August 2025
Meredith stood on a platform in front of a floor length mirror, looking at her reflection with a sneer on her face. She was currently dressed in her new school uniform, all black robes from head to toe. Not her kind of look, at all. She’d been told that more colour would be added once she arrived at the school and was sorted, but this wasn’t a good start. Head tilted as she stared at the mirror, she watched her hair change from its normal white-blonde to a vivid magenta. Her sneer turned into a cheeky smile. Now that was better. Perhaps the black wouldn’t be so bad after all.
She tapped her foot impatiently as she waited for the shop owner to return to finish her robe fitting. She had only been in this country a few weeks so far, and already was getting ready to move out of her home to live at a new boarding school for the next four months. Meredith would never admit it openly, but she was nervous. Starting over at a new school had not been in her plans, not that she had much of a choice in the matter. She could only hope she would find her place and meet her people sooner rather than later.

Thalia had grown over three inches in the last year, which meant most of her robes were now too short. To her relief, Madam Malkin's was one of the last stops for this trip; although she liked Diagon Alley, today's visit was an annoying one. Dad was at home with baby Aurelius, but Mom decided to take Charlotte along. This proved to be a grave error, because the four-year-old quickly grew bored of waiting in different stores. She was currently throwing a tantrum outside the clothes' shop, and Thalia was allowed to go in alone while her mother looked for suitable entertainment.
For Thalia, shopping alone was preferable. She was almost twelve, and already the big sister of two siblings - why should she need adult supervision at a shop? Walking through the door confidently, she approached the counter. The owner was absent, but they must have heard the shopkeeper's bell tinkle and should arrive soon.
Turning to look around the shop, she belatedly noticed the other customer. The first thing to catch her eye was the bright magenta hair - the kind of colouring her parents would never allow her to even try out, let alone display in public. The girl sporting this enviable look seemed to be about eleven or twelve, too. This was so unfair. Still, Thalia's curiosity was piqued. "Hello there. Are you starting at Hogwarts this term?" She knew everyone in her current year and recognized a lot of the older students from the occasional shared classes. It meant the unfamiliar girl must be a first-year. "I'm Thalia Burke, second-year."

Meredith turned to look at the door when she heard it open with a soft tinkling of the bell. A girl who looked about her age came walking in, stopping by the counter to wait for the shopkeeper. Meredith watched her with inquisitive eyes, smiling quickly when the girl noticed her and introduced herself. Might as well talk to this girl, maybe she would have some useful information about the school. “Yeah, I just transferred from Salem. I’ll be starting in my second year, I think.” Meredith answered in her obvious american accent, stepping down from the platform and making her way over to Thalia.
“Meredith Morgan Fay, nice to meet you Thalia.” She extended her hand to shake in greeting. Her father always said a strong handshake was a good indicator of a person’s character. “So, what can you tell me about Hogwarts? Anything I should know before my first day?”

Starting as a second-year in a new school had to be a little intimidating. Everyone already had their friend groups, and those who didn't were probably just oddballs who wouldn't make good company for a new student. Thalia figured she should try acting as a guide to her new classmate. Perhaps even her new housemate?
She shook the girl's hand, endeavouring to do so firmly - like she had with Blaise - and while looking her new acquaintance in the eye confidently. "It's nice to meet you too, Meredith," she stated, her mind so intent on making a good first impression with the handshake that the middle and last names were registered and promptly went straight to the back of her mind.
"There's a lot to know about Hogwarts, but for your first day, it might just be relevant to not get sorted into Hufflepuff. It's the house with the least character," she counselled, remembering that even the Helga Hufflepuff claimed she was taking 'all the rest' - i.e. those who weren't brave, smart, or ambitious enough. "Or did you get privately sorted this summer?" The possibility struck her suddenly, and now she was worried that the magenta-haired girl was already a Hufflepuff and might take offence.
To diffuse the potential unpleasantness, she searched for another conversation topic. "Morgan Fay, as in Morgan le Fay? She's my favourite historical figure, I even named my cat after her." Was Fay a popular surname in the United States, or did Meredith's ancestors change theirs when moving to the New World - to honour the famous witch? Or maybe she was a Muggleborn and didn't even know Morgan had been a real person... Either way, that was an impressive moniker to have.

Meredith was impressed with the girl’s grip, endeavoring to tighten her grip just a bit in response before letting go. After all, she was not one to be outdone, even in something as silly as a simple handshake. “Is that so?” She asked in response to Thalia’s housing tip with a cock of her eyebrow. “No, I haven’t gone through any sorting yet. I’ve barely had time to unpack as it is.” She laughed, although the sound was a bit hollow. Her whole life seemed absurd at that moment. Moving to an unknown country, hours away from home. Starting at a new school mere weeks after arriving. She barely had time to catch her breath with everything changing around her.
“What house would you recommend?” Meredith wasn’t sure whether she would take this girl’s advice or not, but it would be interesting to hear nonetheless. She was also curious to learn more about these houses. She assumed due to the wording that it would involve their housing arrangements, but she was surprised to hear that such a thing would be determined by one’s lack of character, if Thalia were to be believed.
The topic of her famous ancestor made Meredith stand up a little straighter. “Yep, one and the same! My parents named me after her.” In what seemed like a flash, Meredith changed her features to better resemble the original Morgan Le Fay. Her hair lengthened and turned to a bright shade of red, her eyes changed to a bright blue instead of their typical pale gray-blue, and she even changed the shape of her nose and lips. “Don’t you see the family resemblance?” She asked with a small laugh, hoping to further impress Thalia with her special ability.

Being asked for advice made Thalia perk up. She was always glad to share her opinion and influence others - especially in matters as significant as one's house. "Slytherin is the best for ambitious and resourceful students," she asserted without a shred of self-doubt. "And Ravenclaw is great for intelligent and curious ones. Gryffindor is fine, too, if you like to recklessly dive into danger..." Despite three of her closest friends being in Gryffindor, Thalia couldn't bring herself to admire its defining values. Adventure was a great concept, and when she was smaller she used to get in trouble a lot for being bold at the wrong time. But she was growing out of it now, and experiences such as confronting a potentially evil adult witch no longer sounded like a desirable pastime. Even though the seven of them had succeeded, she still thought they could have simply told a professor. She couldn't just admit that to her friends, though, and so she kept such thoughts to herself... for the most part.
Meredith's claimed relation to arguably the most famous witch of all time was a lot to process. "That's an impressive lineage," Thalia managed, disregarding all her father's lectures on how a person's blood was unimportant. Surely coming from the same stock as Morgan le Fay was an exception to that rule!
It was almost too much when the other girl abruptly changed her appearance. The fact that it matched Morgan's look - or at least how she tended to be depicted - was not lost on Thalia, although she had no capacity to react to it just yet. Feeling a little overwhelmed, she spent a few moments just gaping at Meredith before realizing what was happening. "You're a Metamorphmagus! That's so rare! Does anyone else in your family have the ability?"

Meredith made a mental note about the two houses Thalia mentioned, Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Those were the most appealing for herself, although she had a slight leaning towards the latter. After all, how better to prove to her parents that she was intelligent, than to be sorted into a house known for their intelligence? Although Meredith had a suspicion that Thalia was in the Slytherin house from her wording. That was also an appealing idea. It would be nice to have a friendly face nearby if these houses were involved in their sleeping arrangements.
“How are these houses selected? Do they hand out some test to evaluate new students?” Meredith asked, already trying to figure out how to game the system so she could get in the house she desired. Surely Thalia could give her some inside knowledge to help ensure she ended up in a house suited to her status.
Particularly since Thalia now knew the importance of her family in regards to her heritage. Meredith smiled at her comment on her impressive lineage, pretending to act coy like it was no big deal. That fact, however, seemed to be quickly thwarted by her metamorphmagus skills. She was almost prouder of that fact, her smile widening at Thalia’s shocked response, since that accomplishment was all her own, instead of her family’s. “Nobody in our direct family that I know of,” Meredith answered with a shrug, changing her appearance back to her everyday look. Her parents may not give her ability much credence, after all she did not have to work for it, but she quite enjoyed the unique ability and the reception it received outside of her family.

"Oh, no, there is no test. They put an ancient sentient hat on your head and it sort of reads your mind to determine what your most defining values and qualities are. I hear you can ask for a specific house, too, though I didn't get a chance to - it declared me a Slytherin in a split second." That made her feel oddly pleased, even though some people claimed that making the Hat take longer to decide indicated a more well-rounded personality.
Another swift change in Meredith's appearance made Thalia even more curious about the ability. "Did you need to learn to control it? Does your appearance ever change when you don't want it to?" She had never known a Metamorphmagus personally before - except for the Beings Studies professor, who probably didn't count since she would never dare ask him about anything personal.
Only a few minutes ago, Thalia had been ignorant of the fact that the le Fay line still existed. Now, she was already becoming anxious about its continuation. So many pureblood families had died out during the last century - she couldn't help but feel a little upset about the loss of their legacy. Despite her father's repeated reminders that blood purity was not significant, she secretly felt proud that both her parents came from families listed in the Sacred Twenty-Eight. "Do you have brothers and sisters? How many Fays are there?"

Meredith smiled at the information about the sentient hat. So, they could request a specific house, huh? She had little concern that the hat would place her in the proper house, after all her superior intelligence and blood line were undeniable, but the fact that her opinion mattered did help quell the small worry she had about her own house result. She only hoped hers would be as decisive as Thalia’s obviously was.
“So how do these houses work exactly?” Meredith asked, hoping to understand more about her new school in preparation. “We didn’t have houses at Salem,” she explained. “Is it a literal house, like the name of your dormitory campus building?” She’d only been at her old school for one year, so it wasn’t like she had built a very strong connection to it, but all these changes were still a lot to take in for the twelve year old. The more she could find out ahead of time, the better she would be able to adapt to her new surroundings.
“It used to when I was a kid, but not so much anymore.” She recalled stories of her constant changing appearance driving her parents mad. A little girl with multi-coloured hair that they could not control simply didn’t fit into their image of a perfect family. “It still changes a bit with my emotions, but I’ve gotten pretty good at controlling it.” Without really thinking about it, she changed her hair colour to a blue and purple gradient with a smirk, as if to demonstrate her ease of control.
The topic of family quickly sobered Meredith from her attention high, her hair quickly changing back to its normal white. “Yeah, I do. One brother and three sisters. My two older sisters stayed behind in New York.” She stated this all matter-of-factly, not fully enjoying the attention moving to her siblings. She loved bragging about her family name and its reputation, but her own family? That was a different topic altogether.

Thalia had never paused to wonder why the Hogwarts houses were called that. It was something she grew up hearing, and it was so normal to her that upon hearing the word house out of context she was just as likely to imagine one of the four Hogwarts crests as she was to picture a building. "No, we don't have an entire building to ourselves - only common rooms. They're spacious, though. The Slytherin one is under the lake, and we can watch fish swimming by." When she was a first-year, some of the older students claimed that merpeople could also sometimes be seen; she had yet to spot one, however. "The Gryffindor and Ravenclaw ones are in separate towers... and the Hufflepuff one is in the basement. It probably has a terrible view, if any."
The ease with which Meredith shifted her appearance was awe-inspiring. A part of Thalia envied this ability. If she possessed it, her parents couldn't forbid her from dyeing her hair, they would have no control over it! She eyed the other girl's new colouring wistfully before moving to a new topic.
"How does your family deal with inheritance? Does your brother get everything, like in most Pureblood families?" That had been a major concern for Thalia since Aurelius was born, but her parents - both seeming rather amused - assured her that all three siblings would receive equal shares of the Burke wealth.
