Then the whole world stood still as two best friends hugged each other allowing themselves to be at their most vulnerable. Though he knew Julian would never admit to it, Levi considered Julian a best friend and he had a feeling that Julian thought of his just the same. The two had grown up in separable so it was only natural to have this assumption.
“ Julian. “ He whispered as he wrapped his arms even tighter around the boy as he tried to rest his head over Julians. “ Mum always said just how beautiful your mom is. To me, you are a spitting image of her. “ He could feel what felt like water dripping down his arm and shoulder; his shirt leaving a wet patch where Julian’s eyes were. Levi closed his eyes as all their previous conversations were washed away in this bitter sweet yet beautiful moment.
He knew Julian was uncomfortable with physical touch so he was so surprised to see him like this. In his most vulnerable. “ You’re always gonna be safe with me. “ Levi was only a year older than him but he had always seen Julian as his best friend and someone he’d go to the ends of the world for. Levi allowed himself to savour the moment because he knew it wouldn’t happen again and because he also had a feeling Julian would deny this ever happened or possibly remove his memories.
He pulled himself away before Julian got the chance to do so but only after trying to hand him a blood stained tissue that was in his pocket. “ Just use the other corner to wipe your face. “ He replied before placing himself. On the ground allowing his legs to relax from standing and carrying Julian on him.
“Are you okay?” He then asked waiting to see how Julian was going before he were to continue with answering the questions he had just asked about Levi’s future plans. Answers that he didn’t exactly know how to answer himself especially when it came to answering how he would carry on the business. Of course, in the eyes of the wizarding world, his parents were honourable people who worked to protect the wizarding community but behind closed doors is what his father wanted Levi to lead.
The shady dark arts and cursed item trade his parents had led behind close door and under the roof of his very own mansion he called a home. He wasn’t even sure how he as going to explain to Julian about this. Had he already known or was he about to drop another bombshell on top of him finding out that he was a training dummy.

His head ached dully from the onslaught of information being thrown at him. Julian could still not fathom Levi's father utilizing an illicit curse against his own son for training, not to mention bruising him so badly that the boy resembled a plum more than an actual human. With the adrenaline wearing off from their initial duel, Julian felt a wave of exhaustion but he fought against it valiantly, blinking back the sleepless nights plagued by persistent nightmares. To now have a better understanding of Levi's suddenly icy demeanour was a revelation that had several pieces of the Hilfiger puzzle falling into place - which, Julian understood - would allow him to better read changes in behaviour and anticipate the Ravenclaw's actions.
He had not expected to be hugged, the gesture causing goosebumps to prickle his arms and the hairs on the back of his neck to raise while his heart began to pound violently and rather painfully in his chest. He had crumpled beneath the other boys arms - powerless to stop the reaction. His mind craved the emotional connection and warm comfort of another person - - but his body was physically unable to accept it. He felt trapped and almost claustrophobic at the touch; the closeness of Levi provoking an intense and uncomfortable reaction within him. He could barely breathe. Let me go. He found he did not have the strength to push Hilfiger away from himself, the lean, wiry strength of his arms useless when all he could compare this hug to was the last time his mother had held him like this. He never wanted to think of it again. Julian blinked back his tears, vision blurring the surrounding room. Despite feeling an overwhelming and anxious sensation physically, his emotions had slipped through the cracks... And that both worried and infuriated him. Emotions were for the weak, and he would never be weak. Not again.
Levi was speaking to him, his whispers cutting through his internal screaming to remove himself from this situation. He had spoken gently about his mother, and how he was a spitting image of her -- the one fact his father could not bear. The reason it was so difficult for him to look at his own reflection... even to smile. Julian remained silent there, still kneeling on the cold floor, hands shaking with both apprehension and dejection. He had not meant for the Ravenclaw to see him like this - and he certainly had not expected this to be the way his evening unfolded. He had almost betrayed his father and by extension his entire family. What occurred within the household remained in the household - that was the way he had been raised.
"You're always gonna be safe with me." Julian heard the words uttered by the older boy, knew they were meant to be comforting to him - and in a way they were - but for some reason, to his own dread, all Julian could think in that moment was: but you may not always be safe with me.
Just as Julian felt his capacity for physical contact was at its limit - Hilfiger pulled out of the embrace, and a flash of red and white caught his attention. He breathed in deeply, oxygen rushing back into his bloodstream as he privately relished the space recreated between them. After a brief moment in which the Slytherin composed himself, Julian turned his head away from the offered tissue, "what for?" His eyes had been wet, yes, but he was never, ever going to admit to it, and nor would he acknowledge what had just passed between them. He had slipped very quickly back into his usual demeanour, forcing his emotionally destroyed state to the very back of his mind. The needle and thread he had meant to utilize for Hilfigers leg were still held delicately in Julian's hand, awaiting use, though the bleeding on Levi's leg seemed to have stemmed due to swift spell-work.
"Are you okay?" Came Levi's next question, and Julian had to compose himself before he snarled. He frowned instead, still feeling the saltiness of his tears on his cheeks, though they had since dried. He would not wipe them, for that would be admitting to their falling. "I am not the one with a severed thigh," he responded, eager to leave their intimate moment behind, "would you like me to stitch you up, or did you want to stall some more?" He was ready to perform the minor procedure, having gained back control of his beating heart and stemmed the shakiness in his limbs.

It seemed just right for Levi to pull out of their tender moment as he could feel the sense of the sentimental moment had over stayed it's welcome. Levi, who was still feeling the pain running through his thigh limped away back over to a nearby pillar to support his lean but battered body against it. He looked at Julian once more before finding himself in shock to what Julian had said. More amusing and confused if anything.
" Are you always going to be this stubborn?" He said laughing slightly as he tucked away the rejected tissue at hand before shaking his head slightly. Even after all this, Julian continued to hold that strong stoic demeanour that Levi admired about him. He was always so cool, calm and collected even when he felt emotions. He assumed correct in that Julian would play it out that nothing had ever happened just now and that this was all but a lie. Levi would naturally agree to it without the two even mentioning things.
" Ignore my leg. " He responded as he looked carefully at Julian, trying to make eye contact with him but instead was welcomed with a frown. Ahh, there he is. The same old stubborn Julian. He thought as he smiled and let out a small held back laugh. It seemed Julian wanted to move past their little emotional encounter and onto other things.
" You'll do no such thing Julian. " He said as he began limping away to hide behind another pillar. Slowly but surely. " You'll have to catch me first. " He replied raising his voice slightly louder in volume in a sing song kind of way. Always the playful Levi in every form. Even when in pain, Levi would find every opportunity to make a game out of things.

Now that he could breathe again, Julian was able to push every feeling away from his heart and re-encase it with a stone shell. He gave himself a few breaths to reintroduce oxygen to his system, feeling more composed with every influx. Hilfiger had never hugged him before - so he had no defences for the move and felt awfully vulnerable with this turn of events - though Julian somehow doubted that there would ever be another such vulnerability - lest he change.
They were still surrounded by Hilfiger's protective charm, which meant that no sound penetrated through other than those noises that were created inside the room. He would have to get Hilfiger to teach him that charm - no doubt it would come in handy in the future for sensitive conversations. Levi had struggled over to the same pillar they had both been at moments ago, his leg clearly still giving him grief. Julian grasped the needle he held a little more tightly, watching the limp carefully, assessing the gait. "I hit your sartorius muscle," Julian spoke finally as Levi supported himself against the pillar, "you will not be able to walk very well for weeks if we do not heal it completely." Anatomy was not a new-found interest for Julian - what with his already founded curiosity in healing - but it had been a particular focus of his of late, and one that he studied with unyielding absorption. Knowing how a body worked was very important for any prospective healer.
"Are you always going to be this stubborn?" Levi had laughed softly, clearly amused by his absolute refusal to acknowledge anything that had just transpired. Julian crossed his arms, "yes," he answered honestly, knowing no other way to avoid admitting weakness. Hilfiger then told him to ignore the leg - to which Julian pressed his lips together with such pressure they went white. Why was Hilfiger so determined not to be healed? A leg injury could mean a weakness in duel stance... in running...in stability. He couldn't fathom leaving such an injury - despite his earlier healing spell-work the cut was still deep.
As Levi again told him he wouldn't allow Julian to stitch him up, moving around the pillar slowly to go back into hiding, Julian uncrossed his arms and tossed the needle and thread away. "Fine," he relented rather irritated, not allowing himself to be amused by these games, "do not come crawling to me when the adrenaline wears off and you can barely stand without being in pain." He didn't want Levi in more pain than he was likely already in with the excessive bruising, but if the Ravenclaw was going to also be stubborn - Julian wasn't going to chase him. He could still catch the scent of blood mingling in the air around them, and his eyes went to the cast of droplets splayed across the floor where the initial cut had been made. "You've made a mess," he then said dryly, ignoring the fact that he had caused the blood spatter entirely, "we better clean it up before someone passes through." Otherwise there would be questions, no doubt - and potential authority involved. Neither of the two of them needed more attention on them.

It seemed that Julian wasn't interested in playing Levi's childish games or perhaps he was just playing his own game in which Levi had to try and find an answer to unlock how stubborn Julian could get. He had always wondered what Julian's laughter sounds like. He has been tempted to put the tickling charm on him just to see what his laughter would sound like heavens forbid him crack a smile at the same time.
Hearing his short one word reply made Levi's childish side come out once more. " Yay! Does that mean I win this game? " He called out as he limped back over but only after he checked that Julian wasn't holding the thread and needle. Limping back over, he waved his wand in the air causing the silver protective shield around them to slowly fade away. It seemed their confidential conversation was over as was their lesson considering just how badly damaged his own thigh was.
However, Levi had one one more trick up his sleeve. He paused his thoughts as he looked around at not only the destruction around him but also the blood stains that had come from the bleeding thigh and the river of blood that came with it. Pooling up in certain sections in where Levi knew he stood still or sat down. " Julian, your clothes." He said as he pointed at Julian's clothes with his wand. It appeared that some of his blood transferred over to Julian's attire.
" It might of rubbed off when we hu-h- " He paused for a second knowing Julian would never really accept the fact that the two had just welcomed a warm embrace with each other. Then again, Levi was also starting to question if Julian was even human. " Anyway, we should get cleaned up. " He turned around and looked at the blood stains on the floor.
"Scourgify." He whispered as he waved his wand as the blood stains slowly started to almost seep into the concrete floor beneath them. It was a little eerie if anything. Transfiguration had slowly started becoming one of Levi's stronger subjects and this was just an example of it. " A simple vanishment charm. Amazing don't you think?" He said as the last of the blood stains vanished before he looked at Julian with an evil grin. " Hey Julian?" He said smiling in a cheeky manner before looking at him dead straight in the eye and quickly raised his wand.
"Rictusempra!." He called out hoping he would finally be able to see a laugh come out off Julian.

"Game?" Julian repeated as though the word were foreign to him, "I do not partake in your games, Hilfiger." Julian had always been far more practical than anyone else his age that he knew - and of course this was a product of his upbringing, and of the trauma he had experienced at a young age. Being a Mulciber, too, had come with certain expectations - ones rooted firmly within his families lineage. The Mulciber's had always been the Dark Lords loyal servants - and without a current Dark Lord, they were in an almost cryogenic sleep: waiting, practicing, studying, building... He had been raised in a family that did not accept play, or fun - these were worthless endeavours, even in children. Everything was serious, everything was a lesson, everything was judged.
Levi removed the protective charm, and the sounds of the outside world was comprehendible once more. His ears picked up distant conversations in the hallways outside their space and shouts from outside on the grounds.
Julian followed Hilfigers gaze as is tracked around the room - landing on several key areas of blood where Levi had chosen to rest. The boy had lost quite a bit of blood, and would likely take a few days to recover fully. It was truly a wonder that he was still standing - though Julian supposed he was much fitter than the average teenager and therefore much more resistant to weakness. He felt the Ravenclaw's eyes on him then, and tensed as Levi pointed his wand in his direction, even if only to direct attention to the blood on his clothes. "Hm?" He glanced down at his charcoal jumper, catching sight of the splotches splayed across it. He heard Levi's pause at mention of their hug, thankful the boy was not willing to further embarrass him. "Well that certainly looks incriminating," he admitted, not daring to think on the embrace that had caused the transfer.
"Anyway, we should get cleaned up." Julian nodded as Levi turned away to attend to the floor, pulling the ruined jumper over his head, leaving him in his white school shirt and the emerald green tie that hung loosely around his neck. Luckily the blood had not soaked through the jumper. Julian tossed his jumper by his robes, briefly wondering what poor school Elf was going to happen across his dirty laundry and likely have a heart attack on sight. The image almost amused him. Hearing Hilfiger cast a charm, Julian turned his attention back to the Ravenclaw as he began to eliminate the blood stains on the floor with surprising efficiency. He thought back with a certain distaste to his summer break, and the physical labour he had endured cleaning the Manor, "methodical," he agreed, almost mesmerized by the blood as it seemingly seeped back into itself, the floor spotless.
A sudden call out caught him off-guard, and Julian snapped his head in Hilfiger's direction, noting the playful tone and not quite liking it. The spell was cast before Julian could fully react - and at his short distance to the Ravenclaw, and with his basilisk-skin lined robes sitting uselessly on the floor several feet away, the jet of silver light hit him before he could cast any sort of defence, pushing him back several inches.
Julian felt as though the air had suddenly been pushed out of his lungs and he dropped to his knees with a thud, devoid of sudden oxygen. He recognised the charm used: a common diversionary charm utilized in duels to distract and weaken an opponent. But why would Hilfiger use it against him? Their duel was over - and this was certainly a betrayal of trust. Julians back heaved as something tried to force its way out of him - and he felt like his lungs were on fire. He doubled down, arms wrapping around his torso as another heave choked him. It was the tickling charm - and he knew it was laughter attempting to escape him, much to his confusion. He didn't want to laugh - he was still in mourning - and although he might not have shown it externally, Julian was in a lot of pain.
Did his friend not see? They had just shared an almost sacred moment in which Julian had felt comfortable and trusting enough to release some of that pent up anger and sadness - and now this. The Ravenclaw wanted him to laugh. Laugh at what? All of his emotions had come crashing to the surface only moments prior - and for the first time Julian had allowed himself to briefly weep. Casting at him afterward felt like a low blow. He should have expected it -- he shouldn't have trusted.
A third heave and Julian could not fight it any longer, lest he stop breathing. So he laughed - his laughter ringing out in the room now unprotected by Hilfigers charm, echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings, coming in waves - though it was not a happy sound. It was dry and hoarse as though his throat were torn and shredded, and it was cold - with absolutely no trace of humor. Julian made eye contact with Hilfiger mid-laugh, and glared. He had let his guard down in this room, shown trust in shedding his armoured cloak, even demonstrated care in offering to heal the Ravenclaw - and he would be betrayed by his friends curiosity and games. This was not a game to him. His body could not fight the spell.
"S-Stop," he managed between the laughter full of malice, back shaking in an effort to control himself, arms tightening their grip around his torso as he buckled downward. He would not trust again.
