HOUSE ELF CAFE
House-Elf rights have evolved over the past decade tremendously. The Ministry now reports that approximately 48% of House-Elves earn a wage, though the Ministry is still working on a basic wage for them. Not all of them receive enough to be a sustainable wage for a person, the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures stated. But earning any wage is a huge difference from even twenty years ago.
There are still many wizards who push back, wishing to stay in more traditional ways in the care of their House-Elves in both wage and treatment. They continue to push back and call for reform back to the old ways.
A new shop in Hogsmeade has popped up and has only angered the traditionalists even more: a House-Elf Cafe. Many witches and wizards are used to House-Elves preparing and serving their food. However, at this cafe which employs only House-Elves, they get paid just as any normal servers would at a regular cafe and even have a profit sharing plan with the employees. Unfortunately the owners are a pair of witches as House-Elves aren't allowed to own businesses yet, but this is a step in the right direction. The owners have stated that if things change, they would gladly sell it to one of their employees.
House-Elves are also often customers at the establishment, as this humble reporter has witnessed. The clientele is a sea of various wizarding beings from wizards themselves to House-Elves, vampires, hags and more. If you're looking to visit yourself, they are located on Second Street in Hogsmeade village and are open Tuesday - Saturday.
