End of May
It had been difficult to find enough free time for duelling practice. The amount of classes Maeve was taking kept her buried in homework, Quidditch practice sessions took multiple hours out of every week, and the duelling club needed her organising and supervising it - but not participating. It was a relief when the Quidditch season finally ended. Slytherin won, and team practices were no longer needed for this school year. She could use that free time for herself.
The duelling tower was empty when she arrived, late after the day's lessons were over. That meant she could use some flamboyant magics and not risk injuring anyone. After placing her bag near the wall and casting a protective charm on it, the redhead walked over to the row of dummies. She selected one, aimed her wand and cast one of the spells she had been itching to try out. "Confringo!" A splintery explosion followed, and one of the dummy's arms clattered to the floor.

Must do better, will try harder. The thought raced through his mind constantly as the silver haired Ravenclaw made his way through the multiple staircases, corridors, classrooms and people at Hogwarts. Levi was commonly known as the Silver Fox at Hogwarts and was known to be constantly smiling at everyone he encountered even if it was the first time they had actually met.
Though behind the silver haired boy's smile was a chilling mystery. Levi's parents were purists and their ideologies had recently been pressing his inner thoughts down and pushing up thoughts of being a purist himself. In a perfect world, Levi wouldn't really care much about blood purism however, having conversations with friends such as Julian really cemented the idea of how elite a pureblood actually was. He, although confused, felt like he supported the idea of being a blood purist despite still unsure if it was peer pressure or if he just wanted to be one.
To add to this, his father had recently been talking up the power of dark magic more commonly known as the Dark Arts. His father presented it to him that it was the birth right of every pureblood to be able to use dark magic as their ability to perform such magic was beyond the levels of a mere half or muggle born. If anything, his father promoted the ideas of learning it which was rather ironic considering Levi was attending a school best known for their ability to promote love, good magic and so on and so forth.
His father had recently told him to not only learn but to practise and master a simple dark charm. "Oscausi." He whispered over and over as he trailed the staircases to the duelling tower knowing that it would of been empty. He didn't know what the full effects of the spell were but he did know it was a common dark magic hex used by his father. From what he could observe, he believed it to be a forced silencing charm.
His assumptions of the duelling tower being empty were obviously wrong when he found himself face to face with another student. "Maeve?" He asked with a confused tone to his face watching as one of the dummy arms fell to the floor. There was a lot of dust and confusion in the moment but perhaps she too just needed to do some harmless practise.

The spell produced a satisfying effect, albeit a messy one. Perhaps she should try putting more force into it, and see if it would blow up the dummy as effectively as the Reductor Curse. She was about to attempt this when a voice interrupted her. Lowering her wand, Maeve glanced at the new arrival. Although he was two years younger, their paths had crossed enough times - in Quidditch, class, and duelling club - for her to know him by name.
"Levi," she greeted him, suddenly aware of the dust and splinters that were still settling on the floor. She swished her wand toward the mess and cleared most of it non-verbally - not so much hiding the evidence as simply clearing the space so a fellow student could use it. The Blasting Curse wasn't terrible enough to get her in trouble, not even at Hogwarts - as long as she didn't hurt anyone using it, and didn't cause irreversible property damage. Granted, it wasn't a spell they would be allowed to use at the duelling club, as it was far too dangerous in the wrong hands - especially if those hands couldn't aim accurately.
"Are you here to try out a new spell, or practice some familiar ones?" she inquired amiably, slipping into the role of an approachable senior student.

Levi highly appreciated that Maeve had a lot on her plate. She wasn't only the their house Seeker but also their Quidditch captain, prefect and Dueling club leader. It was pretty amazing if anything and Levi had a lot of respect for the girl. " Hey Maeve. " He greeted with a smile as he took a few steps closer watching her perform some non-verbal magic. " Now that's pretty cool. " He added acknowledging her abilities. He wondered if he would get into trouble being here considering it was an out of bounds area but considering she was a prefect, perhaps he managed to escape this minor dilemma.
" Actually, I wanted to do some study about a particular spell I discovered recently... " By which of course, he meant try it out. Although he had a feeling it wouldn't really work on a dummy, he thought it was safer to attempt it here rather than attempt it on an actual person. He hesitated at first to explain what the spell was considering the nature of the type of magic it was. It wasn't exactly a light filled spell either. If anything, it was the opposite.
" See my father, he's a purist. " He explained rather comfortable as he only had to assume that one in three SLytherin's were too. " He had been pushing me to learn this particular spell which he called useful for annoying enemies. " He stood there awkwardly while smiling at her. " Well... I'm trusting you with this but like, I wanted to try a rather uncommon type of magic. " He paused for a brief second before looking down and up at her. " It's kind of a dark spell really. "

She smiled at Levi's praise of her non-verbal casting, but her face grew more serious as he began talking about the spell he wanted to study. The way he initially trailed off was a tip-off in itself, especially remembering the chat they'd had in DADA. Once a purist father was mentioned, she had little doubt they were talking dark magic here. She only speculated as to how dark. Patient as ever, the redhead allowed Levi to finish his explanation. Keeping silent tended to make people more talkative, which was quite useful.
His last statement only confirmed what she'd already realized. Curiosity had her in its grasp, though, and she now wanted to find out what kind of spell the senior Hilfiger had taught his son. Still, safety first... especially here, in a place any student or faculty member could enter at any moment.
"Is it a splashy spell? Any chance of the effects spreading or producing debris?" It might be wise to stand behind a Shield Charm while he tried it, even if that wasn't the case; she had no inkling as to how capable Levi was with new spells, and dark ones at that.

The fact that there was not even the slightest cringe to Maeve's face when the word purist rolled out of his mouth gave him slight hope that either Maeve too was a purist or she was just open minded. Either way, Levi wasn't exactly prepared to find out nor did he quite exactly have the courage to ask her. They had known each other through classes and never really had a chance to converse considering she was two years his senior. Still, Levi knew that she was a force to be reckoned with.
" Well actually..." He said shrugging his shoulders as he looked around to ensure no one was there. " My dad said it's a dark spell to use on people that are annoying. " That's really all he said to Levi considering his father didn't explain what actually the spell did or what the effects were simply it was used for annoying people. " The spell name is Oscausi." He replied waiting to see if Maeve's face would make any type of reaction at the incantation. "Have you heard of it?"
Post by MAEVE THORNE on Mar 6, 2024 8:10:55 GMT -5
The incantation alone rang only a faint bell in Maeve's mind. This had to be a spell she'd read about in one of her books, but what would it do..? Knowing what outcome to expect when casting a new spell was advisable, especially when working with Dark Arts. It was the description Levi provided that allowed her to begin connecting the dots. A spell to use on people that are annoying. Her rudimentary knowledge of Latin was enough to tell her that Os meant 'mouth'... and then it clicked.
"I think I recognize the incantation," she said slowly, her gaze sliding to the line of dummies. None of them had mouths. Well, she wasn't about to volunteer as a test subject. Perhaps Transfiguration would help here? "The spell is supposed to seal a person's mouth shut, leaving only smooth skin where the lips should be. Let me try to modify one of the dummies so you could try casting at it."
She walked closer to one of the wooden humanoid shapes and aimed at its face, focusing. The wood cracked a little where the mouth should be, and two convex lip-like lines surrounded it from top and bottom. This wouldn't win any awards in sculpting aesthetics, but it looked close enough to a human mouth. If the spell could work on inanimate objects, it should affect the dummy. The sixth-year then returned to Levi and stood a few paces behind him, so there was no way for the spell to accidentally hit her. Even so, she was standing lightly on the balls of her feet just in case she needed to leap aside. Not knowing the younger boy's spellcasting ability made her especially wary. "Go ahead, try it out."

A sense of curiosity overtook him as he listened closely and dearly to what Maeve had to share. It seemed as if Maeve was well versed in this type of magic however, Levi was still too afraid to ask how she knew about this all. Perhaps her history at Durmstrang taught her a thing or two in the past or perhaps she also found enjoyment in learning about the dark arts like Levi did. "Oscausi." He whispered once more as he watched Maeve move about.
" Ah, do you really?" He said still carrying a curious yet, excited tone to his voice. He was intrigued at just how much Maeve knew. Perhaps down the line she would be open minded to mentoring Levi. It wouldn't only make his father proud but it would also expand Levi's spell knowledge. Dark Arts were seen as a negative branch of magic however, Levi was persistent that there was some useful things to learn out of it. It surely just can't be killing this and cursing that.
Watching Maeve modify a dummy was rather interesting. It seemed she wasn't only a skilled witch but she was also quite the carpenter. " Wait, just like that? " He said checking around him to ensure it was just the two of them there. " Umm, I've never tried it before." He said as he walked a little closer to the dummy and pointed his wand.
"Oscausi." He called out and to his surprise, the dummy only moved back and forth if anything, almost as if it were laughing at him. " Why didn't it work? Am I doing something wrong?" His attempt at the spell was anything but confident. Perhaps this played a part in using a dark magic spell? He did recall his father saying something along the lines of using the spell with purpose, confidence and over all, anger.
Post by MAEVE THORNE on Mar 7, 2024 14:44:24 GMT -5
Maeve didn't want to appear like she was pushing Levi to perform the spell. Or even encouraging him, although she was guilty in that. She did alter the dummy for him, and she did tell him to go ahead. That was already fairly incriminating for a Prefect who should know better. Therefore, she refrained from expelling the boy's doubts, remaining quiet instead and watching his wariness with approval. He knew this spell should be practiced in secret, which made him more reliable in her eyes.
When the Ravenclaw finally attempted the spell, Maeve went into the patient educator mode she had used with Niklas. "Your pronunciation was perfect, so I think this has to do with your intention. Try imagining the dummy is someone you hate. Or that it's taunting you, saying something defamatory or insulting about you or your family." That usually worked for her, and it was the advice she had not dared to give him in the DADA class. Even imagining that a dark spell was being cast at a real person would seem twisted to some.

His attempts at the dark magic spell did nothing but cause the dummy to rock back and forth which really upset Levi at first. He knew he was missing something but he just didn’t know exactly what that missing thing was. Anger? Hate? He had only recently been getting into this type of things so even as a junior purist waiting to be promoted to full purist came along with some challenges. It was when Maeve spoke that it caused Levi to snap back into action and listen carefully to what she was saying.
“ Something I hate ?” He pondered on the thought for a few seconds as he closed his eyes and channeled a particular unwelcoming memory. “ Okay I got it.” He said gripping the handle of his wand As he slowly opened his eyes and pointed his wand. He had every intention to cast the spell and, as he slowly took a breath, another thought popped into his head.
“Expulso!”
He yelled as blasts of blue light came flying toward the dummy leaving it in a state much worse than it was before. The spell impacted causing parts of its body to fall apart as half the torso went flying toward a wall; “Dad told me to use that if a Muggle ever tried to hurt me.” It wasn’t exactly an angry memory, but the way his father spoke about Muggles and what they had done to the wizard in world in the past years was disgusting and enough for him to channel some anger.,.

Not having expected Levi to try a different spell, Maeve flinched at the sudden explosion. She erased the surprise from her facial expression quickly enough and nodded in approval. "That was impressive, though if you use it on a person it will get... messy." The dry wood dust and lumps of timber his blast scattered were nothing compared to the gore that would result from casting at a living being. She had yet to harm anyone outside of a duel, but if there was a need, her choices would be a little more sanitary. Something internal and immobilizing, but without too much blood. Levi's father had the right views, but she was becoming worried about his methods - and what might become of Levi if he followed the man's advice. But how could she steer him into a more cautious path without risking trouble for herself?
It wasn't even her business to guide him. She would try to help him with this one spell first, and see where it could lead. "As for Oscausi... I think the curse has some Transfiguration to it. It alters the target by removing the mouth, after all. Merely intending harm might not be enough - Transfiguration requires focus and ability to visualize the outcome, too."

" Yeah can you imagine it?" He replied with a tone of excitement to his face as he watched the dust and bits of wood come to a soft settle on the ground. " Dad's quite the duellist. He likes to teach me these things but I've never seen a use or a purpose for it." His eye pupils were darker than normal. Levi wasn't exactly known for being the type to blast things out of the blue, the teachers did see him as a law abiding citizen of the school let alone magical world. His family however, really pushed a more purist approach and hoped that he would do things similar to their life style.
" Dad once bragged about a time whe-" He was mid sentence when he looked back at Maeve and took a moment to reflect on what he had just done. " It's a dangerous spell if used in correctly, but then again, aren't all spells like this too?" He questioned thinking about how nearly all spells could be used in an offensive way. Well, with some exceptions.
" Now that sounds wicked. Did you want to practise it with me?" He asked in an excited tone as he pointed his wand to the dummy. This was perhaps the first time he had ever tried to use magic of this kind. It was powerful but he knew there was more to this than just maiming someone. " We can give it a try together?" He asked as he shrugged his shoulders pegging Maeve to join him.
Post by MAEVE THORNE on Mar 14, 2024 11:19:28 GMT -5
It sounded like Levi's father was quite a character. As the Ravenclaw cut himself off mid-sentence, she wondered if he had been about to mention something incriminating. Had the Hilfiger patriarch killed some Muggles? Or used the Unforgivables on a human? She was fairly sure her own father had done both of those things, and possibly even something worse, but he never mentioned any such stories to her. Maeve knew better than to ask him directly.
Reining in her curiosity, she resisted the temptation to urge Levi to share what his father once bragged about. Perhaps it was one of those 'if-I-told-you-I-would-have-to-kill-you' type of scenarios - something Hilfiger Sr. did not want people outside his immediate family knowing. Either way, the man was right in training his son... even if telling the boy to use these spells on Muggles was a tad risky. "Dueling will eventually come in handy. This country hasn't gone a decade without a war for the last fifty or so years. Being able to use the spells your dad is teaching you could save your life, once another conflict breaks out."
She nodded in agreement to Levi's statement. "Yes, magic in itself is volatile. It needs skill and precision to make it work the way we want it. Some spells are more dangerous than others, but there are also non-Dark charms that could kill a roomful of people..."
The offer to join him in practicing the spell made Maeve grin. She had spent the last few minutes thinking of how it should be cast, and was already itching to try it out. "Why not. Only, I think we need a new target." The one Levi had blasted to pieces looked like it was about to collapse. She went over to the row of dummies, selected a pair and Transfigured their featureless faces, giving each of them a mouth. This time her work looked a little better, more symmetrical than the first attempt - although still not entirely life-like.
Once the task was finished, she walked back to a spot next to Levi and aimed her wand at one of the two modified dummies. "Oscausi." There was a flash of white light and the dummy swayed a little. Once the motion stopped, she could see that her spell had been partially successful - only a few thin lines remained where the convex wooden lips had been. "Your turn," she urged Levi.

Perhaps this was a fault of the young Ravenclaw to trust almost everyone instantly. Regrettable, but these type of actions had caused him quite the trouble the year before and the year before that too. Levi wasn't exactly the secretive type however, he did know when to keep his mouth shut especially when it came to family affairs considering the type of interests his bloodline had. He did however, know when to simply change the topic and for some reason, he was quite good at that. Almost as if it were a secret skill of his.
He did have a feeling that Maeve was switched on enough to gather the facts around what he held back from saying. " Ah the war!" He replied rolling his eyes as he remembered how often his father bragged about what and how he participated in a few epic battles in his so called younger years. " That's a story for another day. Dueling however, will always be a story for the now. " He replied hoping to change the topic slightly.
"There are?" He asked curiously as he turned his full attention to what Maeve was now saying. " Non dark charms like what?" He asked as curious as ever to what was happening. " If you think of a spell, please let me know." He shrugged his shoulders as he watched Maeve walk around him before casting the same spell that his father had told him to use.
" Well you've already used the spell on this dummy..." He said as he looked at the partially distorted face of the dummy along side the one he just blew up before looking at another dummy and back to Maeve. Pointing his wand, he grinned an evil smile as he gripped onto the wand handle ever so slightly tighter. " I have a better idea if you're up for it." He aimed his wand toward the dummy before turning that evil grin into an evil smile.
Now, a sudden thought popped into his head. " Let's try it on a real person." He pointed his wand over to Maeve. " Or better yet, you can try it on me." He quickly realised just how threatening his actions could be perceived and he quickly lowered his wand. " Won't be of much use to a dummy, we need real life results."

Levi appeared unwilling to discuss the prospect of war; Maeve said no more on the subject. He did show interest in her mention of harmful non-dark spells, which made the corners of her lips twitch upward. "Incendio could burn down an entire building, provided no magic-wielders are there to save it - and we learn the spell in our first year. Sagisortia could shoot and severely wound up to six people at once, yet it is not considered to be a curse. Bombarda Maxima could cause a ceiling to collapse and crush everyone in a room, but we call it a charm and do not consider it to be an evil spell." Those were only the examples she came up with on the spot. There were more - it all depended on one's creativity.
The fourth-year's decision not to cast at the dummy again made her suddenly wary. Did he want to use the curse on her? There was no way she would allow that, at least not until he succeeded with an inanimate target without producing any unexpected effects. Maeve couldn't tell if Oscausi was blockable with a simple shield, which meant she would need to dodge. That was just fine - years of Quidditch practice made her agile, while defensive magic was still something she needed to work on.
Luckily for both of them, Levi did not attack her without permission. Maeve relaxed a little as she considered his proposal. Trying out certain dark spells on people, as well as experiencing the effects of those spells, was an important part of learning. However, they would get in trouble if something went wrong. She was now confident that she could cast it correctly, but what if reversing it was beyond her skill? The Ravenclaw would need the school Healer's help, and he would be questioned... "We can try, if you wish," she began slowly, hoping the boy could be trusted. If he snitched on her, it wouldn't lead to expulsion but it could ruin her model student image and wreck her chances of becoming the Head Girl. "But if something goes wrong, you will have to say that you were practicing human Transfiguration on yourself and removed your mouth by accident. I can't be sure if I'll manage to restore it by myself, and the faculty shouldn't learn about us practicing this spell. So are you certain you want to be a test subject?"
