Harrison had found a classroom that seemed abandoned, and motioned for his spell studying accomplice to follow, as he opened the door and looked about. Inside was empty, save for chairs and tables and a chalk board to one side. It seemed ideal for the purpose, which was to study a more advanced spell - one from Transfiguration, no less. As it was, Harrison wasn't very confident with Transfiguration, so he wanted to try and get a leg up on the following year, by trying to learn with a friend who was markedly better than he.
Effie.
"Looks good, I think we can study here," Harrison said as he walked over to a desk and put the library book down. "Are we still doing the one we talked about?"
The book was opened to a specific page, with the title Vera Verto. It was a spell that could transform animals into water goblets. And for the purpose, Harrison had brought his owl - Swoop - and hoped it wouldn't hurt the feathered friend; though, Harrison supposed it wouldn't, otherwise Hogwarts wouldn't teach the spell to begin with, right?

Transfiguration was an exciting subject and Effie was glad to study it on her free time. Learning some more advanced spells was an especially appealing idea, because then she could impress her classmates with her aptitude for what was considered to be one of the most difficult magical disciplines.
"Yes, we should do the one we planned for. Otherwise Rumpelstiltskin will be upset I brought him all the way here and didn't involve him in the lesson one bit." The toad in question croaked in response, blissfully unaware of what was about to happen. The Ravenclaw placed it on the desk close to the book before quickly re-reading the familiar information. "Okay, so we tap the animal of choice with the wand three times and say the incantation while picturing the desired end result in our mind..." Didn't sound too complicated to her, though it also wasn't as simple as beginner spells they were currently being taught. "Would you like to try first?"

Harrison nodded slowly as Effie mentioned her toad, Rumpelstiltskin, and knew the practice was locked in. There was some hesitation using Swoop, since the spell outlined that specific animals were better for the task, but Harrison wouldn't have felt right practicing on someone else's pet - he barely felt comfortable with his own owl. But, the young Gryffindor wasn't a quitter, and he didn't back down from any challenge, not to mention Effie was waiting on him!
"Okay, three taps and say the incantation," Harrison nodded as he stood up and walked over to where Swoop perched on a table. "I'll do my best... sorry, girl."
With a slight grimace, Harrison tapped the owl's head three times - which Swoop glared back at him for - and then said the words:
"Vera Verto."
There was a flash, Harrison blinked, and then saw what seemed like the top of a cup where the owl's head should have been... while the rest of her body remained unchanged. That didn't seem right, and Swoop began to flap her wings, probably surprised by the sudden loss of big owl eyes, to which Harrison rushed forward and began stroking her plumage to try and calm the bird.
"Ahh! You try," the Gryffindor called as he dodged wing flaps and feathers. "I'll undo this!"
Harrison raised his wand to reverse the process...

Oh, no. Euphemia stared at Harrison's poor owl, suddenly not so sure about trying a spell on her own beloved companion. She frowned. "I think you pronounced it wrong. It should be Fera, not Vera."
The toad now seemed to suspect what was was to come because it was currently creeping away from the book and towards the end of the desk. She picked him up and carried him over to another desk, further away from the flapping wings of the half-transformed owl. With her wand, Effie gently tapped Rumpelstiltskin three times and incanted, "Fera Verto." There was a bluish-silvery swirl, and the amphibian transformed into a crystal water goblet. "Harrison, look! It worked!" She didn't dare to lift the goblet for closer inspection, lest it break - what would happen to the animal that had been transfigured in such an unfortunate case?

Amid the flapping and attempts to calm the owl, Harrison heard Effie mention the correct phrasing - Fera - which made the boy's eyebrows frown as he thought. Still, he also had to help Swoop, and with a swish of his wand - and following a brief flash - the owl was back to normal; though, understandably, the bird glared at Harrison with big yellow eyes and an owl expression of annoyance.
Harrison offered a sheepish smile.
Yet, across the way, Effie exclaimed and Harrison turned to see that her toad, Rumpelstiltskin, was a goblet. She had done it!
"Guess you're right about the incantation," Harrison said as he grinned and relished in his friend's accomplishment. "I'll try with Fera now, fingers crossed..."
The owl turned her head quickly between both students, then stared at Harrison, as he raised his wand. Perhaps a moment to fly away passed through the bird's mind, but the opportunity was gone, as the boy tapped Swoop three times and said more clearly:
"Fera Verto!"
There was a bluish-silvery swirl, Harrison blinked, then looked to Swoop--
"Oh."
--who had transformed more into a goblet, but not completely. Though this time she was a cup with owl legs, ones that hopped back and forth on the table - it was close. It seemed Harrison would need to practice the Transfiguration spell a bit more, before he could get the same results as Effie; but that was fine, he knew that particular subject wasn't his best, especially conjuration magic, and instead prepared himself to settle in for a long night of study.
"Well... I'm going to keep trying it. Did you want to stay and help?"
Harrison could understand if not, but he remained hopeful.
Either way, Harrison raised his wand, and prepared to cast the spell again, and again, and again for as long as he needed to get it just right...

Effie felt proud of herself. Not every first year could turn a small animal into a water goblet on their first try! But she did feel slightly anxious about bringing Rumpelstiltskin back to his original form. What if she failed? What if he got stuck half-way? Some professor would probably be able to fix it but she didn't want the poor creature feeling anguished. "Reparifarge." Another swirl, in the opposite direction than the previous one, and the toad was back - looking completely normal, although perhaps mildly disoriented.
Eyes sparkling with joyful pride, she turned to Harrison. "Sure, I can help. We can practice as long as you like, until both of us can cast it easily." Not that she was in any hurry to repeat the spell on her pet just yet. Some recovery time was due. She just hoped that Swoop would be fine after this evening - the owl wasn't having a good time at the moment. Nonetheless, it seemed that second years who had pets were made to practice on them, perhaps to ensure maximum diligence, so they weren't truly doing anything out of the ordinary here.
