Classes were done for the day, but Lottie was wandering the corridors. She just needed to go on a walk. A lot of her classes today were sitting down and she needed to get some exercise! Maybe she should join Quidditch. She really thought it was fantastic and both of her parents did it. She just wanted to find her own voice too, though.
Up ahead, she saw someone mulling about outside the Charms classroom and she wondered what they were doing there. When she got closer, she saw that it was her friend Lia. Lottie picked up her pace and jogged towards her.
"Is everything okay, Lia? What are you doing over here? Did Channing curse you to stay out here or something?" Lottie didn't like Professor Channing at all. She wasn't very nice, especially to Gryffindors. Even Lottie's mum didn't have nice things to say about her and she usually never had something bad to say about anyone. At least, she wouldn't to Lottie anyway.

Okay I’ll go in now. Alright… now. No, now. I’ll really do it… now. Lia sighed deeply as she tried to take the next step into the Charms classroom. After struggling for what felt like hours while practicing the Softening Charm, she had decided that maybe it was time to ask for help. So in her state of frustrated determination, she had left the Hufflepuff common room and marched all the way over to the Charms classroom to ask Professor Channing for… advice? Tutoring? She hadn’t really thought this through. Professor Channing wasn’t particularly the most helpful professor, but who else could she ask?
Her question seemed to have been answered when she heard a familiar voice coming up behind her. She turned around to see Lottie walking towards her. This was perfect! Lottie was a year older, so she must know how to cast the Softening Charm. Maybe she could help! “Hi Lottie,” she greeted with a small laugh at her comment about Professor Channing cursing her to the spot. Lia definitely wouldn’t put that above the professor. When she got annoyed, one definitely wouldn’t want to get in her way. “Yeah, I’m fine. I was just… thinking of asking Professor Channing for something…” she trailed off as she glanced back at the door, before looking back at Lottie.
“But maybe you can help instead. Did you maybe study the softening charm last year? Cause I’ve been kind of struggling with it. I can make the edges of my rock soft, but the center is always hard! And I don’t know what I’m doing wrong! I’ve been trying for hours and I just can’t get it!” Her voice got more and more animated as she went on, her frustration bubbling over after so much time spent bent over a rock trying to turn it into a spongy surface. “Am I saying the incantation wrong? Or is it the wand movement? I’ve been following the spellbook exactly, and everyone else seems to have no problem, but I just… I just can’t do it!” She threw her arms up in surrender, tears starting to spring in the corners of her eyes.
Lia had been struggling with spellcasting since she had started at Hogwarts. She would get it eventually, but it took a lot more work than it did for others, and it was starting to take its toll on the young Hufflepuff. She wiped her eyes with the back of her hand. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to… sorry,” she mumbled, looking away from Lottie, embarrassed her friend saw her mini meltdown.

"Oh..." Lottie's gaze cast downward before she looked at her friend. "Are you sure that's a good idea?" Asking for something from Channing didn't seem a good idea at all. She wasn't very friendly. Actually, that was quite the understatement. She was downright mean and not a very helpful person. She wasn't the type of teacher to go out of her way to use all her personal time helping out the students more. She was pretty scary too, but that barely even needed to be said.
"Softening, softening..." Lottie pondered. She couldn't quite remember. Probably because the incantation was so different. "Oh! Do you mean that sponge... Spong.. Spungify?" She was probably saying it wrong still. If that was even the one that Lia meant. "I think I did that last year, but I wouldn't really say I'm an expert." Lottie didn't think she'd be in a position where someone asked her to help with something beacuse she was more experienced than them. Not for a few years at least!
Lottie put her hand on Lia's shoulder for a brief moment. "I don't think that books are the problem here. I love them too but I don't think they help too much with spells. You have to... feel it? You might be focusing too much on it. I know something kind of soft and spongey though that could help! Come on!"
Lia had a bit of a meltdown and Lottie wanted to hug her but more than that, she wanted to cheer her up! She grabbed her hand and they started to run off towards the marble staircase, giggling along the way. At least Lottie was, it was a little silly that they were just running through the corridors and trying to hold hands while they did that was a little ridiculous too because of the way their bodies moved when running. Not letting go was a game of itself, seeing how long they could stay connected while running towards the moving staircase. Of course, maybe the staircase would have other plans, but Lottie needed them to get down the stairs to the Entrance Hall!

Lia looked up when she felt the Gryffindor’s hand on her shoulder, but deflated a bit when Lottie mentioned books may not be the solution to her problem, instead saying she had to feel the spells. But how? Lia didn’t understand what she was doing wrong. Her eyes were glistening with fresh tears, which she quickly wiped away with the back of her hand, hoping Lottie didn’t notice. She felt a sprinkle of hope when the older Gryffindor mentioned another solution to her problem, her lips slightly curving upwards into a smile, but before she could respond, Lottie had taken her hand and the two were moving down the multiple staircases through Hogwarts.
Lia couldn’t help but smile and giggle along with Lottie as they weaved their way through the maze of a school, her mood gradually improving as they went. “Where are we going?” Lia asked through her laughter as they reached the Entrance Hall, before continuing to make their way down to the basement. Lia was quite familiar with this area, as it was where her common room was located, but she didn’t understand where Lottie could be leading her in that area. They suddenly stopped in front of a painting she had passed dozens of times. She looked at the painting, wondering how it would help with her predicament, before looking back at Lottie with a questioning look.
