It was a brisk afternoon. A light dusting of snow cover the Courtyard. Jack sat on one of the few benches scattered around the area, his charms book opened and wand at the ready. The book was opened to the levitation charm, an easy enough spell. It took the boy a few tries to get the dead leaf in front of him to even wiggle in place, but he was not about to give up.
”C’mon… C’mon… Wingardium Leviosa!”
At last the dead leaf lifted in the air. Well, more like hover off the ground a few centimeters, but still! It was a start! Not bad for a Muggleborn.

Blaise was just passing through the courtyard, not having too much on his plate, when he saw a friend on one of the benches. It looked like he was practicing magic. Upon further investigation, he was practicing the levitation charm. Blaise was okay at it but he had no idea how to help someone else with it.
"Hey, Jack!" he said. "How's it going?" He hoped it was going well. It was a little chilly to be out there for too long. At least not without moving around. There wasnt enough snow to play around in yet, though.

The spell book that had been opened in his lap fell to the ground as Jack was startled by the sound of the newcomer’s voice. He had been almost too focused on practicing the spell he hadn’t noticed. He turned his head and relaxed a bit when he saw Blaise. The Gryffindor boy was friendly to him at least.
“Oh, it’s just you Blaise,” Jack greeted, “I’m uh… I’m just practicing the levitation charm. Just trying to be prepared…”

"Prepared for what?" Blaise couldn't think of a dangerous situation where the levitation charm would be useful. What could they do? Float a feather at a dark creature? But then he realized not everything was about fighting for your life and that his dangerous times at Hogwarts weren't the same for everyone.
"Ohhh, you mean exams, right? Well I'm no expert but I can practice with you." He smiled and then sat beside Jack. "What areyou practicing on?"

Jack reached down to pick up the spell book he dropped, brushing off the snow that clung to the pages.
”Just practicing with that leaf over there,” Jack said as he gestured to it with his wand, “Really I’m just going through the book trying out the spells. Exams may be coming up and I don’t want to look like a fool.”
He fiddled around nervously with the wand in his hands. He was always constantly worried about what others thought of him, especially with his heritage. It was a spiral of thinking he knew he had to get over. Jack just didn’t want to be the subject of ridicule. At least he had done a great job in making himself scarce this year, which helped his paranoia a bit.

"Oh, cool!" It was light enough, like a feather. Blaise was sure that would be pretty easy to do. At least easier than heavier objects. "Oh, what other ones are you doing?" Blaise grabbed the book and flipped through it. Alohomora, Bluebell Flame, Fire... Fire would have been useful in that moment, since it was winter. Maybe they could practice that one after. Of course, doing it wrong had a lot more disasterous effects than doing the levitation charm wrong.
"Well let's see. You try first, then I'll go!" Blaise hoped that would be okay. It sounded like a good plan to him, anyway.

Jack gave Blaise a nervous sort of look. Practicing spells in class was one thing, but in the somewhat privacy of the courtyard with a set of eyes on him, it puts pressure on one self. He took the book back from the Gryffindor boy, thumbing through the pages to find a suitable spell. It had to be a good one. One that was impressive should he pull it off, but not dangerous enough to get the boys into trouble or worse...
He settled on the Severing Charm. He quickly skimmed the description, it didn't seem too dangerous as long as nothing got in the way. His brown eyes looked around for something to cut before he found a nearby tree with some pretty young looking branches on it. Perfect... So long as a bird or something doesn't fly in the way.
He raised his wand, focusing as hard as he could. He took a deep breath...
"Diffindo..." He said. A few tree branches shook from the rush of magic with one lone branch snapped in two, barely hanging on by fibers. Almost had it. He sat up straighter, and spoke louder, not wanting to look a fool in front of the Gryffindor. "Diffindo!"
This time the branch sliced clean off, the spell taking two more thin twigs with it. A small smile of pride grew on his face.

Blaise didn't recognize the spell when the boy started trying to do it. It wasn't going very well but then he did it! Blaise saw what it did and realized what the spell was. "Whoa! Isn't that a third year spell? That's really impressive!" Blaise wasn't correct, though. It was, in fact, a fourth year spell.
"I don't know if I could try that one, but... hmm..." he tried to think of one to show off too, but it wouldn't be as good as Jack by far. "Ignis Dissilient!" he said, pointing at the ground. "Ignis Dissili-ient!" Nothing happened two times in a row. "Oh, wait. Ignis dissiliunt!" He finally said it correct and some small fireworks came out of his wand. He jept them low and small so a professor or Prefect wouldn't see and come running. It was a second year spell but he had been practicing for fun because fireworks are fun!
"Not as cool as yours, but I like fireworks." Blaise shrugged. He also felt a little pressure to be good at charms like his mum, even though she never pressured him. He just felt it anyway because of who she was.

Jack blinked in awe at Blaise’s spell. It looked powerful, but small and deliberately contained. When Blaise complimented his own spell, Jack found himself shaking his head.
“What are you talking about?” He asked with a raise of his eyebrow, “I barely managed to make three tiny twigs fall off the tree. Now your spell, that was real impressive. How did you do it?”
To the young Ravenclaw, it looked like a practiced spell, one that he imagined Blaise liked to show off to his fellow Gryffindors from time-to-time. Or maybe it was his first time casting a spell higher than their current skill level, he would have definitely have Jack fooled.

"But it's a really advanced spell for us! The fact that you could do anything at all is extremely impressive!" Fireworks were very showy but Jack being able to do a fourth year spell (Blaise thought it was third year, though) was way cooler.
"Oh, there isn't a wand movement or anything. Just kind of point your wand where you want the fireworks to go. I did down but I guess you could do straight up too. Just don't point it at someone." Blaise chuckled. "And it's Ignis Dissiliunt. I was saying it wrong at first, so it wasn't working." Blaise wasn't sure how to teach someone to do something. His mum was always great at that, though. "Oh! And I think you need to umm imagine the fireworks like you'd like them to be." He wasn't sure about that part. He guessed probably the colours or something.
"If you try, I'm sure you'd be amazing at it!" he added. If Jack could do that other advanced spell he definitely could do this one.

Jack shot him a nervous sort of look before focusing his attention on his wand. Sure he was lucky enough to manage casting a fourth-year spell on the second try, even if it did only slice a few twigs. Somehow this one made him tense. These were fireworks he was dealing with. Hot, burning fireworks who’s rogue embers could burn him or worse… explode.
Yet Blaise kept looking at him with encouragement and excitement.
He had to try.
With another deep breath he closed his eyes and focused hard on the fireworks in his mind, the explosion of colors. He pointed his cedar wand up towards the sky and opened his eyes up again. “Ignis Dissiliunt!”
It… wasn’t as spectacular as he had hoped, nor dignified. As soon as the spark shot out of his wand, he let out a startled yelp and dropped it. Embers barely grazing his hand, burning him enough to hurt for a moment but not show marks. At least a single small blue firework made an appearance. He could at least be proud of that.
”I don’t think fireworks are my thing yet,” Jack said sheepishly as he bent down to collect his want, “but maybe I can show you how to cast Diffindo.”

Blaise's eyes widened when Jack dropped his wand and some of the embers from the firework got on his hand. "You alright?" he said, concerned for his friend. He hoped Jack wasn't hurt, especially not from a spell he told him about. Blaise would owe him some sweets for sure.
"Don't worry, you just need to practice. I've never done a spell right on my first try." If Jack had, that would be super impressive.
"Oh, I don't know about that..." Blaise said, trailing off. He had a hard enough time learning spells from his own year or a year above. A fourth year spell would either never work or maybe he would do something disastrous.
"But maybe he could try something else!" He pondered about it for a moment. "We could practice the tickling charm!" That could be fun maybe. Unless Jack didn't like being tickled. Some people didn't.
