END OF SUMMER 2024 (a random cafe in London)
Summer was almost over. Not that it mattered. She was no longer a student. She was a grown-up. It meant more work but loads more money and fewer rules. Still, summers used to be a lot more fun. Her mother forced her to do her muggle homework, but she didn’t have to go to regular classes, and she could watch TV.
As a grown-up her work kept her busy, she just always had homework. Fun homework, but it was still homework. Dragons were just as dangerous and exciting as she always thought. There were still so many unknowns and so many new things to learn. It was exhausting and thrilling – something she would never ever tell her former Hogwarts professors.
Her notebook in front of her was filled with drawings and notes about her newest dragons. Muggles would see notes on large reptiles, but magical people would see the truth.

Gem hadn't been sure what his plan was for the day when he'd left the house. Uly was off doing team captain things, but Gem didn't have to be at the pitch for awhile. So he thought he'd try something different. He had picked a random cafe out of the blue to try going to. That's what people did, right? They went to cafes?
It'd been forever since he felt like just a regular person. So standing around, he ordered something and then tried shuffling to a table. Except as he moved, he spotted someone that had something that looked an awful lot like dragons on paper. He wasn't normally nosey but he couldn't help himself.
"You know, if you're wanting to study them there are reserves." Hopefully that didn't come off as mean or anything. He'd always been curious about the dragon reserves.

Hymn's attention perked up when he heard the mention of reserves. "Like the dragon, unicorn and hippogriff ones? I've worked extensively at the dragon one in Romania," Hymn said as he came over to the pair. Normally, he didn't bother with other people but he especially loved dragons.

"Been there and done that. These are just my research notes." She looked down at the notebooks and papers on the table. "It kind of looks like a library threw up here, doesn't it?" She laughed. If only her mother could see just how much work she did for her job. Her mum still didn't fully understand that dragons were real, or that her daughter spent most of her days dodging fireballs and claws. "You're looking at one of the perks of being a dragonologist. It's not all wings and fire." Her first-year self would have been horrified if she'd known.
"Do you two want to join me?" She'd never been shy, and talking to people who weren't fifty years old or covered in dragon dung was a rare occurrence. If she wasn't on the reserves she was in the field and her seniors were not the most exciting people.
