Being away from his home country and meeting new students was one of the excellent perks of being part of the games. An Aussie boy in Italy was rare let alone a student wizard. Whilst sitting in the Plaza, he wondered what type of life he would have here if he chose to stay. He had been thinking about transferring schools however he also knew that Dark Arts was a popular subject and weirdly enough, Calvin was fascinated by it. However, he knew that there was a prejudice about learning this type of magic. His school didn't offer the subject and he only wished that he was able to learn more about it. Hogwarts was also an iconic school. He did have family in London so he wouldn't mind the change either. Sitting on a nearby empty seat, he took out a small text book about the theory of dark magic and began to read

Silvia was wandering the palace aimlessly, feeling restless. The third task was still weeks away, but she felt anxious about it already. She had earned a significant lead, which made people expect her to win. So now, if she did win, it wouldn't be such a big deal - or so it seemed to her. But if she lost, if she squandered her lead due to some failure, her schoolmates would be all the more disappointed...
She entered the plaza, seeking the warm, calming effects of sunlight. Spotting Calvin there, the blonde wavered. Chatting with opponents in this tournament always felt a little strange to her, as if both parties were sizing each other up. Then again, the official purpose for the event was making international connections - and she hadn't been doing much of that.
Noting the title of the book he was perusing, she decided to approach him. At least there would be a solid start to their conversation. "Hey, Calvin. I didn't know Augustine taught Dark Arts... Do you like studying it?" Most American and European schools had such negative views on the subject that she felt the need to approach this carefully, just in case it was also the case in Australia.

He was so engrossed about learning about a dark ghoul he had never really heard of that the sudden calling of hiss name caused him to jump just a little. “ Oh, Silvia.” He replied closing the book placing his bookmark on the chapter about Inferi. “ Sorry if you’ve been standing there quite a bit. “ He replied with a smile holding up his book and waving it slightly. “ It’s such a fantastic topic!!” He replied showing excitement in his tone.
“ Unfortunately… “ He began to speak as he shrugged his shoulders thinking how comfortable it felt to speak to someone about this topic without being judged about it. “ My school doesn’t teach Dark Arts and only a select few really get into it back home. “ Even in Australia, learning about the Dark Arts and Dark Magic was looked dow upon. There was something so interesting about it that fascinated Calvin.
He had forgotten that Silvia was another champion from another school and mainly focused not he friendship the two had The two had somewhat bonded over the last round in the tent and Calvin was quite happy if Silvia did win this. She was a formidable witch. “ Does your school teach it? “ He asked with a curious tone in his voice.

The eagerness in Calvin's voice was encouraging. After leaving Selveira and before starting at Dahshur, she hadn't even met anyone who was interested in Dark Arts, and not just in the defense aspect. Of course, maybe if she spent more time hanging out with Slytherins, she would have met more people like that. She grinned and sat down on the bench next to him. "It really is, but many people are so touchy about it. It's as though merely being intrigued by the subject automatically makes one a Death Eater or something..." She paused, unsure if the Australian boy got the reference. The European wars of the late last century were far removed from his continent, but they must have made it to international history books, surely?
She blinked and glanced down at the textbook briefly when Calvin admitted it wasn't part of Augustine curriculum. "Oh, so you're trying to study it on your own?"
The conversation shifted to her own education then, and Silvia's lips formed a disappointed smile. "It does, but I'm tragically behind my classmates. I was at Selveira for three years, then Salem for one year, then Hogwarts for two years. Selveira did teach Dark Arts in the first and second year, but it's nothing major since the kids are so young then. I don't know why they don't continue after the second year - it's just defense from then on. Salem didn't have Dark Arts at all, neither did Hogwarts. Well, they do have Dark Arts theory starting sixth year, but I transferred in my fifth. So now I have a lot of catching up to do if I want to get a good NEWT grade on the subject." That was a long speech; she tried to condense it as much as possible, but that was still more than she'd said to any other champion during a single conversation.

It seemed Silvia was also interested in learning about dark magic and it was rather interesting that the two shared a common theme between them. Calvin's eyes sparkled hearing how Silvia spoke about dark magic. The prejudice associated with learning this type of magic often meant that people did this type of learning in the shadows far away from the judgemental eyes of the common wizarding community. " Yeah I know what you mean. " Although Australia didn't have much of a history during the dark times, he did know what Death Eaters were given they had to study about Hogwarts during their History of Magic subject.
He shrugged his shoulders before taking in a gasp of air. " Well, I've been trying to learn about it. " he said making reference to his book. " A lot of this has been about the theory of dark magic rather than actually practising it. " There had to be more to dark magic than just learning about why and what causes dark magic to harm someone. " I'd not only like to learn it for the skill but also because I think there's actually a lot we can get out of it. " Calvin was quite passionate about sharing his observations about this topic.
" Like, there has to be charms in the dark magic world that could protect us from certain things that our current goody goody magic doesn't. Like, the common person won't encounter dark beings often but we should be learning not only how to protect ourselves but also how to create or the process of how a dark being was made. " He added making reference to Inferi, ghouls and the lot.
" Wow, so you've changed schools quite a bit then. " He replied hoping the next question he asked wouldn't be too intruding. " Why if you don't mind me asking? " His curiosity got the better of him when he asked that hoping there was a reason for all the school changes. " So at least you've got some kinda learnings in it? Maybe you could teach me something? "

She nodded in agreement to Calvin's passionate speech about Dark Arts. "Exactly! I want to be a Curse Breaker, and learning more about dark spells seems vital to me. There are curses that need a specific counter, not just a general defensive spell. If I am to lift ancient curses, I need to understand how they were produced, I need to try out the magic for myself to have an accurate idea of how it works. Theory isn't enough." The chance to learn Dark Arts had been one of the biggest pros of transferring to Dahshur. Well, that and just getting out of Hogwarts.
Silvia glanced down when Calvin asked about all her school transfers. How much should she share? Her resolution to never again hide what she was faltered now - only because it would seem like oversharing, of course... She looked up at Calvin again. "My parents travelled for work a lot and wanted me to study close to where they were employed at the time. Then my dad had an accident with a curse getting released from an artefact, which put him into a coma. He was brought to St Mungo's in London, and I transferred to Hogwarts so I could visit." There was only a brief hesitation before she continued. "It was great to study there for a while, until someone found out that I am part-Veela and released a rumour that I'd been Charming popular boys, taking away their free will or something along those lines... My mom had gone to work in Egypt at that time, and spent months trying to convince me to transfer to Dahshur because it's the best school for an aspiring Curse Breaker. After those rumours about me were spread, I caved and went to Egypt too." She shrugged, indicating that she was over the unsavoury business. "It turned out better than I expected, what with Dodeca."
Firenze was great, but one significant flaw bothered her. The school did not teach Dark Arts, and the Dahshur professors were only allowed to teach its theory while on Firenze grounds. That was better than nothing, but still... It had been a while since she last practiced Dark Arts. She couldn't be sure if anything she still retained would be useful to Calvin. "Well... I could give it a shot. What do you already know about this type of magic, what have you tried?"

He'd never met someone so passionate about the same things he was. It was rare to find someone who also shared the same view on dark magic as he did. Especially considering he had come from a school that was known to highly be against the use of dark magic. Australia didn't have many dark magic practitioners so wanting to learn about it more was always a difficult feat to muster especially being alone. " At least you want to do it for work. " He replied suddenly felt a sense of guilt. " I'm just in it to broaden my knowledge about it. " He said managing to throw a word in-between her sentences.
" Ahh so you kept moving for your parent's work then? " He asked as he did his best to simply what she had said. Although not required, Silvia started to pour out her history which Calvin thought was very thoughtful of her to that he would grasp the full concept of why she kept changing schools. There was something that Silvia said that really stood out for him though. " Woah wait! " He said finally managing to break a sentence in. " You've got Veela in you?" The interest in her blood line made Calvin sit up and pay more attention to what she was saying. " You ain't gonna fire me up are yah?" he asked once again, carrying his thick Australian accent with him.
" I'd like to learn more spells if anything. " He simply responded confidently. " I know a few dark magic spells but nothing that harms someone permanently. " Of course, the theory of Dark Arts could only ever get him so far from the blue bells hex and a few other simple pain causing spells. " Surely there's more to it than just y'know, killing people and stuff. " He replied not that he was interested in killing anyone. It just felt nice to have someone he could talk to about it all.

Picking up on the shift in Calvin's mood, Silvia shook her head with a reassuring smile on her lips. "As long as you don't want to use Dark Magic to harm people, or dominate the world or something, it's fine to be interested in it. But it's been used as a weapon so often that people make the association automatically. Simply being curious about this subject shouldn't be judged as harshly as it is." Years of research that could improve magic altogether were probably being lost due to this prejudice against Dark Arts; Silvia didn't want Calvin to become discouraged just because he thought his motivation was not noble enough.
She nodded in response to his first question, confirming the reason for the multiple transfers. The following queries made her chuckle a little uncomfortably. "No, no, that's not how it works. You're fine. If you were one of the overly sensitive ones, we would have noticed already." This lack of awareness of how her innate magic manifested was what caused the whole fiasco at Hogwarts, so she felt the need to clarify. "It only amplifies the male's reaction to encountering a pretty female. Some become overly polite and dash to open doors. Some brag and lie about their achievements, aiming to impress. Some act extremely shy. But some are completely fine, either because they already have feelings for another girl, or are simply used to the company of attractive women. Or they just don't like blondes." A grin followed the last statement, showing that she was trying to make a joke of the whole Veela genetics thing.
As Calvin specified the area of Dark Arts he understood best, Silvia realized their knowledge probably overlapped quite a lot. She also knew certain offensive spells that could be called 'dark', but had not tried anything that could leave irrevocable damage. "I mostly know dueling spells, ones that have nasty effects but can be easily reversed. And a few curses that affect objects or animals..." Silvia trailed off, feeling a little uneasy talking about these 'evil' magics - even though they had already established that both of them were okay with the subject. She decided to let the boy ask for specifics if he wanted, but didn't volunteer any more details herself.

The thought of using dark magic to injure someone was not on the list for the Australian student. Instead, he found solace in the concept of learning a new branch of Magic. " I couldn't see my self injuring anyone just because I know dark magic. " He replied whilst closing his book and putting it into his backpack. " There's got to be more to dark magic than the prejudice of Dark Magic. " He added shrugging his shoulders.
" Ahh, is that how it works?" He responded not really sharing his honest thoughts. He only assumed from what he had learned that Veela's were capable of using fire and turning into some deranged creature capable of ripping out his throat. Surely Silvia wasn't like that. Was she? " So like, is this like a flick of a switch and the charm is on kinda thing?" He asked curiously wondering if she'd use something like this to her advantage in the games. " So if you were to use it now, how would I react? " He cautiously asked this hoping she wouldn't go ballistic on him. Calvin assumed this ability was similar to hypnosis in that she could make him cluck like a chicken or bark like a dog.
" Ahh, seeeeeeeeeeeeee! This is what I mean!" He said emphasising his words. Calvin was so passionate about learning this type of magic he would even give up his chance at the games just to learn more about dark magic. " This is what I want to learn about! The cursing, hexing and blood, guts and so on." Either he was heavily interested in the topic or just being a boy really. " I don't plan on using it on anyone let alone the people that don't like me. I'm just interested in learning it. " He further added as the thought of transferring to Hogwarts popped into his mind knowing that it would hinder him from ever actually using Dark Magic.

Silvia could only agree; Dark Arts was a vast area of magic, barred from exploration only because of widespread prejudice. She knew people like herself and Calvin could blaze a proverbial trail by delving into the subject while the society still balked at the idea.
Continuing to a lighter subject, she grinned at the terminology Calvin chose to define Veela magic. "No, it's not like a switch. The Charm is always on, I can't do anything about it. You're already reacting to me - and being completely normal, I think." Of course, it was difficult to tell if the Augustine champion's behaviour was somehow altered by her presence, because she didn't know him at all. "I'm just a quarter-Veela, though. My mom affects men more. And my grandmother is irresistible, it seems. She's a pure Veela, after all. Only, it's not pretty when she gets angry, because then her features turn all bird-like. It's terrifying, actually." Worried that Calvin might assume she was some harpy in disguise as well, Silvia hurried to add, "I don't, though. That's pure Veelas only." On the other hand, certain personality traits were inherited. Although she did notice that anger was easily provoked in her, that character flaw was something she worked to suppress.
Calvin's enthusiastic outburst about blood and guts had Silvia shaking her head in mock disapproval. "I thought you were all about defence... you almost fooled me!" She snickered, showing she was just kidding. "Yeah, I believe you. All those 'terrible' spells can also be used against creatures that aren't affected by pacifist magic."

Listening to how Silvia spoke about her Veela heritage made him only wonder more about the genetics of a Veela. Was it only as he read in the books? That they could turn bird like and shoot fire balls along with luring men to their deaths or was there more too it? " Ahh so you can only do a bit of it not like your family line? " He asked curiously and cautiously. He wondered if luring people to their deaths was actually part of it or if he was getting it mixed with the Muggle stories about Sirens.
" I don't see my self as the type to actually be using Dark Magic as of yet. " He responded with a delayed pause. " Well, maybe not as of yet. " His mind wondered about the curiosity of Dark Magic. " Do you think some dark wizards are capable of doing simple normal magic to the same extent as well, good wizards?" He had hoped he made sense with his question. " Like, can a Dark wizard perform better magic then a good wizard?" The ever curious Calvin shrugged his shoulders just before standing up and yawning.
" Wait, before you answer. Do you wanna take a little walk? I'm getting kinda lazy just sitting about. " He packed up his things and got himself ready by tying his own shoe lace but not before placing his book bag onto the floor. " It might be nice to do a little scenic walk anyway. "
