Blaise came bursting into the corridor from a secret set of stairs. He got quite lost from some very unhelpful portraits playing a trick on him! He was just glad yo finally be in the corridor again. But he had no idea where he was.
He went up to the nearest person he could see and there were very few people in the halls. He tapped on her shoulder. "Excuse me could you tell me where--" But he stopped when she turned around. "Oh. Sorry. I'm not supposed to... Um.." Blaise wasn't sure what he was supposed to do now. He wasn't allowed to talk to Thalia because of her mum. Does he just walk away rudely? No, he didn't want to seem mean. He waited to see what she would do first.

Thalia was heading to the library for a study session, feeling a bit irked. Her mother had found out about that P she got from History of Magic and sent a letter insisting that her daughter should be getting better grades than that. It's not even like Thalia was bad at the subject! She was good at most classes, at least good enough to receive passing grades. That P was only there because she had forgotten to do the homework assignment and wrote it in a rush a few minutes before the class. If there had been just a little more time, she might have even gotten an A or an E. Still, it was not an explanation that would placate Pancy Burke.
She whirled about when someone tapped her on the shoulder and started speaking. The corridor had just been empty! "Where did you come from?" the first-year inquired before even realizing who was the person that snuck up on her. "Oh--" It was the Headmisstress' son, the thief of most of her friends' spare time. Ella and Ezra were hanging out with him much more than they did with Thalia, and there wasn't much she could do about it without disobeying her mother's command to avoid this boy.
The situation was a bit awkward. Walking away would only serve to make it more so. Perhaps she should just quickly answer his question and then walk away. "You're on the fourth floor." There, she did the polite thing and both of them were free to go. Only... something Blaise had mumbled was nagging at her mind. Before she could rein in her curiosity, Thalia heard herself asking, "You're not supposed to what?"

Oh, no. She asked him a question! That demanded more conversation than he thought he was allowed to do. "Oh, um... I-- Well..." He suddenly realized it would be super rude to not answer her, though. And it wasn't as if he was trying to have a conversation with her. He wasn't sure if there was a rule about answering a question if she asked him. Probably not. He didn't think his mum would prefer rudeness over not talking to Thalia Burke.
"Well." He turned around looked at the way he had come before looking back at Thalia. "I got turned around, some painting said this was a shortcut, but... clearly not." Some rude painting wanting him to run around in circles!
"Oh, thanks. Yep, that's not at all where I wanted to be." He sighed, leaning his head back.
But then Thalia caught what he had almost said. Oh, no. He had already established that answering her would be a good thing to do so he wouldn't appear rude. But telling her the truth about his mother's rule? Well, he didn't think that would be good either. He didn't want Thalia or her mum hating on his mum. Well, the whole point was that their mums did hate each other, so he supposed that was moot at this point anyway.
He stood there for too long, thinking about it. So long that she probably noticed he was just standing there saying nothing for a moment.
He finally spoke. "Well..." He lowered his voice for the next part, saying it fairly quietly. "I'm not supposed to talk to you." Maybe she wouldn't hear him and pretend she did and be on her way. But the corridor wasn't crowded so unfortunately for Blaise, she very likely did hear him.

Upon hearing Blaise's answer, Thalia could only stare incredulously. So that's why he had never approached her. He stole all her friends, but never once tried to so much as chat with her. And it wasn't because she was a Slytherin, either, because he did talk to Dustin. Now it made sense. His mother had given him the same restriction that Thalia had received. Only this didn't seem fair at all, since his mother was the Headmistress and should care about all the kids at school equally, right?
Slowly, her expression changed into a frown. "That's not very nice, is it? I don't see why parents should decide which of our classmates we can or can't talk to." So far, obeying her mother had been easy - simply because Blaise never initiated an interaction. But now that she knew the reason for it, she thought it ridiculous. Both of their mothers were being far too overbearing about this, which was much worse than only Pansy being overbearing. "I mean, I know our moms didn't like each other at school but I don't see why we should make it a generational tradition. You talk to my cousins quite a lot, especially Ella, and I'm not that different from her."

Blaise didn't say it was his parent who said he wasn't supposed to talk to her... But of course, who else? Not likely Ella or Ezra would say that. But it did make him think, was Thalia's mum the same way? "You're right. It's not like she knew you when she said that. I wonder if she'd change her mind now."
"Is your mum the same way? Does she hate me already? Or she might not even know me, that would make more sense." Yeah, why would Thalia go around talking about Blaise? They weren't friends. Though she was right - all their friends were the same and it honestly was taking too much effort not to hang out. Blaise was very close with Ella and Dustin, who Thalia was closely related to.
Blaise made a decision then and stuck out his hand. "Let's ignore their past, then. They're not us. Friends?" He hoped she agreed, otherwise things might be even worse between them now that everything was out in the open.

Thalia opened her mouth to answer Blaise's question about her own mother, then shut it quickly as the boy continued talking. He seemed to have answered his own query... if a little incorrectly. She had, in fact, been forbidden to 'fraternize' with him. However, she wasn't about to correct him. Perhaps she could deal with the situation without ever letting him or her cousins find out her mother's initial views. After all, those views were bound to change once Pansy learned that Blaise was alright... weren't they?
She extended her own hand after the briefest of hesitations. "Yes, let's be friends," she agreed, trying to shake his hand firmly - it was supposed to show how trustworthy she was, or something like that. This wasn't too bad. Blaise seemed to be genuinely nice, and her mom wouldn't learn about this friendship in months - not until the summer break, with any luck. Dad wasn't likely to snitch on her - he didn't look pleased when Mom was instructing her not to be friendly with this boy. There was plenty of time for her to figure this out.
"So, where were you going? Maybe I could help you find the way." She was meaning to go and study in the library, but that didn't seem so important now. Strenghtening a new and excitingly secret friendship was higher on the priority list.

They shook hands and that was that, they were friends. It sure beat having to fight a bunch of teenage acromantulae to the death. It was much easier than that.
Thalia had a pretty firm grip, but it didn't surprise him. She wasn't exactly a meak little girl. She was definitely a strong little girl. At least personality wise. Blaise had yet to see her try to lift something heavy, that wasn't really something that happened a lot at Hogwarts. Even as first years, they knew how to lift things up with magic.
"Oh, um, yeah I was going to the Astronomy Tower. I was told there was a shortcut," Blaise said, a little sour at the painting who had played a trick on him. "But now I'm here."
It wasn't even night, but Blaise just wanted to hang out and see the view from up above. Sometimes it was just relaxing to do that. He hoped it would be allowed, though. It was the daytime, so there was no sneaking in unseen.
"Did you want to go out with me?" Thalia could have very well just pointed him in the right direction and been on her way. But as new friends, it would be nice to hang out a bit first.

The Astronomy Tower was pretty far from here. Thalia remembered Blaise mentioning it was a painting that gave him directions, and decided never to ask a painting for help. It might just be one malevolent piece of art misleading students for its own amusement, but still... being hung on a wall, stuck in a two-dimensional space had to be a dull life. Even if they could visit neighboring paintings, they were bound to start looking for other ways to amuse themselves. Well, they wouldn't get entertainment at her expense.
She was certain she could find the Astronomy Tower from here, though. Blaise probably could, too, now that he knew where he was. Still, joining him was an attractive idea. Thalia turned to start walking, but the Gryffindor's question froze her in place. "Um-- I'm not really--" she stammered, starting a sentence and not knowing how it should end. Go out with him? Was that the impression she gave when she offered to help him find the way? Oh, Merlin, even her dad would disapprove if she started going out with Blaise Cunningham. Or anyone, for that matter. There wasn't even anywhere to go out to, since they couldn't visit Hogsmeade until their third year. Not that it mattered, since she absolutely couldn't... Dad would probably tell Mom if he saw her so much as holding hands with a boy.
Her mind raced as she thought of all that and tried to come up with a response at the same time. The sound of someone bursting into tinny laughter didn't help at all. Utterly mortified, she looked around to see it was just a suit of armour. Was there a ghost hiding inside it? Or worse - Peeves..? The whole school would know of this in no time if it was the poltergeist...
Thalia looked back at Blaise, embarrassment clear on her face. "Sorry, I don't think I'm old enough for that," she maffled, the words coming out quickly as if that could speed up the resolution of the tricky situation. "You're probably not old enough, either." That came out in a bit clearer voice.
