August
Glad to avoid entering the 'bizarre and hazardous' Diagon Alley, Domhnall's parents dropped him off in front of the Leaky Cauldron. They would be shopping in Muggle London today, in search of a birthday present for Kyran - their undoubtedly favourite child. Oh, well. Maybe Don would get something for his older brother, too. Some colourful candy, for instance... with varying magical effects he could accidentally forget to mention. Kyran's perfect grades and prospects for his future career were all their parents wanted to talk about this summer, it seemed. Don barely managed to catch their attention long enough to get the Hogsmeade permission slip signed.
In hopes of making a good first impression, Don wore his best shirt - the red plaid one. He knew almost every Weasley was a Gryffindor, so he didn't feel like flaunting the Slytherin colours today. Blue jeans and black trainers completed the attire, making him blend in perfectly with the non-magical folk walking along the Charing Cross Road.
He entered the ancient pub and sought out a vacant table, feeling jittery with anticipation. The Weasley family would be arriving soon, and he would go shopping with them! Would he really get to meet George Weasley? What was the best way to express his immense respect for the inventor of all he held dear, without sounding like an infatuated fanboy? He'd had over a month to come up with that, and was still drawing a blank. Now he could only go with the flow - he was better at that than at planning, anyway.

Rose was positively bubbling with excitement. She was not an early morning person, but on that day she was one of the first of their large group ready for the outing. Practically her whole family was joining for the excursion. Typically it would just be her mum and step-dad, since they also needed to get school supplies for Ezra, but Rose had practically begged her dad to join so he could meet Don, and so that whole side of the family was joining as well. With multiple young children in tow, it took a little while for everyone to get ready to go, so they were running a bit behind. This was not unusual in the Weasley household, and usually Rose did not mind - partly because she was often one of the reasons they were running late - but on that day she was anxious to get going.
Ten minutes past the time she was supposed to meet Don, Rose was finally making her way towards the Leaky Cauldron, running ahead of her dad and step-mum who were trying to navigate the busy streets of Diagon Alley with a rambunctious five year old in tow. The rest of her family had split up to begin running their own errands, with the expectation that they would all meet up later for lunch. She practically ran into the building from the shopping street, eyes darting around to find her friend. She didn’t frequently use the Leaky Cauldron entrance, preferring to floo directly, but she knew Don’s parents were muggles, and so didn’t have another means to access Diagon Alley.
Spotting him sitting at a table, she waved her parents over to indicate she had found him, and practically hopped over. “Hi there stranger,” she greeted with a bright smile, cheeks flushed from the speed at which she had rushed over. “Sorry we’re late, Cole was being a bit crabby this morning,” she quickly explained, hoping he hadn’t been waiting too long. “You ready to get going?” Just as she asked that, her parents finally reached the table themselves. “Oh, right, Don, this is my dad, my step-mum, and my little brother Auberon,” she waved to each in turn, ruffling Auberon’s hair as she reached his introduction, earning herself a light swat and a show of his tongue. “And guys, this is Don.” She finished the introductions with a flourish and a smile. “The others are already shopping, but I’m sure you’ll meet them all later.”
George and Angelina laughed at their rambunctious daughter's quick introductions. "Nice to meet you Don," George said, stepping forward and extending his hand out to shake. "Rose has told us so much about you already. I hear you are quite the prankster?" He asked conspiratorially, a mischievous twinkle in his eye. Angelina rolled her eyes and swatted his arm playfully. "Did you parents mention what time they would be back to pick you up, dear?" Angelina asked kindly while trying to hold onto a tugging Auberon who was desperate to get back to the fun back where the shops were.

Don perked up at the sound of Rose's voice and stood up from his seat at once. It was odd to see her outside of school; somehow, the change in their surroundings made her look all different as well. Or maybe she had just changed over the summer. In any case, she was somehow prettier than he remembered - though not taller, since Don himself had grown considerably in the last few months.
While she was apologizing for her tardiness and explaining the reasons for it, he simply beamed with unconcealed happiness. "No worries, I'm glad you're finally here. Ready when you are!"
His nerves kicked back in when Rose started making introductions. The fourteen-year-old straightened up and just barely managed not to salute as he met George Weasley's eyes. Instead, he simply accepted the handshake and hoped his palm wasn't cold or sweaty. "Yes, sir! I do my best to keep my classmates from sinking into a dull routine."
Rose's step-mother was evidently the mature half of the couple. Although Don didn't want to think about the end of the shopping trip just yet, he was grateful that she asked. It always helped to have someone else aware of his schedule, as he tended to get carried away. "Two hours from now," he answered with a slight tone of disappointment. That gave him enough time to do the required shopping and briefly visit one or two extra stores, but it meant he wouldn't get to do everything he wanted.
The little boy, Auberion, seemed anxious to get going. Don could sympathize - he also wanted to leave the mostly-normal inn and enter Diagon Alley. "I have to restock on potion ingredients, should we go to the Apothecary first?" Potions was one of his least favourite classes, but he did enjoy playing around with some of the organic bits and pieces used in brewing. With a bit of creativity, they could be turned into acceptable low-budget pranking tools.

Rose was surprised at Don’s height when he stood up from the chair, not having realized how much he had grown while he’d been seated. It had only been a few months since she’d last seen him, but she swore he had grown at least a good 30 centimeters over the summer, if not more. He had always been taller than her, he was older after all, but his recent growth spurt made her realize how little she had grown. Sure she’d grown out her hair to shoulder length, so her curls were a bit more prominent, but she did not feel much different otherwise.
Regardless of his change in appearance, his personality seemed unchanged, and the two slipped back into their friendship as if they had just left Hogwarts a few days ago. She stood by a bit impatiently as her parents made their introductions, glad when finally Don suggested they start their shopping at the apothecary. With a quick glance over at her parents, who nodded in acceptance, Rose smiled at Don, “Alright then, let’s go!” She wasted no time turning back the way they came and heading back to Diagon Alley, looking back to make sure Don was following.
“You go on ahead, dear. We’ll catch up,” Angelina called after them, although Rose was already halfway out of the pub by then and barely registered her step-mother’s remark. Once they were back amongst the throngs of shoppers, Rose slowed her pace, letting Don catch up, and settled into a more relaxed walking stride. “So what have you been up to this summer?” While she had written a few letters to Don, she’d been wary about sending too many since his parents were muggles. She knew having too many owls coming and going from a muggle neighborhood could be a cause for concern in regards to the statute of secrecy, and so had limited her communication.
TAGGED: DOMHNALL MCEVOY Notes: that's what I was thinking as well. just wanted to give Don the chance to meet his idol lol
Post by DOMHNALL MCEVOY on Apr 12, 2024 21:20:30 GMT -5
Don wasted no time in joining Rose. Although he was still glowing with joy after meeting one of his idols, he was more at ease without the adults around. Once they exited the pub and stepped into its courtyard, he hurried to take out his wand and tap the correct brick in the wall that led to Diagon Alley. He had missed magic so much that even the simple act of opening the hidden archway gave him joy. Walking along the magic-filled shopping street made him feel right at home - more so than being at his parents' home did.
There was little to share about his summer. He tried to sound casual as he summarized his activities. "Not much, actually. My parents don't like hearing about magic, so there's nothing to talk about - except for my brother's newest achievements. And I can't really hang out with my old Muggle friends, unless I want to lie a bunch. I just spend time in my room, playing video games and hanging out with Pickles." His Pygmy Puff couldn't talk, but he was good company nonetheless. There was nobody else for him to spend time with, since Ronit - his favourite sister - had moved out to live with her boyfriend.
Don was far more interested in hearing how someone from a magical household spent the break. "What about you? Did you go anywhere interesting, or get to test out any new inventions?"

Rose felt a wave of sympathy as Don outlined his summer. It didn’t sound like he minded his summer plans, recalling it with a certain nonchalance, but she could only imagine how difficult it must be to hide a part of yourself from family and friends. She was quite lucky in the family department, it seemed, although she had only truly realized over the past few years through hearing about other people’s families. She had not realized her experience was not the norm for everybody.
She shrugged in response to Don’s question about her own summer, not wanting to delve into too much detail lest he think she was bragging. “Nothing too exciting. Been getting lots of Quidditch practice in. Slytherin team best be ready for some competition this year.” With a smirk, she playfully bumped his shoulder with her own, hoping to rile up his competitive side. Nothing better than some banter to lighten the mood. “And I’ve been helping out my dad in his shops a bit. No new inventions yet, but I think he’s working on something special.” She leaned in a bit, as if she was revealing some top secret information. “I’ve been hearing him tinker in his workshop late some nights. Last time I saw him like this, they came out with a whole new line of fireworks.” Rose had no actual proof that some big product was soon to be unveiled, but part of her enjoyed the mystery of it all. It was fun to speculate on what the Weasley twins were working on next.
Finally arriving at the apothecary, she made her way into the busy shop. It seemed they were not the only ones shopping for school supplies, as the store was unusually full of kids with their parents, going over lists to ensure nothing was missed. Not the most fond of Potions, Rose was not keen to stay long, and so quickly grabbed the few supplies she needed from the shelves before rejoining Don who was grabbing his own ingredients.
“You know, if you want, maybe you could come stay with us for a bit next summer?” Rose offered, still thinking about Don’s somewhat disappointing summer break. “My uncle Harry grew up in a muggle family that didn’t care for magic, so he used to spend a lot of time at my dad’s and step-dad’s over the summer break. I’m sure you’d be more than welcome to do the same. If you want, I mean.” She turned away at the last part, hiding the slight red tinge to her cheeks. She worried Don would be offended by the invitation, or think she was being too forward. She didn’t want to insinuate anything about his family, especially considering she didn’t know them, but she also loved the idea of spending more time with her friend over the summer months.

The Quidditch banter immediately brought a grin to Don's face. Well, that and the brush of Rose's shoulder against his. "Slytherin team's always ready for competition - bring it on," was the automatic response. He only hoped Tynan would not play as aggressively against Rose as he did against older students - kicking and punching and outright trying to knock opponents off their brooms. He'd seen no issues with this playstyle before, but now it suddenly seemed problematic. Perhaps he should bring it up during the next team practice.
Any new inventions that came from Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes were bound to be dazzling. Possibly expensive, too, although Don already had a plan for earning some Galleons this term. The Hogsmeade permission slip would finally enable him to peddle various goods to younger students. "Have you ever tried to sneak into his workshop to see what's happening?" That could be somewhat hazardous, he supposed, if magical experiments were taking place there. Still, he didn't know of any Weasley products ever being recalled due to flaws, nor had he heard of mishaps that would have led to customers getting injured - the men clearly knew what they were doing and did not endanger themselves or others too much.
Though not the most exciting of shops, the Apothecary still had its charm. The various nasty bits floating in jars always intrigued Don, and the section for live ingredients was morbidly attractive with its various many-legged and legless offerings. Magical joke items were undeniably superior to what Muggles came up with, but one should never underestimate the pranking power of a well-placed spider. He bought the required supplies and a few extras that possessed entertainment potential.
Rose's invitation caught him off guard. He hadn't been to any wizarding household yet, not even a small one hidden in a Muggle neighbourhood. The Weasley home had to be exceptionally magical, given the amount of inhabitants. He tried not to get overly excited at the idea of spending a part of his summer surrounded by other wizarding folk, some of whom were quite famous. Even more enticing was the thought of getting to see how Rose lived, and spending time with her uninterrupted by academic routine. He noted the pink flush in her cheeks and was certain his own face was currently coloured in a similar shade. "That would be amazing-- if your parents are really fine with it, of course." He didn't want to sound as though the plan was already confirmed and he expected Rose to go through with it. Adults didn't always consider their children's personal wishes when making vacation plans. "I know my own parents won't mind - I feel like they're worried I'll cause some accident at home, even though I haven't done accidental magic since I started going to Hogwarts." He was blabbering now, trying to wash the inexplicable embarrassment away with a stream of words.

Rose’s lips turned upwards into a smirk at the mention of sneaking into her dad’s workshop. She quickly glanced around to make sure her parents were not within earshot, but it seemed they were still further back in the crowd since she couldn’t see them. She still leaned closer to Don, just in case someone were to overhear the conversation. “When I was younger, I found a way to get onto the roof from my bedroom. From there I can reach a window that looks into the workshop,” she whispered, giving him a look as if to say not to tell anybody, before moving away. “I’m not technically allowed in, but he never said I can’t look in.” Rose loved little loopholes like that, ways to skirt around the rules without technically getting into trouble. “But I still haven’t seen anything yet,” she finished with a deep sigh. “Whatever he’s working on, he’s really keeping it under wraps.” With the school year starting soon, her investigation would soon have to end. Unfortunately she would probably have to wait along with everybody else to find out the latest WWW product.
She was glad that Don was as excited as she was about the prospect of spending some time at her place the following summer. It would be so much more fun to practice Quidditch with somebody else. Since Andy had graduated, he’d been too busy to spend much time with her, and most of her other siblings were either too young or not interested. Her worries quickly quelled, her bright grin returned. “Brilliant! I’ll ask my mum and step-dad when we meet up for lunch. I live there most of the summer, but we could always visit my dad’s for a bit too if you want.” Rose was not too concerned about her parents’ permission. One additional child in the house would barely be noticeable, and surely they would love to give Don a reprieve like uncle Harry had growing up.
“So, where to next?” Rose asked after they had both grabbed their supplies and exited the Apothecary. “Maybe Flourish and Blotts? I need to pick up some books for my new classes this year.” Rose’s voice raised in excitement, looking forward to her new electives that year, particularly Advanced Flying. She knew it would be more work with three additional classes, but she hoped the subjects would be more exciting than some of her normal classes. “Unless you need to get your robes adjusted at Madam Malkin’s first?” She punctuated this question by looking him up and down, still surprised how much he had grown in only a few short months.
