CULTURAL EXCHANGE AT HOGWARTS
In December, Hogwarts hosted an international cultural event during the last weekend before Christmas break. The purpose was to educate all of the students involved in the different wizarding cultures around the world.
Various schools from around the globe were invited to attend: Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, Xanadu, Salem, Augustine and Dahshur. The first four participated in the Dodecawizard Tournament with Hogwarts and Firenze in 1999. Due to the war with Italy, Firenze Academy was not invited to the cultural event.
All of the students from the other schools who wished to participate arrived at Hogwarts on Friday night. A large feast was held for introductions.
The following day, demonstrations were held in the Great Hall from all of the schools, showing each other their unique teachings. Xanadu hosted a particularily impressive Martial Arts demonstration and Salem showed everyone in the Quidditch Stadium just how Quodpod is played.
That night, a Ball was hosted, which spread throughout the castle. There were more witches and wizards at Hogwarts than there had been ever before, which made the Ball impossible to just be kept to the Great Hall.
A trip for everyone to Hogsmeade was arranged on the last day. Even the first and second year Hogwarts students were permitted to attend. The Hogwarts faculty gave them a nice surprise, having sent permission forms to their parents after school had already started, hoping to make it a wonderful surprise for them when the time came. They were successful and all of those who wished to attend went down to Hogsmeade village for the day.
The Headmaster of Hogwarts, Filius Flitwick, stated that this event was greatly educational for the students. "The Dodecawizard Tournament exposes the students to many others from different cultures, but this non-competition event left the students with much more knowledge about other cultures. It was very good for them."
Indeed, many of the students went home with some new pen pals and much more knowledge about other wizarding cultures. The older ones will hopefully be able to re-kindle those new friendships next year at Beauxbatons for the Dodecawizard Tournament. However, the participating schools (other than Beauxbatons, which is the host) is up in the air due to the war between Britain and Italy. Needless to say, Hogwarts and Firenze will not likely be attending together.
