euphemia 'effie' weatherwax
Birthday: March 27, 2012
Blood Status: Half-blood
Location of Residence: London, England
School: None yet, will attend Hogwarts
House: Future Ravenclaw
Appearance:
Three Characteristics You Think You Are: Inventive, observant, persistent
Three Characteristics Others Think You Are: Inquisitive, devious, mouthy
Three Random Facts:
• Euphemia hates her full name and prefers being called Effie.
• She mostly learned about magic from her squib aunt, who didn't really know all that much and had to make some facts up to deal with the child's endless interrogations. Her aunt's husband, a Muggle, was also occasionally subject to questioning and tended to borrow magical lore from folklore and fairytales to sate Effie's curiosity. Therefore, her knowledge about the magical world is a mix of correct and incorrect information.
• Most of the kids in her neighbourhood think she is an oddball and shun her. There are several reasons for it. Mostly it's due to Effie being homeschooled and thus not attending the local school - an outsider by default. Owning a pet toad and taking it for walks nearly every day might have something to do with it as well, and strange fashion choices (an attempt to imitate a witchy style without really knowing wizarding fashions) don't help either.
Aspirations:
• To make friends at Hogwarts and explore the magical world with them;
• To become an expert Alchemist and make a Philosopher's Stone;
• To convince her aunt and uncle to get her a second pet - a black cat;
Opinion:
• The Sorting Scarf. The what? It's supposed to be a talking hat, not a scarf! How do they even know the students get sorted the same way as with the hat? What if generations of students will end up in the wrong house from now on?
• Muggles. They're alright, although so unbelievably oblivious. Effie doesn't mind their culture and even appreciates a lot of their inventions but she wouldn't want to live among Muggles and do some boring non-magical job.
• Alchemy. Can't wait to start studying it! Hopefully, the Hogwarts library will provide enough literature to research the subject without a teacher's help.
• Clubs. She'll join a few, if there are good ones. Should make it easier to find friends.
• Quidditch. Sounds like a fun sport. The whole idea of flying on a broom seems so fitting to the magical world. Effie is excited to excel at it.
Family:
Ruth Duke | aunt, legal guardian | born 1986
A squib born into the Weatherwax family, she was sent off to a Muggle school while her brother attended Hogwarts. Later, she was encouraged to live in the non-magical society and find a regular job, which she did. Ruth had only been married to her Muggle husband for a year when her brother and sister-in-law died. As the closest living relative, she agreed to become Euphemia's guardian and raised the girl as best she could, even homeschooling her to avoid public instances of underage magic.
Wyatt Duke | uncle | born 1971
Just a regular lower middle-class Muggle, Wyatt only learned about magic after agreeing to adopt his wife's niece. He's not a huge fan - mostly due to Effie's tendency to create small rainclouds within the house when she is especially agitated, which soaks the furniture and requires a lot of cleaning up. Nonetheless, he is a good father figure to the girl and hopes she will do well in the magical world.
Margot Weatherwax, née Payne | mother | deceased
Thomas Weatherwax | father | deceased
Both of Effie's parents were talented in magic and curious about its limits. They were keen on experimenting with various spells and potions, always trying to invent new spells or improve existing ones. One of their experiments went wrong when Effie was two years old, leaving her an orphan. She doesn't remember her parents but has inherited their curiosity and the need to test boundaries.
Roleplay Example:
Eager to try out his newest purchase - a Fanged Frisbee - Don was headed for the courtyard when he noticed a Knut just lying on the floor. He stooped to pick it up and was instantly met with a sickening sensation of being pulled through space by his stomach. There was no way to let go of the coin, it felt as though his fingers got glued around it. It was similar to a swing ride at an amusement park, only far less enjoyable as he hadn't been expecting it. When the unpleasant trip was over, the first year found himself sprawled on the ground in semi-darkness.
He stood up, startled to see trees surrounding him. Where was he? Well, obviously in a forest - he wasn't daft - but what forest? Surely not the Forbidden one on the Hogwarts grounds. There were werewolves in those woods! Or so Aiden had insisted the last time Domhnall pondered sneaking off to explore the forest.
"Great prank, bro!" he called out, hoping that whoever it was that brought him here would step out from behind some tree and they could just laugh about it. But nobody answered. "Riiiiight..." Perhaps this was one of the more advanced multi-step jokes and this was just the first part. Oh, well. Don shrugged and began walking, curious to see what other traps were set for him. This must be some older student's work, too. Magic that made you travel from one place to another was difficult to perform, they had learned about it.
"Anybody here? What am I supposed to do?" His hollering didn't get any response, except for an eerie echo. Was today April first? He had lost track of time, but perhaps the wizarding world had some insane traditions for April Fool's...
Since the prankster still refused to answer, the Slytherin figured he was just expected to keep walking. Only in what direction? He pulled out his wand. "Lumos!" The spell worked on his first try, which was unusual for Don. If he was indeed in the Forbidden Forest, the goal was to find his way back to Hogwarts. So, how did one go about it?
He remembered reading somewhere that when lost in a wooded area, it was advisable to look at where moss grew on the trees - that would be the north side. Feeling like an expert survivalist, the boy examined the nearest oak only to find out that, apparently, the north was in every direction around the tree. Huh. Don wasn't too bummed, though. He didn't know in what direction he could find the castle, even if he'd figured out where north was.
For a while he just continued walking, illuminating his way with the tip of his wand. But soon he felt as though someone was watching him. His skin was dotted with goosebumps now. "Yo, who's there?" he tried again. "I warn you, I have a wand and I'm not afraid to use it!" And he wasn't bluffing. He had no fear of using his wand. He just didn't have much skill in doing it.
