TIME: December 25th
For the first time in a long time, barely anyone went home for Christmas. Everyone wanted to be at Firenze for the Yule Ball. Of course, only fourth years and older could attend unless they had a date who was a fourth year or older. So some of the younger students still went home for Christmas. Of course, that was the Firenze years. It wasn't the same for Dahshur and Augustine and Selveira. Anyone who was there from another school would be old enough to attend as well.
The Dining Hall was decorated very beautifully with wreaths, garland, multiple Christmas trees, mistletoe placed in various spots along the edge of the room, and poinsettias on every table. There was lots of space for people to dance, as well as various tables along the edge of the room for those who wanted a drink, snack, or to sit and let their feet rest for a bit.
The school hired a band to play, and they would be playing there all night. The first song was a rather slow, instrumental song, though, as the Dodecawizard Champions had to do the first dance. It was a more classical ballroom dance. Once they all got out onto the dance floor, they all twirled around the ballroom for the first few minutes before the song ended and everyone clapped. Then everyone else got to dance as well and the Champions could sit down if they wanted.
The Yule Ball wasn't just in the Dining Hall, though. There was a decorated area outside the front of the school with some benches and ice sculptures for people to go and get some fresh air as well. The ice sculptures had to be bewitched to stay frozen, though, as they were in Italy and there was barely any snow on the ground. There actually was a little, which was surprising, but not enough to roll around in or make snowmen. It would probably melt soon anyway. Northern Italy definitely had a lot of snow with the mountains but Firenze was more south than that.
((Feel free to dance, chat, eat, whatever you'd like! There are various professors and Headmasters and Headmistresses here so don't misbehave too badly!))

" Man this is so itchy!" Calvin cried out loud while scratching his neck in an attempt to somewhat soften the so called wool shirt that laid upon his skin. Calvin happened to have grown up in a more rural part of Australia so having a suit on wasn't exactly his ideal cup of tea. " Surely there's got to be like a fabric softener charm for this... " He pondered on the thought. Could such a charm exist?
Being one of the school champions, he was one of the first to arrive at the Yule Ball dressed in a sleek black suit with a white shirt and a cute little bowtie with the school emblem printed on the tie. " Well here we go. " He said as he finished his preparations pulling out a sliver of hair from his finely combed look to have a little flicker of hair hanging on his face.
He pushed open a doorway to enter into the magnificently decorated hall where the music from a far distance away, sounded as crisp as ever. It seemed the school didn't hold back on anything. " Well this is nice isn't it? " He whispered as he continued to walk around the hall smiling at those smiling at him.

The Yule Ball was what Acacia had been looking forward to the most, ever since the Goblet of Fire refused to spit out her name and announce her as champion for Xanadu. She was dressed impeccably in a white dress with dainty accessories, some of which she had picked out before arriving at Firenze, others she ordered by owl recently to update her look with the newest fashion trend. So she was beautiful but alone, as she had dumped her date, a lame boy from her school, just a few hours ago.
The Vietnamese-Irish looked around the room freely, listening to the music played by the band, when she made eye contact with the Augustine champion. “Hey Calvin,” she said as she moved closer to him, ”Wanna dance?” It hurt her pride a little to ask first, but he was a champion and a pureblood, both of which were important to her.

Being a champion meant having to do the first dance of the ball. Tobias and his date did so and when the song ended and signified that the Champions could do as they liked, Tobias headed off of the dance floor with his date. The girl was soon asked to dance by someone else and whisked away. He didn't mind that as they were only attending as friends in the first place.

Being a dancing queen wasn’t exactly his most fond idea. He was quite terrible at dancing and he purposely didn’t bring a date for that exact reason. Despite having numerous dancing lessons with both his own teaching staff as well as teaching staff here in Hogwarts, he found himself still not being able to follow simple instructions to dance. He even attempted to place foot step numbers on the ground to follow the steps and that was extremely futile.
“ Well, sure why not. “ Calvin replied to the other that approached him. He didn’t mind her. She was easy on the eyes. “ How’s your night been anyway? “ He asked with a charming smile on his face as he walked a few steps ahead of Acacia before stopping in the middle of the room. “ Umm… “ He asked nervously while almost looking like he was twiddling his thumbs. “ I’m not the best dancer....maybe you can lead? “ He asked as his Australian accent came through his words.

The Yule Ball was one of the events Desiree had been most looking forward to that term, particularly as she was one of the Beauxbatons champions. She had custom ordered her dress months prior in preparation. After all, she wanted to make an impression. Stepping out onto the dance floor with the other champions, her sleek silvery blue dress shone in the lights. All eyes were on her, or at least in her mind they were.
With utmost grace she twirled around with her “date”, if she had to call him that, in synchronicity to the rest of the champions, years of dance classes and elegant balls proving useful. Once their contractually obligated dance was complete, the pair split off to mingle amongst the crowd. He was more so arm candy after all, somebody attractive to make her look good, and who wouldn’t step on her toes. Desiree hadn’t found anybody actually worthy to date her so far that year, and she was very particular.
As the rest of the students began joining them on the dance floor, Desiree made her way over to the refreshments table for a glass of pumpkin juice. She would have much preferred a glass of champagne on such an occasion, but of course school rules restricted the consumption of alcohol due to the younger students attending.

Silvia arrived at the ball with an older Dahshur boy as her date. She didn't know him very well, and suspected that her Veela charm was responsible for the awkwardly blurted-out request to go to the Yule Ball together. He had seemed horrified once the question was out, and a few of their schoolmates were beginning to snicker. Silvia agreed, if only to rescue the poor boy from the unpleasant situation.
Despite being a tongue-tied blushing mess, he surprised Silvia by leading the waltz gracefully. Once the dance ended, though, he mumbled something about getting drinks and fled. She had a feeling it would take him a while to come back with their refreshments. The Charm tended to affect certain personality types quite cruelly.
She went to find a seat, content to be a mere spectator as other students danced. Claiming a small unoccupied table, the blonde sat down and smoothed the skirt of her gown. Her mother had picked it; she reasoned that the starry motifs would suit the winter solstice celebration. Silvia supposed they did. Her gaze wandered over the groups of partygoers as she lazily tallied how many others tried to reflect the general theme of the ball in their attire.

Taking a sip of her drink, Desiree’s gaze trailed across the Dining Hall. It was pretty, she had to admit. The theming was on point with all the red and green, although it was missing some of the elegance from Beauxbatons events. She liked Firenze well enough as a school, and she was enjoying her year abroad so to speak, it would just never compare to Beauxbatons in her not so humble opinion.
Casting her gaze now towards the other students in the room, she noticed a particular blonde sitting alone at a table. Silvia Stirling. She had been meaning to speak to her fellow competitor since the events of the First Task, but had yet to find a moment alone with the blonde. Desiree was nothing if not proud, and the fact that another student had helped her in the task was not a fact she wanted getting around. Yet she still wished to acknowledge the kind gesture and thank her properly. This seemed as good a time as any, so Desiree made her way over to Silvia. “May I join you?”

Hearing a semi-familiar voice address her, Silvia looked away from the dancing couples. "Of course, go ahead," she replied with an amicable and slightly uncomfortable smile. After the first task, she didn't know how to appraise the interaction with Desiree. Had the small bit of aid she'd offered made a difference? Was she supposed to somehow acknowledge it, perhaps by asking the French girl how it went in the end? But that could make it seem like some reciprocal gesture was expected. While Silvia wouldn't say no to having an ally in the tournament, it's not how this competition worked - only one could win, and helping others should not be expected of the champions. Eventually, she had decided not to mention anything. During the weeks that followed the task, she ceased thinking about it altogether - daily academics and the search for clues occupied all her time.
The apprehensions were trickling back into her mind now, and the blonde quickly decided not to bring the tournament up. "I wonder if they always decorate the place so lavishly for Yule, or if it's an effort to impress the guests," she mused, opting for a neutral topic for starters.

Desiree nodded in thanks as she took the seat next to her competitor. “Your gown is very beautiful,” she stated immediately, having noticed it earlier when both were on the dance floor. Most of the students were dressed quite well that evening, but Desiree had to give props to Silvia for her attire. After her own, it was one of the nicer dresses of the event, at least in her opinion.
She was grateful for the bit of small talk to start, still unsure how to quite broach the subject without making things uncomfortable between the two. Other than that one interaction during the task, the two had not had much contact with one another, so perhaps getting to know each other first would be a good start. “It is probably a bit of both. The Italian are known for their extravagance. Although I suppose so are the French,” she added with a slight chuckle, referring to the typical French stereotypes. Desiree had to concede, however, that they were not all false. The French could be a very proud people. “Have you been enjoying your time at Firenze so far?” She asked, hoping to avoid the true reason she joined Silvia’s table for a moment longer.

The compliment made Silvia beam. As a proud teenager, she knew better than to say 'Oh, yeah, my mom picked it' - even though it was true - so she went with, "Thanks! Yours is absolutely stunning, too." Although Silvia's clothing was never second-hand or cheap, she suspected that Desiree's current garb must have been more expensive than any piece of clothing in her own wardrobe. The French truly cared about style - her mother had mentioned that when reminiscing about her time studying at Beauxbatons.
She inclined her head in agreement with Desiree's statement. The Italian extravagance was something she had already noticed, and the French one she'd heard plenty about. "Is this at all similar to Christmas decorations at Beauxbatons?" she asked, gesturing vaguely to indicate the whole hall. Hogwarts always went for the usual bright colours of this season, with massive spruce trees and shiny baubles, which was classical but not classy. The blonde forced her thoughts away from the subject. She wasn't a Hogwarts student anymore.
"It's been lovely so far. The classrooms are a bit too packed, but the students here are amiable and the palace is beautiful." Silvia was also becoming increasingly more anxious about the tournament as the second task approached, unable to truly enjoy the Firenze benefits she'd just listed, but she kept that part to herself.

Acacia smiled brightly. “It’s been okay. I enjoyed watching you guys do the first dance,” she said. What went unsaid was that she would be having a much better time now that the Champions were done receiving special attention. There was only so much she could endure before accidentally letting her jealousy show. Ironically, she did like having a Champion as her first dance partner of the night. She returned the question as she followed Calvin to the middle of the hall, “What about you? How has been your night, and your stay at Firenze so far?”
He was adorable asking her to lead the dance. She was far from being a dancing queen herself, and said so honestly. “I’m not great either. We can both try though!” She took his hand, her other hand on his waist, and tried to lead a few steps.

At this stage, he had barely made friends with students from Firenze let alone the other champions competing. He was still a little shy and closed off. Perhaps because he was not only competing with the other champions but his school head master continued to state not to make friends with the enemies though it wasn't exactly in Calvin's nature to not be unfriendly. " So far... My stay has been good. The host school has been welcoming." He didn't know what else to reply with.
Dancing clearly wasn't his strongest skill. He had hoped that dancing wouldn't be one of the tasks required for the games or else he was for sure going to finish last. " Let's try together." He said as the continued to dance somehow, Calvin even managed to lead the dance. " Want to get a drink?" He asked with a laugh.

Desiree smiled in thanks at Silvia’s compliment, although she didn’t need it to know her dress was exquisite. “Merci. It is a custom TW gown. She is a good friend of my mother’s.” She punctuated her last comment with a soft flip of her hair, always proud to brag about her fashion sense, as well as her family’s connections. After all, status was important, and her clothing was the best way to make sure everybody knew where she stood in the pecking order from the get go.
She nodded in response to Silvia’s question regarding the Beauxbatons balls. “Oui, but ours are a bit more… um… elegant,” she paused for a moment, trying to find the best word to describe it, without very evidently insulting the Italian decor. It was nice, she wouldn’t deny, but it could never compare with the sophistication of the French. Silvia seemed quite impressed, on the other hand, which told Desiree that her school must not have such high standards for their events. “Do you not have such soirées at Dahshur?” She was intrigued as to how other schools compared to Firenze, and to her own, having very little interaction with students from other schools before.
Silvia at least seemed to be enjoying her time at Firenze, at least from what she expressed. Desiree had to agree about the packed classrooms. Not the best way to finish her education, but it was not an opportunity she could miss, regardless of the impact on her studies. “I agree. Classes are a bit snug, but at least everyone is very welcoming.” She refrained from commenting on the castle. It would never compare to Beauxbatons in her eyes, but saying so just seemed a bit rude considering they were hosting her.
Sitting up a bit straighter in her seat, Desiree finally worked up the nerve to address the elephant in the room, the one topic she needed to address: the tournament. “Silvia, I did not get the opportunity earlier, but I would like to thank you for your… assistance in the first task.” She moved a bit closer to Silvia, hoping to avoid anybody overhearing their conversation. “It was very generous and helpful.” She ended it there for now, waiting to see how Silvia would respond. Would she be expecting a reciprocation? Would she use it against her somehow? She seemed like a nice girl, but one could never be too sure in such competitions.

It sounded like Desiree's mother personally knew at least one designer. Was that the industry her parents were in? That suited the image of an upper-class French family Silvia had in her mind. "Is your mother a fashion designer, too?" she asked, wondering what sort of wonders could be found in Desiree's wardrobe if that was indeed the case.
'Elegant' was probably the correct term for the social gatherings held at Beauxbatons, although Silvia had never witnessed one. What Firenze organized here was just fine for her, although it was more flashy than elegant. "I have only been at Dahshur for about a month before they rounded up all the older students and sent us here," she joked, although she was glad of the opportunity to participate in the tournament. The education back at the pyramid would have been better suited for her aspiring Curse Breaker needs, and the inability to study Dark Arts continued to bother her. Still, knowing Hogwarts students would be hearing of her success at Dodeca more than made up for it. "I studied at Hogwarts before, and Salem before that, and Selveira before that," the blonde explained. She supposed Firenze was now added to the list of all her schools - even though she wasn't officially enrolled here, it felt almost like an exchange program.
The Italians were indeed very welcoming. Silvia would have preferred some of them to be less so, in fact - if Ares' attentions counted as him being welcoming. She refrained from mentioning that, and the conversation quickly moved on.
She had expected Desiree to eventually bring up their interaction during the first task, and had a response ready. "Don't mention it, I'm just glad the watch helped. I don't think all three objects were equally useful - it was just luck that I chose one that was so powerful." From chatting with the other champions, she gathered that the mirror was supposed to show the location of the items they were after. What the necklace did was still a bit of a mystery - warn about nearby creatures, perhaps? Certainly not as good as freezing said creatures in time. "Did you want to switch the items back, to have the necklace as a keepsake?" The champions had been told that none of the items would retain their enchantments after the task, but they were still beautifully made. Silvia had no preference for which item she wanted to keep - both the necklace and the watch would evoke the same memories.
