It was a Saturday afternoon, and Lia was slumped in one of the most comfortable armchairs in the common room (in her opinion at least), her class books stacked on the armrests and at her feet. She had her charms textbook open, reading the chapter on Levitation Charms as per Professor Channing’s request. Or attempting to read, as her mind drifted off.
First week of classes was over and Lia was already feeling overwhelmed by it all. Hogwarts was so unlike her previous school. To start, the campus was absolutely gigantic, she couldn’t believe how much space there was. The castle was just an absolute maze. She’d already gotten lost countless times thanks to moving staircases and trick doorways. And her classes… well, they weren’t going quite as well as she had hoped.
She had never been the most academically inclined student, but she thought it’d be different here. She was studying magic! It was in her blood, right? Or at least that’s how she understood magic to work. Then how come it wasn’t coming easily to her? Other students seemed to be grasping their classwork like it was nothing. Lia on the other hand could barely get a spark to come out of her wand, much less successfully cast a spell.
She heaved a deep sigh as she re-read the same sentence a tenth time before giving up, snapping her book shut and letting her head fall back in exasperation. Maybe they were wrong about her. Maybe she wasn’t actually a witch, and they’d gotten her confused with someone else. There was probably another Amelia Fletcher somewhere in England who should be here instead.
Worst of all, she was still alone. And more lonely than before as here she didn’t even have her mother for company. She’d been at Hogwarts a week already and had yet to really make any meaningful connections. This school was starting to look as bleak as her last one.

It was a Saturday which meant... no classes! Magic was surely exciting, Dorian had to admit. It definitely made him want to go to class more than in muggle school. But they were still classes with homework and projects and papers, eugh! He was definitely happy to have the weekend away from classes.
Dorian slept in until 10 and missed breakfast but he went down exuberantly for lunch and took all he could. He was a growing boy so he needed lots of food! But now he was spent and there was no way he was going to work on homework. He decided to go back to the common room.
He entered the cozy Hufflepuff common room and instantly headed to one of the sofas and slumped down in the middle. He let his arms rest along the whole back of the sofa, taking up all the space, and tilted his head back as he let out a sigh. He could do with some relaxation after such a big meal!
It took him a moment but finally he turned his head to one side and saw someone tucked into an armchair near him. "Hey," he said simply. But then he made his head be upright again as he looked at her and adjusted himself so he wasn't slouching, but his arms were still on the back of the sofa. "You're not doing homework on a Saturday, are you?" He wasn't being rude, but he hoped that she would say no because that would be a ridiculous thing to do on their day off.

Lia was so lost in thought, just staring at the common room ceiling, that she didn’t even notice another student sitting on a sofa near her. It was only when he spoke that she actually looked away from the multitude of plants hanging above her, and looked over to see her classmate sitting nearby. “Oh, hey Dorian,” she responded, trying and struggling to pull her lips into a friendly smile. She didn’t mean to be rude, and it’s not that she wasn’t happy to see a fellow first year, but she was finding it hard to pull herself out from under this dark cloud.
He seemed shocked that she would be doing homework on a weekend, making Lia feel a bit self-conscious about her choice of Saturday plans. “Um… yeah, kinda… I’m… um…” She struggled to explain herself without having to admit the true reason for her studying, but decided maybe the truth wouldn’t be so bad. Maybe he would relate? “I kind of, um, struggled with- with spellcasting in classes this week,” she started, shifting her eyes downwards and nervously tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. “So I just thought that maybe if I, uh, if I studied a bit I’d be more prepared for classes next week.” She finally dared look back up to Dorian, hoping she wouldn’t see judgment in his eyes. “It probably won’t change much, but I thought it was worth a try,” she quickly backtracked in case he thought her weird, or ridiculous for thinking her solution may be found in a textbook.

Lia sure seemed embarrassed about her situation but she didn't need to be. Not at all! "Well hey, don't worry. We're just first years. It'll get better."
Dorian got up and took a seat next to her. He was a little close and closed her book for her. "Besides, I don't think reading more about spells will make them any better. You gotta do spells!" Then he stood up and offered his hand to her. "Come on, let's go." His tone implied it wasn't a question. He wasn't going to take no for an answer.
While Dorian didn't really want to be practicing schoolwork right now, maybe they could have some fun with it. It sure was better than letting his friend sit there in the common room studying her books all day on a Saturday! He hoped she would go along with it. Otherwise, he would probably seem like a bit of a jerk. He didn't want to be like that to Lia, or anyone for that matter.

Lia smiled at Dorian’s kind words. She appreciated the sentiment, although she couldn’t shake the nagging doubt in the back of her mind that she was the problem. She nervously tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and looked back down to her book for a moment, when she felt the seat shift beneath her. She looked over to see Dorian right next to her, and her eyes widened in surprise. She didn’t say a word as he closed her book, informing her that reading about spells probably wouldn’t get the results she desired. Her cheeks flushed - was it from the comment or from his proximity? Lia wasn’t sure.
Before she could fully process it, Dorian stood up and offered his hand, asking her to join him… somewhere. Where? Lia had no idea, but she was definitely intrigued. She wasn’t one to pass up on an adventure. With a shy smile she placed her book down on the stack at her feet, and accepted his outstretched hand as she stood up out of the chair. “Alright, where to?”

Dorian was pretty oblivious to Lia blushing. He was more focused on getting her out of the common room on such a nice day. He grinned when she took his hand and he helped her up out of the chair.
"You'll see!" he exclaimed as he led her to the entrance of the common room. They exited and then he finally let go of her hand. They didn't really need to hold hands the whole time, but they probably did linger a little too long holding hands from the chairs to the entrance.
Thankfully, being in the basement, it wasn't that far to get to the Entrance Hall. No one really bothered them either, which was also good.
Dorian opened the front doors and let Lia go first before following behind her and then walking beside her. It was quite the nice day and many students were outside, though it wasn't crowded. Mostly because of the fact that the grounds were so vast. There could be a lot of people outside and they would never have to bother anyone else who didn't want to be bothered.
Dorian led the way and they walked towards the lake. "Here, ummm..." He jogged a bit ahead of her. He didn't quite have all this planned out but he went towards the water. Then he turned back towards her when he was only a couple of steps from the water's edge. "We can practice the water-repelling charm!" He bent down and put his hand in and then flicked a bit of water at Lia. Not enough to really make her wet, but they could have more of a water fight after, once they did the spell!

Lia laughed as Dorian pulled her out of the common room and through the hallways until they ended up in the Entrance Hall. She wasn’t quite sure why she was letting him bring her to an unknown destination, she didn’t even really know him. Yet, there was some odd feeling of trust that had her following without question.
Walking out the doors ahead of him, she closed her eyes for a moment and tilted her head up towards the sun. It was a gorgeous day. Much too nice of a day to be cooped up in the common room. Dorian was right, it seemed. She followed him down towards the lake, wondering what he had planned, eyebrows raising as he jogged closer to the edge of the water. She laughed as he playfully sprayed her with water, raising her arms to protect herself from the minuscule droplets.
“Alright,” she acquiesced with a slight nervous tremor in her voice. “I’ll give it a try.” She looked around and picked up a small rock next to the water’s edge. She didn’t want to risk trying the spell on Dorian and something going wrong. Taking out her wand, she pointed it at the rock and took a deep breath. “Impervius.” A light jutted out of her wand and enveloped the rock, but when it disappeared the rock looked no different.
Lia sighed and her shoulders slumped. “See? I’m no good at spells.” She shucked the rock into the lake in frustration, only the rock didn’t dip into the water as she expected. It bounced. Lia watched in amazement as the rock bounced across the lake a few more times, her lips spreading into a wide smile. She began jumping up and down in excitement. “Did you see that? Did you see it? It worked! The spell worked!”
TAGGED: DORIAN HUDSON Notes: not sure if the spell would actually work like that but thought it would be fun lol

Dorian was glad that Lia trusted him enough to go along with his plan of taking her to the lake. It was quite the walk, not like pulling someone to the opposite end of the common room to play chess or something.
He watched as she attempted the spell on a rock. He expected her to use her robes or something, but a rock seemed fine too, he supposed.
"Don't you have to test it out--" he began, but then Lia threw the rock into the lake, testing out the spell. It seemed to work because it refused to get wet! "Way to go!" he exclaimed, jumped up and down and hugging her at the same time. Then he let go and took out his wand.
"I should try too I guess?" Dorian wasn't sure he would be any good at it, though. "You might have to help me." He laughed.
Dorian grabbed a rock too and put it on the ground. Clearing his throat, he said the spell, pointing his wand directly at the rock. "Impervius!" He tried to sound confident. It looked like something happened, at least there was magic that shot from his wand to the rock. But there was only one way to too. He didn't want to throw the rock away, though, so he picked it up and dipped it into the lake. He stepped towards Lia to show her. It was wet.
Dorian frowned. "I'm no good at this, I guess. But this was your practice, not mine. What else do you want to try? We could..." Dorian pondered for a moment. "Levitate the rock into the tree branches above?" There was a grand tree nearby that had some rather thick branches above, so they would be able to balance the rock up there. If anyone found it, they might wonder how a rock got there at all.

There was something about Dorian that made Lia feel comfortable. Confident. He had a way of making her feel like she could do anything. So when he celebrated her success with her, jumping up and down in an embrace, Lia finally felt like she may be okay at this new school. Unfortunately Dorian wasn’t as successful as she was with the spell, causing her to frown a little. She decided since he was helping her, she would do the same for him. “You can try again?” She offered. “This doesn’t have to be just my practice. We could both practice together!”
She grabbed a large branch off the ground and quickly ran a few feet back from the lake. Using the branch, she carved out three circles in the dirt, forming a makeshift bullseye with three sections. She then made her way back to Dorian. “If you want to practice levitation, how about we make a game of it? We can take turns levitating a rock and seeing how close we can get to the center.” She looked at Dorian with a bright smile, hoping he’d enjoy her idea. “Let’s say the outside ring is 10 points, the middle one is 20, and the center is 30?” She ended her explanation with a questioning tone, as if asking him if this was okay. So far he’d been the one more leading their little training adventure, so Lia wanted to make sure he was okay with her idea. “You can start,” she offered, waving her hand towards the field of play.
