Jan 2024
The new year had begun, and with it came a newfound motivation in Rose to excel in her classes. Maybe it was hearing about how well Andy was doing in all his classes, or her mother’s glowing reputation looming above her, but Rose knew she needed to work harder if she was to live up to her family’s name. So when Harrison had brought up the idea of studying second year spells to get a head start, Rose jumped at the chance. If she could go into second year already knowing some of the spells, she’d for sure get a good reputation as an academically inclined student, hopefully impressing the professors and her family.
After some prodding and not-so-subtle questions, she got Andy to tell her a bit about the spells they would learn the following year, and started doing some research into them. Some of them were quite boring, some of them seemed a bit too dangerous to practice inside the school (and there was no way Rose wanted to stand outside in the cold studying a new spell), but then she came across Volucri Religas. It was perfect! She loved Transfiguration, it was one of her favourite classes, and also known as a particularly difficult subject. If she could master a second year spell as a first year, that would for sure prove she was as smart as her parents!
So she’d taken some time over the first few weeks back at school to scavenge around the grounds for beetles. It wasn’t easy, considering it was winter, but she’d managed to find some hidden underneath a few dead logs near the forbidden forest, and captured them in a jar. That jar was currently sitting on a coffee table in the common room, next to which Rose was sitting on the floor, surrounded by Transfiguration textbooks. She’d grabbed everything she could find on the subject from the library, wanting to be as prepared as possible. Now she just had to wait for Harrison to arrive. She’d told him a few days ago to meet her in the common room that evening for some studying. Hopefully he hasn’t forgotten… she thought, impatiently watching the minutes go by.
TAGGED: HARRISON POOLE Notes: After some further thought, I decided this would probably be one of the better spells to start with, and most realistic for them to be able to practice in an area like the common room. Hope this is okay!

Harrison walked down from his dorm room dressed in his Gryffindor PJs with his school robe over him, as he hummed some song he had heard - or made up, he didn't know. The common room for the House was pretty cool, it was all crimson and wood and motifs of lions and stuff, so spending time in the communal space was something Harrison enjoyed. He saw Rose quickly, who was situated nearby at a table with a heap of Transfiguration books and notes and...
"Hi, Rose! Are those beetles?!"
Harrison quickened his step and rushed over to the table. He crouched down and picked up the jar, as he peered through the glass and offered a toothy grin, staring at the little critters with delight. He looked to Rose and kept the smile, as he put the jar down carefully, then eyed her notes and things. It seemed like the universe was telling Harrison to improve his Transfiguration. And it was definitely one of his weaker subjects, so maybe that was a good thing.
Harrison caught the title of a book page:
"Volucri Religas?" he asked, eyebrow raised. "Haven't heard of that one... what's it do, and how do we do it?"

Luckily for Rose and her impatience, it wasn’t much longer before Harrison came down to join her from the boys dorms, humming a little tune. She waved at him to make sure he noticed where she was set up, smiling when he noticed the beetles and lifted them up to observe them closer. “Yep! Took me a little while to find these lil guys,” she motioned towards the four beetles moving around in the jar. She’d added some leaves and twigs in there for them to use either as shelter or as sustenance. After all, she didn’t want to kill them. They needed to be alive for this spell.
“It’s a Transfiguration spell,” Rose started to explain, grabbing one of the books next to her. “We are going to turn these beetles into buttons.” She turned to a page in the book and showed Harrison a moving image illustrating the spell. “You got the incantation right, Volucri Religas, and the wand motion is like this,” she picked up her wand and demonstrated the motion, a wave to the right finishing in a loose downward spiral. “I’m thinking we should probably practice a few times before we release the beetles. They are wicked fast.” Rose had had a hard enough time capturing them, as they always scuttered away when she’d come close. She definitely didn’t want them to escape before they were able to properly perform the spell.

"Yeah, I bet," Harrison grinned as Rose told him about the effort to capture the little crawlies. "I could have helped... next time, def!"
Harrison could appreciate the effort his fellow Gryffindor put in, especially for the study session, and next time he wanted to handle the preparations. It seemed fair. Other than that, though, it was time to begin the summary and initial look at the spell itself. Turned out it was a Transfiguration spell, which weren't some of Harrison's strongest spells he had to admit, but that didn't mean he wouldn't try his best.
"Ahh, okay, okay," the boy nodded as he watched the explanation of the wand movement closely. "So a wave and like a spirally thing? Cool!"
Harrison pulled out his own wand and nodded again when Rose suggested a practice run.
"Smart."
Rose was definitely smart.
In his mind, Harrison recited the spell - even mumbling a little bit every so often - as he waved and swirled the wand, spiral and all at the end. He felt... confident-ish, though glanced over to Rose to see how she was doing. He also had been wondering:
"Oh, curious, do you like certain spells or classes?"
Harrison didn't mean to distract, but he also had questions about study, so he figured it would be fine...

After practicing the spell motion a number of times, muttering the incantation under her breath to get the timing right, Rose felt confident she was prepared to try it for real. She looked up at Harrison to see him looking back at her. It seemed they were both thinking the same thing, checking in with each other to ensure they were ready.
“Astronomy is probably my favourite class,” Rose responded to his question, “Mainly because I love looking up at the stars when I can’t sleep.” Over the past few years she had become a bit of an insomniac, often staying up late and struggling to get to sleep. It had gotten better since being at Hogwarts, but she still enjoyed the peace of gazing up at the night sky. “Flying class, of course, but I’ve been flying for as long as I can remember. I’m also really enjoying Transfiguration so far. That’s why I picked this spell to study,” Rose finished with a smile. “What about you? I’ve seen you in charms, you’re brilliant. Is there another subject you’re enjoying?”
She reached over to the jar on the table, pulling it closer to them. “Alright, I think I’m ready to try this for real. Do you feel ready?” She looked over to Harrison for confirmation and began unscrewing the lid on the container. Once he gave the go ahead, she titled the jar over, and slowly lowered the lid. The beetles began making their way forward to the newly opened exit. She quickly grabbed one before it could make its escape, and waited for Harrison to grab his before closing it back up. The last two were backups, in case something went wrong or their beetles escaped.
“They are quick little buggers so we’ll have to be quick,” she cautioned, slowly opening up her hand and placing her beetle onto the coffee table. As soon as its legs hit the wood, it started skittering away. “Volucri Religas!” Rose quickly cast towards the beetle, unfortunately hitting just to the right of it. The beetle swerved away from the jet of light and moved in a different direction. “Volucri Religas,” she tried again, just barely hitting it this time. She watched its head begin to transform, then its body… and then stop. She had a button with legs. Eyebrows scrunching in frustration, she picked up the beetle button, watching its little legs wiggle as she lifted it from the table top. The sight was so weird she burst into laughter, glancing over at Harrison to see how he was doing. “Look, Harry, it’s a run away button!” She cackled, holding up her beetle to show him, its legs still waving in the air like it was trying to escape.

Harrison listened attentively, as he nodded. Rose seemed to like some things he did, but also some stuff he didn't, which was kind of cool. It meant they had different likes and some of them were unique to each other, but then others that they could share. It was similar to Effie, really, another of Harrison's friends. So far it had been a pretty good friendship, where both he and Effie could meet up for some things, and do their own thing - so maybe the same could happen for him and Rose!
"I love flying," the boy exclaimed in agreement. "It's amazing. I never knew we could fly without planes and stuff, that was so cool to find out!"
Harrison nodded.
Transfiguration wasn't his best class, if not one of his worst. But that was fine. There was that potential to join forces and defeat all the classes!
"I kinda like everything about Hogwarts, but I struggle in Potions and Transfiguration." Harrison said with a little thought, as he glanced up to consider. "And thanks! I've been finding Charms and Defense pretty fun, I've been able to just... get the charms spells, I guess? Like, I can just see them in my head and how they should be. It's weird maybe. I dunno?"
Still, they had to focus on the task, too. Harrison found Rose super easy to talk to. With a nod, Harrison took Rose's advice, and he quickly reached into the jar to grab a bug before he put the lid back in place. Once his own was on the table, he pointed his wand and... burst into laughter as Rose held up a button beetle, complete with legs that were moving rapidly!
"Oooooh no," he said between giggles. "That's rough but kinda hilarious, too."
It reminded him--
"Where's mine?" Harrison said, mostly to himself, before he saw his selected beetle rushing down the table leg. "Hey!"
With a quick dive to the carpet, the boy pointed his wand and began the incantation - along with the wand movement of the wave and spiral - and sought to cast the spell:
"Volucri Religas!"
And with a flash, the beetle flipped into the air, before it landed with a mostly transformed body. Mostly. Actually, it was pretty similar to Rose's button bug, which caused Harrison to choke on some more laughter. He reached out and picked the little thing up and held it up to his friend--

Rose had never realized how odd broom flying might be to those who hadn’t grown up around magic. For her it was so run of the mill, it was interesting to hear about it from a muggle-born’s perspective. “I’ve never been on a plane before, although my mum has told me about them. Are they fun?” She asked out of curiosity.
She was enjoying getting to know Harrison a bit better. It would be nice to have a friend in her own house, and in her own year. “Don’t worry, I can help you with Transfiguration if you need. But if I’m having issues with any Charms, I'll come straight to you.” She laughed a bit, indicating that she was teasing, although her offer for help was genuine. She may not be as smart as her mum was at her age, but that didn’t mean she was completely helpless in the classroom.
Although if her beetle was any indicator, she still had a bit to learn before she was a fully proficient witch. Her giggles subsided for only a moment as she looked around for Harrison’s beetle, who was making a daring escape during his moment of distraction. He found the insect first, casting the spell with a dramatic dive to the floor, only to emerge with another half transformed button beetle. This sent Rose into hysterics. She nearly dropped her beetle as she howled with laughter.
“I think we may need a bit more practice,” she managed to say in between her chuckling. She placed her beetle back on the table as her laughter slowly subsided, trying to get herself to focus on the task at hand. Not easy when more giggles erupted every time she glanced at her button with legs, still trying valiantly to escape. She pointed her wand back at the beetle, “Reparifarge.” And just like that her beetle was back to a beetle. It was one of the first spells they had learned in Transfiguration that year. Quite useful considering how many failed attempts it sometimes took before accomplishing a spell correctly.
The beetle was quick, still trying to escape, but Rose blocked it with one hand, while casting the spell once again with the other. “Volucri Religas.” The beetle began to transform, slowly but surely, until… almost there! It only had its little antennas left. Still not too bad for a second attempt. At least this time the legs were gone so it couldn’t run away from her.

"Oh, I dunno," Harrison said with a blink. "I haven't been on one, either. But they go really, really fast - like, way over any broom speed!"
The offer to help one another was met with a friendly nod, which helped alleviate some of Harrison's uncertainty with the two classes he mentioned. It was nice to know support in the House was available, and maybe there was a chance the pair could become good study buddies for however many years to come. Yet, before that, there was the pesky issue about the beetles that refused to turn - fully - into buttons...
"Reparifarge!" Harrison called, as he fired his wand at the half-transfigured creature, and watched as it morphed back into itself. "Practice sounds good to me, for sure."
The little beetle tried to scamper away, which caused Harrison to lean to and fro, as he herded the bug with his hands. He was careful not to crush it. After a few moments, the boy had his beetle cornered, but paused to watch Rose perform her spell first. She did a pretty good job, too, as the thing almost became a button fully, save for one of the head bits that popped out like a long hair.
Harrison blanked on the name.
"Wow, nice," he said with a grin, as he nodded enthusiastically. "That's almost there. I think you've got this spell well on the way!"
In turn, Harrison looked back to his cornered beetle, and pointed his wand - "Volucri Religas!" - and watched as the thing began to spin and flop, as the legs began to disappear, and the form of a button remained on the table... except for the little beetle head, which looked about from the button body confused. Poor little thing. Harrison grimaced, then offered a sheepish smile to his friend.
"I'll probably have to try again..."
Well, what was it they said? Practice was perfect!

“Thanks!” Rose responded to Harrison’s compliment, proud to be complimented for her academic accomplishments, particularly in Transfiguration. “Ooh, so do you!” She added once Harrison had completed his second attempt, hoping to encourage him as he did her. Although the sight of the beetle so confused as to its body transformation did have her stifling a few more giggles. No, she had to focus, no more giggle fits. She had to get this spell done right.
While Rose was confident most of the time, particularly regarding her athletic prowess, she was more self-conscious regarding her skills in class. She was always acutely aware of her mother’s accomplishments and trying to live up to her, even though Hermione had never actually put such expectations on Rose herself. It was all Rose who placed the pressure on herself, worried if she didn’t do well she would disappoint her family, even though they had never indicated that would ever be the case.
Hence her desire to prove her prowess in Transfiguration, and practice more advanced spells in her free time. “Reparifarge,” she cast once more, turning her button back into a full beetle. “Volucri Religas!” Back and forth it went for a few more attempts. One attempt there were two legs and one antenna remaining, another only half its body changed into the button shape, and another one had the right shape but the texture wasn’t obviously wrong, still feeling like a beetle shell. Rose lost count of her number of attempts, feeling slightly bad for the poor beetle flipping and flopping in the air as it got transfigured and un-transfigured multiple times.
Until finally, she got it. “Volucri Religas!” She watched the beetle spin, its body morphing in shape, its legs disappearing, and last its head until all there was left was a regular button. She picked it up, turning it over in her hand a few times inspecting her work, a bright smile spreading on her face. “Look! Harry! I think I got it!” She showed him the button in her hand. It was a simple black button, very basic, but if you’d asked Rose at that moment, it was amazing.

Harrison kept one eye on his beetle-button and one on Rose. He saw the determination and effort she made, which caused him to double down on his own, as he became likewise dedicated to success with the spell. While the boy could admit to struggling in Transfiguration, he did feel that Rose was like a positive influence that helped him focus and do his best. That was probably ideal in a study buddy, and a friend, which gave Harrison a smile as he continued trying.
"Reparifarge! Volucri Religas!"
It didn't work, with the effort comparable to the last.
"Reparifarge! Volucri Religas!"
Another failure, as Harrison scowled with concentration, prepared to continue.
"Reparifarge! Volucri Religas!"
The beetle barely changed.
"Oh?" Harrison looked over as Rose called. "Hey, you did it! That's totally a button, all the way!"
That caused the boy to grin broadly, as he felt genuine happiness for his fellow Gryffindor, as she succeeded. For his own part, Harrison had been a little all over the shop, with varying results, yet hadn't managed to turn his beetle into a button just yet. He had stopped counting, though considering how often he had said Reparifarge, he guessed it was double Rose's attempts - and that was being kind.
And she called me Harry - that means we're friends!
Urged on by Rose's effort and caught up in the excitement of success, Harrison pressed on! The wand was pointed, the spell cast, the beetle not quite transformed; and it would happen again, and again, and another time, before - finally - the attempt happened that seemed to get it:
"Volucri Religas!"
On the table, the beetle wobbled and flipped, as all its limbs and bits tucked and transformed. It landed with a soft clink on the table, spinning, and stopped to reveal the button. Harrison stared for a moment, expecting another failure, but then blinked and turned to Rose. "I did it, too!" He exclaimed with eyes wide and mouth open. He was clearly surprised, but that didn't diminish the success, albeit a time after Rose's own.
"W-what do we do now?" Harrison slowly asked, as he raised an eyebrow. "Should we keep practicing? Or maybe find something to eat, I'm kinda hungry..."
Either way, Harrison was happy to continue spending time with Rose.

Rose smiled broadly when her friend accomplished the spell as well, both of them proudly holding their buttons in triumph. Then came the question verbalized by Harrison, what did they do now that they had accomplished it? There really wasn’t much practical use for the spell, and Rose was herself getting a bit tired of homework. The mention of food, however, sparked her interest. “Merlin, yes, please! My dad told me where to find the entrance to the kitchens. Apparently the house elves are really nice and will get us whatever we want.”
Rose was bracing herself to stand up when she remembered the beatles. She didn’t want to just leave them there, and she felt a bit bad leaving the two transformed as buttons. She quickly made up her mind, cast “Reparifarge!” on both of their buttons, and returned them to the glass jar with their friends. “But first let’s just drop these guys off outside,” she suggested, standing up holding the jar, looking forward to enjoying the rest of their evening free of school work.
