Hogsmeade was not a place Thalia got to visit frequently. Shopping in Diagon Alley made much more sense for a family living in London. But today her mother was meeting some friend here, and had nobody available for babysitting. Charlotte was to be taken along to the meeting, not big enough to be allowed to wander. Thalia barely got the permission to do so herself, after having promised to stay within a hundred yards of The Three Broomsticks. She was even given a few Galleons to spend.
Her initial idea was to visit Honeydukes but a nearby shop caught her eye. Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, the famous joke shop founded by that family which seemed to have members everywhere. She slipped through the door and entered pure chaos. There were some odd apparati making whirring noises, miniature models of dragons roasting nuts, a cauldron of some colourful potion steaming and sparkling, and small fireworks whizzing in the air. One flew right past, nearly catching in her hair. Another one hit her in the shoulder and exploded into a shower of harmless sparks.
"Ugh, this place is silly," Thalia complained to nobody in particular, flustered about this collision that she thought made her look like the victim of some prank. "Who could possibly like all this childish stuff?" she mumbled, the epitome of maturity at the advanced age of ten.

Ezra had been milling about the Wheezes store, mainly because it was a common place he found himself for various reasons, and had been largely keeping to himself in a corner. The shop had long since lost its interest for the boy, who had been subjected to endless pranks and jokes throughout his short lifetime, and at this point he had had enough. It also didn't help that Ezra's birthday had been on the biggest joke of them all - April 1st.
That had been 'hilarious'.
Uncle Fred and George, even his dad, Ron, had run with that one for many years. Many, many years.
Nearby, a girl around Ezra's age seemed to share similar sentiments to the Weasley child. Ezra didn't know her, not exactly, but believed he had seen her around - the long red hair was unmissable, much like the horde of Weasleys who also boasted similar tones. One of the fireworks whizzed toward her and exploded about the upper body, to which Ezra wandered over and swatted at the sparkling bits, shooing them away to dissipate from the air.
"Yeah, and it only gets sillier the further in you go," Ezra said with a deadpan glance over his shoulder. "You'd be surprised who likes this stuff. Lots of kids, teenagers and even adults... it's kinda annoying. The adults, I mean, mostly."
Ezra put his hands into his pant pockets and looked toward the interior of the store with some degree of contempt.

Thalia hadn't noticed the boy approach. His voice startled her, and she could feel the temperature rise in her cheeks as she realized he heard her complaints. But at least he seemed to be agreeing, and even making sure all the firework sparks disappeared from her vicinity. She relaxed a little, her head bobbing in agreement to his words. Of course, there would be a lot of silly kids and teenagers who liked this type of stuff, and even some weird immature adults. Thankfully, her own parents showed no interest in all this 'fun' - or they might have raised a future Gryffindor. Ew.
"I'm Thalia. Pleasure to meet you." Her hazel eyes followed the boy's gaze, also exploring the inside of the store. She ducked to dodge another loose firework, which hit a wall and produced another burst of sparks nearby. "Weasley shop..." Her voice was only mildly derisive. "I wonder what it's like in their households. Half of their family occupies the major positions in both governments, the other half does, well, this. I bet it's mostly chaos, with the more serious adults being absent." Grasping for power, as the Daily Prophet had put it.

Ezra offered a smile as the girl introduced herself. Thalia. It was a nice name, he supposed, but got distracted by more fireworks nearby to think more on it. Besides, she spoke and introduced herself, to which Ezra continued to give a half-smile - it was hard to be in good spirits in the shop, at least for him.
"Yeah, same, nice to meet you," the boy said with a nod, as he dug his hands deeper into his pockets. "And yeah... this place has been around for ages. Kinda surprising, really."
It seemed the silliness of the wizarding world had enough interest to keep the place serving.
"Well... chaotic would probably describe it, if you asked me," Ezra said in a deadpan voice, as he glanced to Thalia. "Like, being surrounded by this stuff? Chaos, for sure."
When Thalia mentioned the major positions in governments, Ezra quirked an eyebrow and looked at her.
"What do you mean? About the government stuff, I mean. Are they really that important in the wizarding world?"
In truth, Ezra had always kind of glazed over when his family talked about that kind of stuff; but, when another kid around his age mentioned it, he supposed it might be worth paying more attention to. Or maybe not. He didn't know, really.
"So what brings you to this place, of all places?"

She wasn't surprised when the boy appeared to be oblivious to the political influence of the Weasley family. Most kids in her age group didn't care about all that. Truth be told, Thalia wasn't exactly interested in it herself. It's just that her mother and some of the pureblood family friends were discussing it quite often, and the ten-year-old simply picked some of it up to parrot in a suitable occasion. Such as this one.
"Yes, yes they are. Percival Weasley is the Minister of Magic in Britain, and Hermione Granger-Weasley is the Prime Witch in Scotland. Well, she's only a Weasley by marriage but still. And her husband is the Head Auror in Scotland, so that's another major position. It's not unknown for a Head Auror to later become the Minister of Magic, so yeah, they seem to be making the leading of both countriesit a family business." Most of that was a nearly-direct quote from an article she read in the Weekly Prophet a few weeks ago.
The redhead's eyes were studying the shelves at the far end of the shop as she spoke. Despite the contempt she expressed upon entering the place, she was still quite curious about the wares that were being sold here - if only to accumulate more material for criticism... "I didn't have much to do so I decided to come and see why this place was so popular. What about you, why are you here?"

Ezra felt kind of stupid for a moment, really. He remained silent as Thalia explained what his parents essentially did, or rather what positions in the Government they held, and the boy wondered if maybe he should have paid more attention to that stuff. But, in Ezra's defense, all that stuff was pretty boring and he didn't really care to ask about what his family did in their - boring, for him - day-to-day jobs...
"I guess so, when you say it like that," Ezra mumbled, a frown on his face for a moment. "Is that a bad thing? They're both pretty nice and fair. Mostly. I've heard of way worse witches and wizards who only care about themselves or their families... so, it would suck for them to be in charge, right?"
Ezra didn't mention those instances where he was grounded or had stern talking's-to from his dad...
"Oh, I don't come here by choice," Ezra said with a shrug as he followed along with Thalia. She was kind of cool, he supposed, she seemed pretty smart and wasn't a fan of jokes, either. "My uncle is around here somewhere, he's just looking after me for a bit. So, I'm here because he's here. Actually, I'm waiting for my dad to pick me up later... and it's kind of boring, really, walking around the shop for so long."
He looked back to Thalia.
"So are you out with your family, shopping and stuff? I heard there was a sale coming up for magic books. I'll probably grab some early for Hogwarts and all."

Thalia shrugged. "I mean, I never met any members of that family and most politicians manage to appear nice for interviews, so I don't know. But I suppose there have been worse people in those same positions." She was truly out of her depth here. Reciting something she had seen written about the Weasleys in a news article was simple enough, but comparing them to other people who had worked at the Ministry in earlier years? Nope, better steer the conversation away from it.
She was quite interested in Ezra's response. It sounded like he had to come here often because his older family members were doing some sort of business with the Weasleys. "Oh, that sucks. I wouldn't want to spend time here regularly. Actually, a single visit once in every hundred years is about how regular I want it." The girl smiled, hoping this would cheer Ezra up.
"My mom's meeting a friend at The Three Broomsticks, and she allowed me to explore the village. Provided I don't get into trouble and don't do anything dangerous." She eyed a firework, its trajectory passing threateningly close to her head. "Doing a fine job so far."

Ezra nodded, as Thalia mentioned not knowing any of the family personally. That made sense, they had just met, but the boy obviously had knowledge she didn't about all that. He was about to speak up and mention they were his family, but a whistling firework zipped by and caused Ezra to duck. He grimaced, irritated, as he watched the thing explode in a little spark nearby. And by that time, Thalia had made a comment about the shop, which caused Ezra to laugh.
"Most of the time I just sit out front," Ezra said with a shrug, though he kept smiling. "But once every hundred years sounds about right. Yeah, I'd be okay with that."
Still, the likelihood of that happening was beyond zero. The joke shop was part of Ezra's life, there was no escaping that fact, though maybe he could try to spend less time, generally. Ezra was lost in that thought process when Thalia answered about her family, which caused him to look back at her and nod. Being able to explore the village was nice, there was a lot of fun to be had, though sadly Ezra couldn't join with exploration...
"Oh, cool," Ezra said. "I don't think this shop counts, really. Nothing's like really dangerous, so you're fine--"
Ezra opened his mouth to continue, but from the front entry a familiar face appeared.
"--ahh, and there's my dad. Sorry, I have to go."
With a wry expression, Ezra walked past Thalia and headed to his parent. Not far away, Ron Weasley offered an awkward wave, like a typical dad. Luckily, Ezra supposed, his dad hadn't walked over to introduce himself and see what was going on. That would have been super embarrassing, especially to have Thalia put up with his dad's silliness or jokes or whatever else he decided to say to ruin Ezra's conversation.
"Bye, Thalia," Ezra called as he shoved his dad a bit, encouraging Ron to leave quickly. "Have fun exploring the village."
Ezra turned and all-but-pushed his dad out the door to the shop, so he didn't have to hear some dad joke about meeting a girl...

Thalia was finding she enjoyed Ezra's company. He was no-nonsense, which was preferable to the silliness most people in their age group exhibited. "Yeah, I guess mom wouldn't tell me off for coming here. Not because it's dangerous, at least." Pansy was more likely to criticize her visiting the shop due its its questionable reputation. Most respectable purebloods tended to avoid this place.
She was about to ask what it was his uncle did here when Ezra spotted his dad. The redhead turned, curious. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she immediately recognized the man. Too speechless to respond, she just stared - impolitely so, as her parents would have told her.
Did she really just criticize the Weasleys to a Weasley? And he even pretended to agree! She felt her cheeks beginning to burn. It was lucky nobody was paying her any attention. With a last glance at the commotion in the shop, she fled through the entrance and headed in the opposite direction from where Ezra and his father had gone.
