"It's what I will call you if you continue to refer to me as 'Mulcher," he responded, still concentrating on the potion ingredients at hand. The nettle was exactly the right weight, so he removed it from the scale, added a wide beaker and began to measure out the coconut oil.
"I picked Ravenclaw cos like, they're smart aren't they?" Julian had hesitated in his pour, and his eyes darted back to the new transfer student, "arguable," but he heard the slight tinge of humour in Calvin's tone, and kept his own tone light. He was quite aware, from their previous meeting, that the boy now paired with him for this class was not, in fact, an idiot. Klein had proven himself to be rather perceptive - and what's more was that he was clearly a blood purist. Julian respected that. He had believed that the boy would have been better placed in Slytherin - but clearly the Sorting Hat had another perspective. It was a shame, really. Calvin would have been a welcome addition to the Slytherin common room.
As Klein mentioned his previous school, Julian nodded, pouring the 5 ounces of coconut oil into the cauldron and lighting the fire underneath. The oil would boil quickly against the open flame. He felt Klein lean into him, and Julian instinctively pulled away, inching his body from the Ravenclaw. Careful, he thought inwardly, anxiety rising. There were only a select amount of people that Julian trusted enough to be close to him - and even then he was not the person to offer a handshake, a consoling hug or even a pat on the back. Touching other people was almost a foreign concept to him - his family was not affectionate in the slightest sense, and Julian had carried that with him as he grew.
He managed to quell his heartbeat, however, knowing that Calvin meant no harm and his threat was not sincere. Julian masked his movement as though he were simply reaching for the aloe plant that sat on the edge of the desk, swiftly pushing it towards the Ravenclaw, clearing his throat. "We require 15 drops by the time the nettle is steeped," he directed softly. Julian hardly worked in pairs and wasn't quite sure how to act - most times that he was forced into a partnership in classes he worked in silence alongside a terrified Hufflepuff or a equally stubborn Gryffindor, or he had Hilfiger and the two worked with efficiency. This was the first time he was attempting to work cooperatively with someone fairly new. Being nice was not his strong suit, but somehow he figured Klein had already accepted his personality, nice or not, for why else would the Ravenclaw approach him in Potions?
He caught the smile Klein offered in response to his notes, feeling odd at the sight - a feeling he couldn't quite place. "Coconut oil is ready, I'm adding the nettle now." Julian scraped the dried nettle into the boiling mixture. They had 30 minutes to prep the remaining ingredients from this point in time. He turned the hourglass before them so that they could keep track.

Potions was one of Ilona’s favourite classes, or at the very least one she considered most important for her education, and therefore she always put extra effort into its school work. She raised her hand to answer the professor’s questions, proud to share her knowledge in the subject matter. “It can heal up to third degree burns, professor, so it can heal most burns other than those caused by Fiendfyre, as Maeve mentioned,” she answered after her fellow Slytherin. While she was still a bit wary around Maeve, she flashed her a brief smile. After the events of this summer, befriending a possible friend of her childhood bullies seemed like the least of her worries.
Once it came time to pick a partner, however, Ilona found herself alone. Most people paired up quickly, leaving Ilona with few choices. Tynan was a possible option, somebody she knew briefly from her own house, although he seemed in a bit of a mood on that day. She couldn’t quite blame him with the full moon being so close, but that didn’t mean she wanted to work with him. Looking around the room, her eyes stopped on the most obvious choice. Of course! Her own flesh and blood.
Traipsing over to his table, she plopped herself down on the chair next to Henri. “Mind working with your sister on this one?” She didn’t even give him time to answer before she began taking out her own supplies and laying them on the table next to his. “So, how much have you done so far?” As she asked the question she began looking at his setup, examining his progress and comparing it with the instructions on the board. It seemed he was already a few steps in. “Have you already added the nettle?”

"Someone's a sensitive boy." He replied teasing the young Julian as he stuck his tounge out at him. Calvin found it enjoyable taking the micky out of him purely based off the fact that he knew he would get such a unique outburst of words from the young man who spoke quite intelligently. " Well Mulcher, what exactly does the word mean?" He asked hoping for an explanation.
Calvin was one of the rare few students who were allowed to pick their house at Hogwarts. While the conventional way of being sorted into the four houses by the sorting hat was originally used, the sorting hat spent 6 hours trying to figure out which house he was better suited too. The sorting hat in all due respect was stuck between Ravenclaw and Slytherin and whilst he contemplated the thought of being in the green, he much actually found a liking toward Ravenclaw house purely based off the reason their emblem was a bird rather than a snake.
" We require 15 drops. " He mimicked in a sarcastic and playful way as he followed the instructions given to him by Julian. Calvin's personality was best described as a Labrador. Easily distracted, playful but also quite protective and loyal. " There done. " He replied slowly adding in the drops ensuring it was done correctly in the right pace too. " Do you want me to do the next step? " He asked almost dancing about while waiting only to scream something out of the blue. "RAT!" He said as he pointed his finger in the direction the large rat stood terrified as Calvin watched from a distance looking like a dog seeing a squirl from the distance.
Henri was so accustom to working alone that whenever he was placed in a position of working with someone else he would go all awkward and frantic more than anything. Seeing Ilona approach him made him feel a sense of relief considering he was more comfortable being around someone he knew well that was family.
Smiling, he welcomed Ilona to his little cauldron. " Actually, maybe you can help me. " He said as he had already completed a few steps. " I'm just waiting for the 30 minutes to pass if you want to do the next part? " He had his timer set for 30 minutes and 20 of those 30 had already passed. " So in a couple of minutes you can do the aloe plants? "

Jarod sat in class as he watched everyone as he listened to the professor, and as they were paired to work on a position, he just looked down not sure what to think of that. He then looked up and around himself, he then sighed as most paired up but he had no one to be pair with. Jarod decided to work on it alone as he gathered the ingridients and just began to work. It wasn't easy but he planned to do that anyway. He figured that he might as well work alone or not at all as it seemed to him that all were already paired up anyway, at least as far as he could tell. Jarod figured that if he managed to do what was instructed on his own then it should be just as good as working with someone else, even if he worked alone. At least Jarod hoped so, amyway.

He was aware that Calvin was teasing him, and perhaps outside of the classroom Julian would have toed the line somewhere between aggravated and spirited response but he was stuck there in front of a Professor so responding with another insult just was not a wise move, lest it be understood as bullying. Besides, the Ravenclaw had demonstrated his personality to Julian early on -- he was cheeky and headstrong - any certainly had a mouth on him. Julian could recall their first meeting in Diagon Alley and how the future Ravenclaw had not backed down. After a few words, however, it was as though they had never bickered, and both had fallen into a mutual truce. Thus Julian knew Klein would handle a quip back quite well, but there was a time and place. "It means nothing... it represents a severe lack of respect for your family name - as you have demonstrated for mine."Klarck had simply been a play on Klein, much like Calvin had referred to Julian as Mulcher rather than Mulciber.
As Julian worked, steam began to rise from their shared cauldron, the coconut oil and nettle boiling away. Julian eyed the mixture, noting the dried nettle had begun to rehydrate, giving the oil a slightly green tinge. His eyes darted to the hourglass on their desk, about halfway done. He heard Calvin mimicking him as he worked on the aloe. Julian breathed out quietly, wondering what he had done in life to end up here.
There, done. Julian's eyes snapped back to their cauldron from the hourglass, watching as Klein added the last drop of aloe... 15 minutes early. A hiss escaped his lips and Julian tutted, "Ah, no -- tu fais l’andouille," he leaned forward in his seat to see better into their cauldron - watching the mixture swirl against the bubbling oil. Would it ruin their potion too much if the timing was off?
A sudden exclamation from Calvin caused Julian to flinch, slamming his cranium into the top of the cauldron stand. He winced, falling back into his chair while white hot pain shot through his head and down his spine. Merlin, dammit. Julian raised a hand to rub his head angrily, feeling an immediate headache coming on.

Leo nodded, "Yep! Got to spend some more time with my dads, and some of my extended family. I live in Hogsmeade, so it's a little bit weird to know that the castle is right there." He did like visiting, but some of the names could be a bit much to remember, especially when everyone was talking at once. He hadn't always been a Rutherford, but since he'd been adopted, he'd gotten used to it. Which was entirely naturally, since it had been quite a few years.
He appreciated that Levi had prepared the aloe plant. "Thanks for doing that. This one's pretty easy, luckily." If it had involved a lot of chopping, it might've been boring. "How were your holidays?"

Annabelle sat in class as got inside same time others did. She listened to the professor. Annabelle then sighed as she had no idea whom to work with, as she sighed and shrugged her shoulders. She decided to work on it on her own as she found no one to work with. Annabelle didn't trust many people in class, so she decided to work on the position on her own, to prove that she could do it and to be able to pass her owls this year in order to finally be a sixth year and not to stay in fifth for much longer than she needed to, as she already did. She tried not to think of it as she began to work on her potion. Annabelle was scared to mass up so that her parents won't find out and punish her for it. Annabelle tried not to think of that as she focused on what she needed to do and nothing else. She waited to add the ingrients that were needed to be added in the right time. Annabelle believed in herself as she worked on her potion. From time to time she looked at the others and sighed. Annabelle eventually added all the ingrients in. She did that when it was the right time not before that as was needed. Annabelle froze as the next thing had happened. "What the hell?" Annabelle exclaimed shocked. She jumped and run over as she went to cgeck on Julian, and then she tried to help him up as she glared at Calvin. "Are you alright? I think you need to go to the hospital wing. I could take you there if you need help getting there," she said to Julian.

Potions had always been one of his best classes due to how similar it was to his passion: cooking. Through the years Lewis changed a lot. During his first year he discovered the Professor could read minds and later he always tried to think of silly things like alpacas to mess with him. Now he wasn’t feeling like any of that. This wasn't even the same professor. The usually loud and giggly Hufflepuff sat quietly in the back.
He noticed the Rowle siblings had already paired up so Lewis was hoping to work either alone or if Love or Lisa might join. He decided to start for now, this wasn’t a subject he needed help with anyways. So boiling coconut oil was the way to start. He wondered if the paste would eventually taste like curry.

“ So you saying you was teasing me back then? “ He said as he winked an eye flirtatiously toward him. “ You coulda just said you like to tease people. But hey, I do enjoy playing hard to get. “ He joked around obviously quite a bit. Calvin knew exactly what Julian had meant but it was always so interesting to see someone speak in such a polished way that it was almost fun to hear them say things in general.
The sudden distraction of a rat caused Calvin to create sudden movements. Despite following the recipe so he believed to the most impeccable standard, he somehow much of missed a step or two in the process. Hearing Julian’s outburst made him wonder what exactly was happening. He paused as he took a look back at him and wondered if Julian was afraid of rats or if there was something else ailing the young boy. He could only assume it had something to do with the paste or potion thing they were preparing.
” Why’d you hit your head for? I can’t be that hard to work with. “

It was super interesting that they were to make paste. They would start off by boiling coconut oil and not water, they would store their completed product in tins and not flasks, they would apply it topically and not drink it like a potion. Nicha liked to take care of all kinds of magical creatures, including fire-shooting ones. She decided to pay special attention this class - who knew? She could get to work with dragons one day and make burn-healing paste for her team on a regular basis.
Making her way to the back of the classroom and missing the rat crisis, the fifth year noticed that her older housemate Lewis had started on the paste on his own. Nicha wondered if he already had a workmate whom he was waiting for, or if he was in a bad mood, as he seemed more subdued than usual. Still, she thought that it wouldn’t hurt to ask. “Hi, Lewis! Do you mind if I work with you?” she smiled but not too brightly, again, in case he was in a bad mood.

As was often the case, Slytherins provided answers to all of the questions. Intelligence and academic aptitude were not traits reserved for Ravenclaws only, after all. If anything, Slytherin ambition allowed their mental faculties to stand out more than mere curiosity and desire to learn could. Looking up at the mention of her name, Maeve noted Ilona smiling at her; that was new. The redhead wasted no time in mirroring the friendly expression.
She had thought the other girl had no interest in befriending her. That was disappointing - a Rowle's loyalty could prove useful in the future, even if it didn't seem so now. Despite coming from a well-known family, Ilona lacked the influence her pureblood peers had. That, by itself, would not have deterred Maeve; after all, who knew - perhaps Ilona planned to claim her family's legacy in the future. But it was also becoming evident that Ilona did not share purist views. She spent unseemly amounts of time with half-bloods and had yet to closely connect with even one noteworthy pure-blooded classmate. Had she changed her views over the summer, decided to make herself more approachable?
It was almost disappointing that she could not join the brunette for today's assignment and see if conversation would flow any easier this time around. Nonetheless, as she set to working on the potion, the peace and fluidity of performing all the tasks on her own proved enjoyable. Maeve added the required amount of coconut oil into her cauldron and set a medium flame under it. Once the liquid was bubbling with heat, she reduced the flame and added the nettles. The thirty-minute waiting time allowed her to pull out a book and catch up on her extracurricular reading... until some of her classmates caused a ruckus.
The new transfer student had paired up with Julian and the two were currently attracting quite a bit of attention. Maeve looked up from her book, intrigued to see the strange rapport - or lack thereof - between the two. She had not yet gotten to know the seventeen-year-old fifth-year, although he did pique her interest. He had participated in Dodecawizard along with Stirling, and almost won - although the half-breed emerged victorious in the end. And he was a pureblood - albeit she couldn't tell if his views and upbringing could make him a potential ally. She would have to ask Julian and see if there were enough respectable characterustics to deem Klein a worthy addition to their exclusive group. So far, it seemed like the very idea would offend Julian.

Although he had shared a few classes with Leo, he had never actually taken the time to actually hold a conversation with him and learning about him was actually quite interesting. "Wow, so your break consisted of seeing the castle almost on a daily basis then?" He wondered what it would of been like to be reminded of the same magical school that almost felt like a holiday away from home. " Hmm my holidays were interesting. " Whilst he couldn't really say that his father had been mentoring him in dark arts, it certainly was an interesting break to think about. " Just stayed with family and did family things I guess. You wanna do the next stage of the paste?" He asked considering he didn't feel too comfortable talking about his school break.

Her nettles had already been steeping for twenty-seven minutes. Maeve used the remaining time to squeeze aloe juice into a separate glass jar, carefully removing any bits of the translucent pulp that got mixed in. After the last seconds of the thirty minutes ticked down, she distributed fifteen drops of aloe goo over the potion and raised the heat.
Soon enough, the liquid mass was boiling again. The redhead minimized the heat and added first the honey, then the beeswax. She made sure the mixture had an even consistency before settling down to wait for another fifteen minutes.

Ilona was glad that Henri was okay working with her in that class. It was their first year sharing most classes, and she had been worried he would have preferred to work with friends. Luckily, her brother seemed to place the same emphasis on family as she did. She nodded at his request for her to work on the next part of the potion, beginning to prep the aloe juice. “Sure, I can handle the aloe. And perhaps you can measure the honey and beeswax for the following step?” She suggested, not wanting to do all of the work for him. While she enjoyed potions, and would gladly have done all the work, she did not want to take the learning opportunity away from her brother. After all, potions was an important subject matter, and could be very beneficial for him in the future.
Once the last ten minutes had elapsed, began adding the 15 drops of aloe juice, distributing them evenly throughout the potion surface, as instructed. She was counting in her head when she suddenly heard a loud commotion happening elsewhere in the class. Turning her head to look, she saw two boys obviously messing around at their own workstation, with a Slytherin girl tending to one as they appeared to be injured. Ilona rolled her eyes. Potions class was not the place for rough housing. Maybe a trip to the hospital wing was what those boys needed to learn such a lesson. Shifting her attention back to her own work, she swore a bit internally as she struggled to remember how many drops she had already added to the potion. Was it… 10? Or 11? If those boys hadn’t distracted her, she wouldn’t have lost count.
Hoping she was remembering correctly, she added in the last 5 drops turning up the heat once more to bring the potion to a boil. “How have you been feeling? Are you feeling okay with… well, with the weekend coming soon?” She tried to subtly ask him about the full moon without being too obvious, considering they were in a class full of their peers.
Full moons were different at Hogwarts than they were with the pack. With the pack, he was free to run and hunt with the rest of the adult wolves. At school, he was given wolfsbane and sent to the Transformation Center in Hogsmeade, where he would be locked in a room to wait out his transformations. Ilona was always much less worried about his transformations when they were at school, not that she would admit it out loud. She may not fully agree with the pack’s ideology, but they were still her family. Or, well, they had been, before the events of the summer.
