Linnea was second-guessing herself. She never really liked kids that much. What was she even doing here? She probably shouldn't have said yes to this posting but here she was. There was no backing out now. At least the kids she was teaching were a little older. Not first years anyway.
Linnea arrived early for the first class and sat at her desk at the front of the room and waited for the students. It took a little while, but they all trickled in and sat down. When she stood up to get started, it almost startled her that they were all looking at her, all attentive. They wanted to know what she knew, or at least they wanted to not get in trouble for it. This was odd.
Despite being a Ravenclaw, Linnea had never been very strong academically. But she did manage an O in Ancient Runes for her NEWT and also experienced many runes in her travels around the world. It definitely was important for an adventurer.
"Good morning, class. My name is Professor Bergeron and I will be your new Ancient Runes professor." She paused a moment for them to nod or acknowledge or whatever they had to do. "We're going to get started with a bit of an introduction."
Linnea stood at the front of the class and looked out at their faces staring back at her. "Runes are used two-fold - for both direct translations, while also each representing a word of their own. We will practice working with both. Direct translations can be useful if something is written in runes and you need to know what it says. But the representation of each rune can help you use runic magic, or if you become an inventor one day, imbue extra strength in your invention with a rune." The liklihood of these little kids becoming inventors was probably pretty slim but you never knew.
Linnea started to relax a little more and paced a bit to the side of her desk instead of standing in front of it. "For example, if you created a necklace and put a protective charm on it and added a rune that represents protection, it would make your protective charm stronger."
Linnea then walked over to the blackboard. "But today we will just start with the alphabet." Linnea waved her wand and some words appeared on the blackboard in front of her.
"Try writing out your name on some parchment in runes. Not every letter is translatable. If you have a C, either use K or S depending on which it sounds like. If you have a Y, please use i. If you have a V, please use U. If you have a Q, choose what it sounds like, perhaps K. If you have an X, also please choose what it sounds like, maybe Z."

Lottie sat attentive to the new professor. She seemed pretty nice and Lottie was honestly very excited to see what she would teach them this year! It was a bit of an introduction but that was fine with Lottie. She seemed to really know what she was talking about.
Lottie decided to sit with her friend LIA FLETCHER and after the professor was done talking, she turned to her excitedly. "Wow, this is going to be a lot of fun!" She got out some parchment and her quill to start writing her name in the runic alphabet. She hoped they would get to do more later, like actually writing a rune with a spell to make the magic stronger.
She looked up at the blackboard and then back at her parchment after each letter to try and figure out which ones to use.

Lottie looked down at her paper but then she noticed she used the i instead of the L for the beginning of her first name. She tried to fix it to the right rune by putting a diagonal line from the top down to the right a bit.

Ancient Runes was not Maeve's best subject, but she still received consistent Os in it. She had learned several runic alphabets over the years; it was just another language, simple and straightforward compared to challenging, purely magical concepts - such as Golpalott's laws taught in Potions. Since the new professor assigned them a task, she took out her writing supplies and began working.
ᛗᚨᛖᚢᛖ ᛏᚺᛟᚱᚾᛖ
Below it, she added a purely phonetic transcription - simply to be thorough with the asignment.
ᛗᛇᚢ ᚦᛟᚱᚾ
Neither translation represented her name with enough accuracy, but that didn't matter. The purpose of the exercise was simply to become more familiar with the Elder Futhark. She set her quill down and looked back up at the professor. Perhaps there would be more similar tasks today.

This was Henri's second year in Ancient Runes and despite doing okay last year, he still found himself looking at this majestic artform as nothing more than squiggly lines on some form of sediments or stone tablet of sorts amongst the plethora of other different types of communication methods.
What made him interested in the subjects was because of exactly what Professor Bergeron had mentioned, the ability to enhance or strengthen a protection charm. Taking note of the others in class already ahead of him, Henri began to try and decipher what was in front of him despite only being some sort of alphabet. Following the instructions, Henri began to script down his name in the rune. Thank goodness he had a short name.

With his best attempts done at writing his first name, he looked around hoping someone could correct or guide him on the right path without disturbing the Professor too much.

As a new third year, this was Lia’s first year taking Ancient Runes, or any of her new elective classes for that matter. She didn’t know quite what to expect from the class, but she was happy to have found more subjects that were not purely based on spellcasting. She’d gotten much better over the last few years, but she was still more comfortable with hands-on courses. Ancient Runes was a bit more on the academic side, but it seemed interesting, almost like learning a new secret language.
She was also glad she had at least one friend in the class, since it seemed most people avoided this course, preferring some of the other perceivably easier subjects. She nodded in response to Lottie’s praise of the class so far. “Maybe if we get good enough, we’ll be able to communicate using only runes, and send each other coded messages.” There was really no reason for the two girls to ever communicate in code, but it sounded cool, like something from a spy movie.
Following the rest of the class’ lead, Lia took out a piece of parchment and quill to begin writing her own name in runes. She wasn’t sure if she should write her full name, or the name she usually went by, but decided to start with her full name. It would be easy to shorten it afterwards.

She struggled a bit with her last name, trying to find a way to spell out the ‘ch’ without the C, before deciding to follow the teacher’s advice and use an S instead. She wasn’t sure if that was correct, but she hoped at least she was close.

After numerous school years that proved to be chock-full of activity, Maeve found she could not easily bear slower classes. If the stream of new information and spellcasting practice halted, she would use the free time to inconspicuously study another subject. Merlin knew, she could use every spare minute - especially during this last term that would culminate in her taking more than a dozen N.E.W.T.s.
She was about to take out an Arithmancy textbook when she spotted the Rowle boy looking as though he needed some assistance. Befriending Ilona no longer seemed possible, but perhaps she could get to know her little brother. A Rowle was a Rowle, even if they happened to be disowned by their own family. With the right kind of influence, one of them might eventually decide to reclaim their inheritance.
Catching his eye, she chose to offer aid. The redhead smoothly slipped into a seat next to Henri and inspected his work. Only the first name was written down, and with an error at that. "You used Ingwaz there in the middle, but it is an engma - it's normally used when the n is followed either by a g or a k. For your name, Naudiz fits much better." Having learned multiple foreign languages from private tutors - even English was not Maeve's first language, although she spoke it fluently - she knew quite a lot about linguistics. Hopefully, her explanation had been simple enough.

He was wondering how he even managed to pass this subject last year considering it felt like his eyes were just scanning a random amount of lines. It was literally like learning a new language and he was still learning the basics and everyone else was ahead of him.
He bowed his head down as he let out an exhausted sigh as his hand ran through his black hair as he groaned slightly after. “ I have regrets now. “ He whispered before hearing a voice speak to him. “ uh? “ He appreciated the person offering him advice.
“ I did a what and a what? “ The words she said sounded like absolute gibberish to I’m. “ Thank you for your help. I just really don’t understand all of this. “He said starting to feel his. Emotions get the best of him along with frustration. “ Why is it so hard. “

It turned out her explanation had been a tad too complicated. Maeve couldn't blame the boy for not comprehending it - she was used to discussing language in linguistic terms, while most never thought of it in any terms whatsoever.
"Wrong type of n," she simplified, an apologetic smile on her lips. Since he was observably frustrated, Maeve sought for words that could encourage him. "You're only studying Ancient Runes for the second year - it takes time to memorize all the symbols and their meanings. Learning runes is like learning a new language, one that is entirely different from ours. You're doing just fine." Some people were better at languages than others, and almost everyone struggled mastering dead languages that only existed in writing. "Perhaps you should try writing down your surname next, and I'll try to help if you get stuck?"

He honestly felt like crying in the very moment. He wasn’t sure if it was because he was struggling, tired, going through puberty and hormone changes or the fact that things had been boiling up inside of him. He was greatful for the help Maeve was offering him but her help seemed confusing for him.
“ Thank you again for your help. “ It was here he noticed the Head Girl badge on her robes. “ You’re the head girl? “ He asked only pausing to look at the badge before looking back at his work and back to Maeve. “ I’m sure the Professor won’t mind you helping me out, but could you explain the N thing for me again? “ He was a little confounded on that concept. He didn’t understand how he managed to complete the other letters correctly but got the letter N incorrect.
