character skills
This is to claim and put in your profile the skills that your character possesses so that others can know quickly what they are. This is NOT to try and make your character all powerful because they pass some arbitrary guidelines. Even if your character may qualify for it, if they aren't acting like it in character, they really shouldn't be claiming it. Students will only be at level 1 or 2 anyway - We will not be accepting students signing up for the time being. Since it's mostly pointless. All 1st - 5th years are level 1 and all 6th - 7th years are level 2. If you really want 4 of them in your profile, you can reply here asking for that, but we won't add them to the list. When they graduate, just post here to get them added to the list. (:
There are 10 levels.
If your character has been on the site for at least a term and you're trying to claim a non-school skill (ex. teaching, art, writing, etc.), it will only be accepted if you have actually roleplayed this. For example, if your character has never been a teacher, you can't claim anything above a level 1.
Anyone can claim level 1 in anything as a base. It simply means you're still learning it!
ALL SKILLS
Level 1 - Beginner - currently studying in school
Level 2 - Beginner - owl achieved (currently 6th or 7th year)
Level 3 - Decent - newt achieved: A or E
Level 4 - Decent - newt achieved: O
Level 5 - Proficient - have used it in their job for 3+ years
Level 6 - Very Proficient - have used it in their job for 5+ years
Level 7 - Very Talented - have used it in their job for 10+ years
Level 8 - Best in the Country - have used it in their job for 20+ years
Level 9 - Best in Europe - have used it in their job for 30+ years
Level 10 - Best in the World - one of the best in the world / have used it in their job for 50+
NON-SCHOOL SKILLS (ex. art)
Level 1 - Have studied it for under 5 years
Level 2 - Have studied it for 5+ years
Level 3 - Have studied it for 7+ years
Level 4 - Have studied it for 7+ years and are exceptional
(The rest of the levels are the same)
* "Have used it in their job" means on a daily basis and it should be the main thing their job is about. For example, Aurors have to do defensive and offensive magic all the time. It's their main thing. They also write reports. But that doesn't mean their writing skill should be as high as their defensive & offensive magic skills. So if it's something they do only once a week, it would really only be 2 years of experience rather than 10.
WANDLESS & NON-VERBAL
Wandless and Non-Verbal must be lower than your average spell skill (Ex. Charms 6, Defensive Magic 5, Offensive Magic 7, Transfiguration 3 = average skill of 5, so Wandless and Non-Verbal must be 4 or lower).
OCCLUMENCY & LEGILIMENCY
You may claim a base of Level 3. For every 5 years you've had and used the skill, you may claim another level. If you want above Level 5, you will need to prove that your character regularly uses this skill in roleplay. Anyone who is in training will be at a skill of 1.
GIFTED/PRODIGY CHARACTERS
If your character is gifted or a prodigy (you need to claim this in the Abilities/Species list first), they can claim 2 levels higher than normal.
CUSTOM SKILLS
Each character can create one (1) custom skill upon admin approval.
-- It must be an actual skill. Not something general that anyone can do. Not a personality trait. It must be something you can DO. Ex. "History" is not a skill. But writing is.
-- It must be something that you do for a job/career, otherwise it's kind of pointless. If your character has a hobby (ex. knitting) and it's very important to them, we may accept it, but keep in mind that you do only get 1 custom skill.
BE REALISTIC
The numbers are general guidelines for maximums aka you can't claim it if you don't have that at the least. But that doesn't mean that everyone who has 'used it in their job for 20+ years' is the best in the country. Far from it! So be realistic to how your character actually is. You don't want to put that they're the 'best in the country' at something on your profile and then someone try to plot with you about that and find out that your character only mildly knows how to do it.
LEVEL 8+
If you are claiming Level 8+, you must put an explanation of why your character should have that level. Keep in mind that it is not guaranteed, even if you've used it at your job for a certain number of years.
Please note that it will be harder for new characters to get Level 8+ because they haven't had the experience on the site to show off their skills in character.
There are many skills.
