End of September 2025
Five minutes before the start of class, Lilith opened the door to the charms room. Five minutes of whispers, giggling, and the occasional wave of panic were all she could take in the morning. Any longer and Lilith would have needed to explain why an entire class of students had put their house hourglasses into negatives. For some reason being annoying was not considered a good enough reason to take points away.
Not doing their homework, however, was. She enjoyed it when they forgot. Their little panicked faces entertained her for an entire minute, and she had fewer scrolls to mark. It really was win-win, for her.
“Please place your homework into the collection tray, and take your seats. You shouldn’t need your quills today. Leave them in your bags, and place your wands on your desk.” She liked being able to see their wands. They were less likely to cause trouble that way.
“As you should know from your homework, first years will be practicing Incendio, the fire-making spell. Second and third years, you will be practicing Fumus Purgarus, the smoke-clearing spell.” Teaching anything involving fire was risky. There was always one little fire-obsessed demon just waiting to show off. She only hoped they hurt themselves and not another student. Fire was enjoyable, paperwork was not.
“First years, why might you need the fire-making spell? Second and thirds, when might you need the smoke-clearing spell?”
Were they going to blow smoke around the classroom? Was that safe? Breathing in smoke sounded unpleasant, and probably very bad for her lungs.
She’d much rather light something on fire than use her wand like an electric fan.
Trying to look at the positives, Insuk made a mental list of ways the charm could be used. Fumus Purgarus was used by rescue workers all over the magical world. She’d seen it used a total of one time. Her dad used it on a camping trip when their campfire had been more smoke than fire. She remembered thinking how silly it was for him to use magic when they’d had a fan in the tent that could have done the same thing. She still felt that way… but unless someone threatened to burn her science books, she would never ever say that out loud. Not with Professor Channing in hearing distance.
Noah pulled a crumbled scroll of parchment from his bag, hoping it was his homework. He knew he’d done it, if only because he wanted to make a fire. Levitating a feather had been fun. Fire sounded better.
Flattening the parchment, he put it in the tray and sat down. He was glad he wouldn’t need a quill today because he wasn’t sure he knew where his were. He’d been sent new ones, plus some ballpoint pens Ms. Burke thought he’d need. He couldn’t remember if he’d put them in his bag. Expecting him to do his homework AND remember where he left the quills was expecting too much.
“If I want to eat marshmallows, I can use the charm to make a campfire.” Now, he really wanted marshmallows.

Dustin was very glad that he had remembered the homework, looking relieved as he pulled it out of his school bag. It felt good to be able to place it in the collection tray before scurrying back to his seat to not be in the way. Charms was a great class even if Professor Channing could be a bit intimidating. So long as one did as they were told, though, there was hardly any real reason to worry, right? Uncertainly he raised his hand as they were asked a question and gulped a little when called upon to answer. "The smoke-clearing spell could be really useful in a situation where a fire has spread through a house or something and you need to get out without breathing in the smoke."

Romy was definitely afraid of Professor Channing, even though she thought the fear would go away as she advanced through her years at Hogwarts. The one positive change she did succeed in making was that she managed to use her fear to work hard in Charms. Her homework was always done on time, and she placed her scroll in the collection tray as usual before taking her seat and setting her wand down on the desk. Her practical work was unfortunately not as consistently good as her written work, so she hoped to make progress in today’s class.
“Professor, smoke is sometimes created not from fire but on purpose, for example for special effect - I mean, um, some people create smoke to hide behind it, and we can use the smoke-clearing spell to clear the obstacle.” The Hufflepuff put her hand down quickly after she finished speaking.

So far, no homework assignment had proven too challenging for Olivia. She enjoyed academic tasks and often turned in essays that were much longer than professors required. However, even if her studies hadn't been so satisfying, Charms would not be a class she would dare skimping. Professor Channing was probably the most intimidating adult in the whole castle - who could be so bovine as to neglect preparing for her class? Some of Olivia's classmates, apparently. Not all people possessed a self-preservation instinct. Admittedly, it occasionally amused her to see the other kids squirming under the woman's gaze as they stammered out excuses for not having any homework to turn in. Watching others fail was sometimes almost as fun as knowing others watched her succeed.
Among her favourite activities was answering questions in class to demonstrate her superior knowledge. Still, she felt self-conscious when speaking in front of Professor Channing. Another first-year responded while the Slytherin was still debating whether she should show off or keep her head down. His example for a use of the Fire-Making Spell was oddly specific - why marshmallows? Now she really had to speak, especially since she knew her answer would be way better. "The Fire-Making spell can also be used for self-defence - it should be especially effective against Devil's Snare and Inferi." The books on Dark Arts she had found in her parents' library had provided Olivia with information a lot of her peers seemed to lack. She could bet none of them would have thought of Inferi. Ha! She was so far ahead of them - especially the Muggleborns, who were still blundering around in the world they did not belong in.

Lilith always had enough patience for one or two stupid answers. Of course one of them had come from an orphan brat. It was a shame that an orphanage in the magical world had allowed him to be so… muggle. Its owner, that sickeningly kind muggleborn Hufflepuff was to blame no doubt. Expecting any of her children to be more magical than muggle was wishful thinking.
“Excellent, some of you have offered some useful answers. The fire-making charm can be used for a … campfire, but as Miss Mulciber said, it can be used for defense against opponents weak to fire.” Including other wizards. Telling students to use it on their dueling rivals was frowned on, but it was always an option for those who didn’t care about hurting their opponent. In a real battle, hurting the other person was the whole point.
“Mr. Burke is also correct. If you are ever trapped in a fire, the smoke-clearing charm can clear the air to help you breathe and find the exit. It can also, as Miss Bryce said, clear smoke created as a distraction. You will likely put this into practice during your more advanced defense against the dark arts classes, but it is good knowledge to have.” She didn’t know what they taught in that class; however, not teaching them distraction tactics was simply unthinkable to her.
“You may practice with a partner. There are candles to practice on. For those worried about setting their tables on fire, there are cauldrons for you on the back table. You can start with them and make your way to the candle. Having a contained area for you to practice, might make you feel a little more confident.” She hoped the Gryffindor boy and his marshmallows used a cauldron. She didn’t trust him not to burn everything around him.
“Second and third years, each of you will need one of these clear boxes to practice with. She tapped the boxes sitting on her desk. Some of you might recognize them, they are the same boxes we used when we learned fumus, the smoke charm, last class. Use fumus to fill the box with smoke. Then use fumus purgarus to clear the smoke from the box. Try to keep the smoke inside your box, we don't want the classroom to fill with smoke.” A smoke-filled classroom would make it harder to watch the first years.
"Once you're ready, please begin. I will be watching to make sure everything is under control."

Blaise had finished the homework, but only just, and it wasn't very good. But at least it was done! He put it at the front in the tray like Channing said, but he tried to do so quickly so he wouldn't have to be close to her any longer than was needed. Then maybe she wouldn't think to say something to him. He liked to avoid one on ones with her whenever possible.
He took a seat with Dustin, but today unfortunately was a solo practice. They would be working on the smoke-clearing charm. Blaise grumbled that he had to get up to the front again to grab the box but he did so anyway. There wasn't really a choice. And then he would have to work on the smoke charm first of all, which he wasn't too great at.
He grabbed the box and hurried back to his desk. When he did, he reached down to his backpack to get out his wand. He forgot to earlier, but didn't want to when the professor was teaching because Channing would have probably made a big deal out of him disrupting or something.
But now he was fumbling around in his bag and couldn't find it! He picked his bag up and put it on his desk so he could look through it more thoroughly but it really wasn't there! Uh oh...

It hadn’t taken long for Lillian to learn not to mess around in Charms class. Not that she would necessarily, but after seeing Professor Channing’s reaction to some of her more rambunctious classmates, Lillian made sure not to get on the professor’s bad side. After placing her homework in the tray, she took a seat and tried to make herself as invisible as possible, not wanting to draw any kind of attention to herself. She’d always hated being the center of attention, so answering a professor’s questions in class was not appealing to her in the least, but particularly in Charms she decided to keep her mouth shut.
Once the theoretical portion of the class was complete, she rose along with her classmates to grab her supplies at the back of the class, making sure to grab a cauldron in addition to the candle. She absolutely did not want any incident if she was to be messing around with fire. On her way back to her own desk, she noticed Blaise frantically digging through his bag at his seat. “Hey, is everything okay?” She asked as she paused next to him, speaking softly in almost a whisper so as not to disturb other classmates.

Having a professor express approval of her answer was always pleasing, but it was almost thrilling when the professor was Channing. Paying close attention to the woman's response, Olivia noted the use of certain words and the timing of pauses. It almost sounded as though she found the Gryffindor boy's answer to be inane... or was it just wishful thinking on Olivia's part, because that was how she felt about the whole marshmallow idea?
She glanced at Beaton when partnering up was mentioned. It could be amusing to see him at work from up close, but if he set something on fire she could be reprimanded as well - for not helping him out or something. Or, if he was really terrible, she could even get hurt. Safer to work alone.
Deciding to skip the precaution of using a cauldron, Olivia pulled a candle closer. Normally, she would be bold with her spellcasting; in Channing's class, however, she did not want anything going awry - at least not for herself. Pointing the tip of her wand at the wick and endeavouring to cast carefully, she muttered, "Incendio." Only a few sparks shot out; she had been too careful. The first-year tried again, this time aiming for a slightly stronger effect. "Incendio." A muted little flame flickered into life at the tip of her wand and lit the candle wick. There, that wasn't so difficult... only now she wanted to try producing a stronger flame - as strong as she could.
Romy breathed a sigh of relief when Professor Channing acknowledged her answer positively. As soon as they were allowed to begin, she grabbed one of the clear boxes from the desk in front. She felt pretty confident about using Fumus after the previous class, and cleared her throat before saying the incantation with her wand directed at the interior of the box. The box filled with smoke on the first try, much to her delight, but she realised that to keep the smoke contained inside she had to successfully use Fumus Purgarus to clear it before it leaked out.
“Uh, alright… Fumus Purgarus! Fumus Purgarus!” she repeated, maintaining the grip on her wand. The smoke cleared somewhat and the box regained some of its transparency, but her spell did not work to its full potential. REALLY not wanting to anger the professor, the fourteen-year-old hastily put the lid over the half-smoky box. She decided to hone her concentration some more before resuming work on real smoke.
