. Calvin had actually fallen in at one point, and obviously had swallowed some water as a result. If she’d had her wand she could have helped him more effectively, but as it was, she felt helpless.
She knew there was no point in staying there waiting for someone to find them. It was late and there was no telling how long it would be until somebody came by that area. Making a quick decision, Desiree took off Calvin’s jacket, bundled it up, and tucked it under his head. His forehead was coated in sweat, presumably from a fever. She brushed some hair out of his face, her fingers lingering for a moment. “You stay here. I will try to find somebody to help, or find that professor with my wand.” She stood back up straight and began heading back towards the school. “I will be back. Do not move,” she called back, picking up her pace. She felt horrible leaving him there in such a state, but what more could she do? She was helpless without a wand, and she definitely wasn’t strong enough to carry him back.
Luckily she didn’t have to go too far into the school to find help, as the professor who had assigned her the detention was currently returning to dismiss them. The rest seemed to happen in a blur as they returned together, the professor summoned a stretcher to bring Calvin to the infirmary, and Desiree grabbed her wet clothes, as well as his bag that had been left behind, and trailed after them.
