What her mother approved and disapproved of was too complicated to describe in less than a half-hour long monologue. As a Durmstrang alumna, the woman had experience with Dark Arts and was not as close-minded as most people regarding the subject. What she seemed to be worried about was that Maeve was too open-minded about it. "Not... really. She just thought I was easily tempted and could turn bad very quickly. Dark magics weren't a taboo to her but she suspected I might like them just a little too much." That wasn't a wrong assumption in itself, although such suffocating control only served to increase the teenage girl's interest instead of quelling it.
As the suggestion to try out the Unforgivable trio came up, Maeve felt a mental equivalent of vertigo. Her role as the teacher was being swapped with Niklas' role as a student. She wasn't completely sure she liked it but the opportunity was just too good to turn down. "We can try them, yes. I'm intrigued to observe the effects." Only, what could they practice on? Not each other. Even the physically harmless Imperio did not sound like a spell she wanted to experience herself. They needed something alive for it. Small. Insignificant. Not cute and fluffy, which could prevent the willingness to cause harm, but repelling... and many-legged?
"Do you think we could find some spiders here, to... work with?" They were abundant everywhere in the castle, it shouldn't take long to discover some.

"Magic is only as dark as one's intent." That was not just what he had been taught, its what he honestly believed. For him he had intent. He wanted to hurt the people who kept hurting him. To get strong enough that he was no longer afraid. And most importantly he wanted to one day for people to respect him, even if he could not be liked then he would definitely be feared. Right now that was the best he could hope for in a long string of being unaccepted.
"I can show you them." Niklas immediately offered, since she already knew he had tried them it was pointless to pretend he had not excelled in two of the three. Imperio was still hard but he had managed it for very short periods of time, as long as he was not distracted he might be able to do so here too. If she wanted a demonstration he was also fairly willing to do so since she was helping him learn spells he had been struggling with for six years.
"I am sure we can, the castle is full of them so it should take no effort to find a few." In fact there were likely some in the very room they could use, either that or the room would conjure them for them. He wasn't entirely sure if it worked that way. Still he grabbed a container and moved to search the crevices until he could find fairly good size ones. It might be easier to see if they enlarged some but, hey, they now had test subjects. He came over with four common spiders in a jar and held it up. "We might need only one, the killing curse can be done last. But in case we wished to practice more I found more than that."

Seeing as Niklas was on the task of collecting spiders, Maeve found herself lacking a purpose. She wandered over to the potioneering section of the room to check the ingredient shelves and drawers. There could be living things there, various bugs and insects were sometimes added to concoctions so fresh they were still squirming. But, she supposed, the Room couldn't conjure living things, it only created rudimentary items - and possibly brought forth those that were left here by other visitors. And there was no way a jar of, say, centipedes would sustain life for long, if not provided with nutrition. Her search was futile in regards to discovering any creatures usable for their upcoming experiment but she was satisfied with the variety and rarity of the ingredients present. This space could certainly be used to try out some more dangerous potions.
Once her companion returned from his quest, Maeve gave the four spiders an evaluating look. "These will do, yes. I think I can enlarge them, for better visibility." She reached into the jar and carefully fished out one unlucky arachnid. Holding it was an unpleasant enough feeling to nearly force a shiver out of her but she suppressed it. She had worked with far nastier items while brewing... only most of those were dead or at least much slower than this spider. "Engorgio." It swelled in size, becoming about as large as a tarantula. The attempt to run away continued, it spiraled around her arm trying to find a way to climb down. And now, having gained mass, its feet caused a tactile sensation Maeve did not particularly enjoy. She walked over to the nearest table, shook the spider off on it and quickly pointed her wand at it. "Impedimenta." The eight-legged creature's scramble to the edge of the table was put into slow motion. The redhead breathed out in relief; she was somewhat worried the spell might kill it. Still, it needed to be slowed or aiming would be too difficult.
"Okay, whenever you're ready." She motioned to Niklas, encouraging him to begin the demonstration. For safety reasons, Maeve herself stepped further away from the table and made sure to keep out of the line of fire.

"Okay." Holding the jar for her to get one of the spiders was easy enough, just as much as letting her enlarge the spiders. Being able to see if their spells had effect would be good. After all Imperio was tough to tell on small creatures so enhancing their size would be very helpful in being sure they were being effective. The spider got very large under her spell and tried to scramble away until she slowed down its progress. That was good because having a more stationary target helped.
"Imperio." Niklas had lifted his wand and pointed it at the spider, the spell making it still completely. He had decided to start with the hardest spell of the three. Thus far he had only limited success with it despite hours of practice before he had started practicing with Maeve. Brows furrowed tightly he kept his eyes on the spider to make it move. He had it flipping backwards, slowly, and making a star shape on the table. Simple things to see it in action before he released his control.
"Crucio." This one came out strong, the red light hitting the spider and causing it to flail and writhe on the table top. There didn't seem to be an ounce of hesitation or empathy for the spider as he let the spell linger. Perhaps longer than he strictly needed to. As the spell ended the spider shuddered in place, not seeming to have the ability to move as it recovered from it. Niklas was breathing slow and steady, as if working through anxiety.
"Avada Kedavra." Whatever he had been feeling was pushed away as the green light struck the spider squarely. The spider stopped moving and he lowered his want now that he had displayed each one, each one showing that he was stronger here in Dark Arts than any other branch of magic. Looking to Maeve he wondered if it bothered her despite the nature of their training here. "Would you like to try now? I can enlarge and stun one of the spiders for you if you would like."

Watching Niklas perform the three spells was morbidly captivating. She could tell he had practised them numerous times - there was no hesitation in pronouncing the incantations and moving the wand, no recoiling from the sight of the suffering spider. Maeve herself, though not especially fond of arachnids, felt slightly uneasy watching one being tormented. It wasn't exactly sympathy for the creature, however; her mind kept fretfully wondering what it might feel like to be subjected to these spells. Well, there wouldn't be much to feel with the last one, at least.
"That was an impressive demonstration." And it truly had been - she was amazed that Niklas found the time and courage to learn these spells on his own.
Her overstimulated brain was attempting to come up with reasons to reject the offer of trying out the spells for herself. What if her wand was ever checked? But then, who would check it now that her overbearing mother was not there to control her? And it wasn't illegal to torture and kill a spider, not even with this sort of magic. There would be no better place or time for learning it than now. After this brief consideration, she nodded. "Yes, please, that would be great."
While waiting for a fresh new spider to be prepared for a painful execution, she kept glancing at the one that was already dead. Would she even be able to perform such a feat on her first try? Maeve's trepidation mostly stemmed from the unsavoury nature of these three curses, but a big part of it was also her fear of failure. She readied her wand, deciding to first attempt the spell she was the least confident about.
Carefully aiming at the spider Niklas enlarged and immobilized, Maeve uttered the incantation. "Crucio." The long legs began twitching. The arachnid clearly felt some sort of discomfort, but it was not flailing in agony like the one Niklas had targeted. It stopped rather quickly, too. That was a subpar performance, she knew, but somehow she didn't feel like giving it another go. Instead, she moved on to the next part.
"Imperio." The sensation that coursed down her arm was strange, momentarily making her wonder if she somehow managed to make this spell backfire. But no, she could feel that the spider would obey her, and the tingling in her palm almost felt like the brush of strings she could pull - but mentally rather than physically. Focusing, she commanded the arachnid to circle its dead comrade and watched it do so at a sluggish pace, as if it was struggling to synchronize all of its legs. Perhaps it was fighting the curse, if such creatures even had the capacity for it.
Preparing for the last bit wasn't easy. She watched the spider complete its circle and return to the spot it had started at, and tried to muster any hatred or disgust for it. "Avada Kedavra." Nothing happened. Not a single green spark came out of her wand. Her target was slowly moving to the edge of the table now, unbidden, possibly freed from the Imperius Curse due to the shift in Maeve's concentration. Ignoring this escape attempt, she rummaged in her thoughts for something that could induce a sense of loathing and a desire to cause harm. A few faces she despised surfaced in her mind, not-so-distant memories bringing about the emotion she was seeking. "Avada Kedavra." The emerald flash hit her target, pushing it back to the center of the table. There was no more movement from the spider, as it now lay on its back with the numerous limbs drawn close to its body.
"Is it more difficult with bigger creatures?" she asked, anxious to fill the silence as casually as possible.

"Oh, um, thank you." Impressive? Niklas had never been told he was impressive at anything. Maybe he had truly found the magic that he was actually good at? In all six year of school thus far he hadn't found himself good at anything but messing up. Even with flying or more physical subjects like Potions and Herbology. Nothing had come easily to him and even after years of learning he hadn't been able to figure out why nothing worked.
It felt good to know, finally, what sort of magic he was good at. A dark twist in his chest came with this knowledge. If this was the sort of magic he was best at then nothing taught here in school would ever be right for him. It was to late to transfer to Durmstrang if his father even allowed it. His father. Thoughts twined their way through his brain as he stepped back away from the spider, not sharing what he was thinking in this moment. He might not be very bright at times but even he knew when to keep silent.
"Imperio, yes. At least I have found it to be so, perhaps it has to do with the level of intelligence. Crucio and Avada Kedavra both seem to rely more on hatred from within." Something he had in spades and let it out in this manner with devastating effects. The Killing Curse, too, seemed to follow the logic of needing an intense hatred or at the very least a lot of intent. "...if you wish we could always attempt these spells on...larger creatures as well if you would like."
