"Oh no no no, please don't die on me," Don was begging as he furiously poured handfuls of soil into a pot that held half of his Mimbulus Mimbletonia. Nearby, another pot housed the other half - the mother plant. Both pieces were currently oozing smelly liquid and deflating quickly.
After learning that plants could be propagated with cuttings, he tried to make a clone of his precious stinksap source by snipping it in two with scissors. Only, it didn't seem to be working at all like he expected, and now everything around him - and on him, as his clothes got sprayed generously - was a reeking mess.
"Hang on, little one, you'll be alright..." He hoped the words soothed the plant in its evident anguish. Domhnall could have used some soothing himself. And a good hosing down.

Lia skipped into the greenhouse, looking forward to caring for her little boil-covered plant. While she’d found it repulsive upon first glance, she had now grown fond of her Mimbulus Mimbletonis, hoping to keep it alive until she could transplant it to her grandmother’s garden during the summer break.
It was there she stumbled upon a tragic scene, with an even worse odour. She recoiled slightly, debating leaving until the smell dissipated, until she noticed the disheartened Slytherin hunched over his own withering plant. Lia moved closer, feeling sympathy for the boy furiously trying to save his dying plant. “You okay?” she asked tentatively, before finally seeing the full carnage of the mangled plants in front of him. She frowned, “Oh no… what happened to it?”

Intent on covering the oozing plant in soil in hopes of staunching its massive wound, Don didn't realize someone else had joined him in the greenhouse. Not until the new arrival spoke, making the boy jump and look up guiltily, his hands finally ceasing their furious soil shoveling. He was glad it was Lia and not some Prefect, or worse - Willow, who had taken care of the plant up to this point.
"I'm... I'm not, no, thanks for asking," he admitted quite honestly. "I tried to divide it, you know, to have two plants. But I must have cut something vital..." The second year's knowledge of plant anatomy - or botany in general - was essencially non-existent. Even more so when it came to magical flora. He had, in fact, no clue what was vital inside a plant. "Is... is it possible to save it still, d'you reckon?"

Lia shook her head sadly as she looked down at Don’s half dead plant. “I’m sorry, I think it’s too far gone.” She hated to tell him this, as he seemed so gutted, but unfortunately she couldn’t see a way to remedy this situation. Maybe if she knew more advanced spells there was some kind of charm that would reattach the two sections of the plant, but Lia was at a loss if such a spell even existed.
She suddenly thought of a solution, inspired by the very cause of his problem. “But maybe we can take a piece off my plant and grow you a new one?” She proposed, her voice rising in excitement at the prospect. She quickly grabbed her own plant from another workstation and brought it back to sit next to Don’s two mangled ones, looking expectantly for his go ahead.

Hearing Lia's answer crushed the last bit of hope Don had. It wasn't a large bit - he had eyes and could see his baby plant was dying; the second opinion merely confirmed it. He let out a long, dramatic and somewhat shaky sigh. "Yeah... yeah, it is. Gone. Perhaps it's in a better place now." One without its owner attacking it with scissors. He wouldn't have harboured such spiritual hopes for mundane plants but magical ones just seemed more... alive.
He brushed some of the soil off himself, not venturing to touch any of the stinksap that was still on him, and was about to rise to his feet when the Hufflepuff girl made her suggestion. Don let out a high-pitched sound of joy. "You really mean it? I'd be so, SO grateful!" His eyes, glinting with emotion, turned to the Mimbulus Mimbletonia in her hands.

Lia was glad when her suggestion seemed to pick up his spirits. “Yeah, of course!” She responded in kind, happy her solution was being well received. “I can show you how it’s done, so once yours grows back to full size, you can propagate it yourself.” It was clear what Don had wanted to do with his plant, but unfortunately he had gone about it the wrong way.
As her grandmother had a particularly green thumb, Lia had been taught from a young age how to care for plants, thus was happy to be able to share her knowledge. For once she felt knowledgeable, and not like a fraud, as was the case in most of her classes. “First you’ll need a new pot and fresh dirt,” Lia instructed, and waited for Don to return before continuing. If he wanted to learn, she’d have to show him the whole process.

"Sure, makes sense, I'll be right back!" His eagerness to work with plants (or at least this specific plant) rekindled, Don scrambled to fetch the required items. The sack of dirt he used in the initial replanting attempt was still mostly full, so all he needed was a pot unmarred by stinksap. He brought one over and placed it on the wooden surface next to Lia's Mimbulus Mimbletonia. To make the work space easier to use, he even moved the two other pots aside - he would deal with the dearly departed later.
"Okay, what's next?" Don had a vague idea about how the process should go, having seen it done by others and just attempted it himself. Following step-by-step instructions seemed like a safe way to go about it, though - he did not want anything going wrong, especially anything that could harm Lia's own plant.

Don made quick work getting the supplies and returning to their workstation. “Fill up the pot with dirt about three quarters of the way up,” Lia instructed before turning back to her plant. Her nerves suddenly flared up. She’d done this with plants in her grandmother’s garden, but never on her own, and definitely never with magical plants. What if she screwed up? She’d just embarrass herself in front of the older Slytherin.
No. She could do this. She took a deep breath and squashed down the self-doubt. Grabbing a pair of shears from the workstation, she rotated the plant looking for the best place to cut. “To propagate a plant,” she started explaining to Don, “you need to use a small cutting from the stem, or an offshoot.” She finally located a nodule protruding from her plant that she determined would be perfect, and snipped it off.

The second-year busied himself with the fulfillment of Lia's instructions. He did his best not to spill too much soil on the ground as he took handfuls of it and gradually got three-quarters of the pot full. At least, it looked like three-quarters to him - it wasn't that easy to estimate, as the pot was wider at the rim than at the base.
Once that was done, he watched the Hufflepuff girl prepare for plant surgery. She looked just a bit nervous, but he had to admire her determination to follow through with the idea - especially after seeing what could happen if something went wrong. "Oh, you're really good at this stuff," he observed, after letting out a sigh of relief - they didn't get sprayed with the stinksap, and Lia's plant seemed to be just fine. "Do I need to water the soil before or after putting the plant in?" He didn't dare to attempt a single step without receiving affirmation - killing his second Mimbulus Mimbletonia would be utterly devastating.
