CALVIN KLEIN was successful and kept walking forward until he had to decide again. Left, right, or forward?
SILVIA ODETTE STIRLING went right and walked for a bit before she hit a dead end. There was a dementor there but it ignored her. She went back. Her sapphire stopped hissing. Left, right, or forward?
DESIREE FONTAINE dropped her items in the water but only the key fell in the water. Nothing happened to it. The other two items missed.
((Sorry, only one at a time, and I random generated to see which one got in.))
ARES CRIVELLI went left and passed by the subdued troll. His sapphire stopped hissing. Left, right, or forward?

The dementor made her feel anxious and full of doubt. Was there a way for her to win, was there really a point in this competition? Her mood dropping, she shuffled back and away from the dementor. The proverbial black cloud above her head dissipated, her motivation returning.
Noticing the sapphire was quiet now, she decided to try wetting it again. Hopefully, regular water would work, not just the puddle water. "Aguamenti." Then she kept moving.

Ares went left past the troll. Clearly another Champion had been this way, so he must be going in the right direction. That, or he would find them also going in the wrong direction. But he had to keep his hopes up that he would find the stairs eventually. He decided to go left.

Only the key managed to fall into the puddle. Desiree watched with rapt attention and… nothing happened. Hm. So that was not useful. Perhaps she needed to use one of the other two objects? Next she tried the flag again, hoping she would have better luck.

Ares found another dead end. He went back and thought about which way to go. He didn't want to go back so he decided to go forward. Hopefully this would be the way to some stairs. He wondered if he might just be walking around in circles, always missing the stairs, but there was no way to tell anyway.

Another dud. “Merde,” Desiree swore, feeling like she was just wasting time. Was she wrong? Was the puddle just a distraction? There was only one item left, so she dropped the sapphire into the puddle, hoping at least one of the three objects would do something.

SILVIA ODETTE STIRLING went right and instantly had to decide on her direction again. Left or right?
ARES CRIVELLI went forward and found a subdued acromantula. The path took him automatically to the left and he walked for a bit. Forward was stairs downward. Left or forward?
DESIREE FONTAINE dropped the sapphire in the puddle and picked it back up. It started to hiss. She wondered what that meant. Since she was done with the puddle, she went back to where she was. Forward was the stairs downward. Left or forward?
CALVIN KLEIN went left and then automatically left again. He reached a dead end and found an acromantula. It seemed to avoid him, though, scared of the hissing noise coming from the sapphire. He was free to go back. Left, right, or forward?

Oh, no, another split in her path. The thought that she was making all the wrong choices got worse every time she had to make a new one. Biting her lip, she walked on.

Spiders! Why the spiders! Calvin hates spiders, thank goodness it seemed to be scared of the gem that was hissing. He decided to go forward harrowingly dodging the spider.

At first nothing seemed to happen upon dropping the sapphire into the water, and she picked up all three objects to put back in her pocket, feeling utterly defeated. But just then she heard a hissing noise coming from the gem. Desiree stared at it intently. What did this mean? She looked around, but nothing else changed around her. She sighed dejectedly. Great, another object just as useful as that damned necklace from the first task.
All her ideas now exhausted, she headed back towards the stairs before turning left, heading down the other path. Hopefully she hadn’t wasted too much time at that puddle and she wasn’t falling behind her competitors.

Yes, stairs! No, wait... They went down. Ares cursed, fed up with this maze. How did he get back to the entrance again? Well, it sure didn't look like his entrance, though. It was either the left or right one, but he had no idea which one. He decided to go left because of course he didn't want to leave the maze. That would not help him win.
