Early December
It was a day like any other. Students were getting ready for dinner and were taking seats. Reino was among those students and never thought that what was about to happen would change his world. An owl came in which was odd, owls usually came with breakfast. But he didn't think much of it until a letter landed on his lap. He recognized the handwriting to be his mother's. Odd because it was usually dad who did these things. And even then they rarely wrote. Besides it was just a few more weeks until Christmas, they'd see each other then.
Regardless of the odd circumstances, he opened the letter. It read:
'Dear Reino,
We are sorry we can't come to tell you this in person, there is just so much we have to take care of right now. This noon we got informed by aurors that Yrsa was found dead along with her roommate on the pavement of their apartment. They say she had been dead before she fell and found traces of the killing curse on his wand. Please come home, we need you here.'
And it ended with details on the funeral. Reino couldn’t believe this. Was it a prank? No, this was definitely his mother’s handwriting. Then was this real? No it couldn’t be. Being a quiet guy who usually faded into the background meant nothing about Reino’s silence was odd. But he felt paralyzed as if any time someone could jump up and yell; ‘gotcha, it’s just a joke!’
He had to go and inform a teacher, asking permission to go home. But he felt nailed to his seat. His face was even more pale and avoided any emotion. The Gryffindor just stared blankly at his food. His thoughts raced Malcolm wasn’t just any roommate. Reino knew he was dating his sister. It seemed she never told their parents. It didn’t seem like Malcom to do such a thing. How much was there he didn’t know about her. Yrsa, his beloved sister. The one with the big goofy grin on her face, always flirting with every boy she saw. The one who would come to visit him after he got hurt during a Quidditch match. The sister who would always cheer him on, no matter how awkward he was. Was she really gone?
The dinner had finished up and Reino still hadn’t taken a single bite. Any sounds around him were just filtered out. He was entranced staring at his place when a sudden hand appeared on his shoulder, finally shaking him up. “Sorry, I- eh?” Why were his cheeks wet? It didn’t rain inside and there wasn’t a leak anywhere.

With Christmas and New Years approaching, Silvia found she wasn't really looking forward to the celebrations. She knew that after they passed, the exams would look to be much closer, and the pressure she felt about doing well would only increase. She preferred living on this side of the winter holidays, holding on to the feeling of having enough time to prepare for her future.
Another day close to completion, she was taking her time nibbling on the food in her plate and awaiting the evening mail. Recently, she had exchanged more letters than usual with her mother, all on the same subject - possible transfer to Dahshur. Iskra received a job offer in Egypt and was considering moving there; taking Silvia along would make sense if the fifth year truly wished to be a curse breaker - what would prepare her better than studying under a real pyramid? Only, Silvia was reluctant to leave Hogwarts. Despite her best efforts, she grew attached to some people here and she was doing quite well as a Quidditch player - the sport wasn't even played in Dahshur, so far as she knew. This had developed into quite a heated argument, mellowed only by the several days of waiting between each new correspondence.
Her mother's owl didn't make an appearance this evening. It rarely did - most of their letters were exchanged in the mornings. The only one to receive something seemed to be Reino. Silvia watched him read the letter, simply out of lack for anything else to do. It quickly became apparent that something was very wrong - her classmate's expression dropped, he looked to be close to tears. The tidings must have been pretty bad - Reino generally was much more put together. He wasn't exactly her friend, only a temmate and fellow Prefect, but she felt she had to make sure he was alright. It didn't seem like he was.
"Hey, Reino, are you okay?" she tried in a gentle tone, having shuffled closer to him. No response. She tried again. "Reino, what happened?" Again, it was as if he had gone deaf. And now she could actually see tears on his cheeks. Silvia reached out and touched his shoulder, trying to draw his attention. "What's wrong?" she inquired once more, not even bothering to ask if he was alright anymore.

The ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ occupied his mind. This didn’t make sense, was there a side of Malcom he didn’t know? Because his sister’s secret fiance wasn’t someone who would do this, would he? Was he one of those men jealous of his girlfriend’s success? Yrsa had always been successful in almost everything she tried.
The sounds of the great all were just murmurs in the distance. Even when his teammate was speaking to him her words didn’t reach him. Only the hand on his shoulder grabbed him back to reality. “Huh?” He blinked up sideways and immediately figured out what was going on. His parents always told him not to be a nuisance to anyone or make his family look bad. His body language had betrayed him and for once he had failed to keep composure. Now he was bothering someone with his problems.
But if he waved it off she might think he didn’t trust her as he couldn’t talk himself out of the fact that he had been crying. “I think I need to talk to the head of house after breakfast,” he mumbled and bit his lip. His mouth opened again but he couldn’t tell her what happened. If he said it at loud it’d feel as if he had accepted this as reality. SILVIA ODETTE STIRLING,

It didn't seem like Reino wanted to talk about whatever was in the letter, but his words about going to see their Head of House gave her some idea. That, and the crying. This had to be some sort of family tragedy, perhaps one of his loved-ones had an accident and needed to be hospitalized. Or worse...
She had little experience in consoling people, especially when she lacked the details of what exactly had occurred. But the memories of her father's accident and how it felt to find out about it were still vivid in her mind, and she could sympathize with Reino.
"Of course. Would you like me to go with you?" His vision had to be quite blurry from all the tears, he'd need to dry them in order to find his way. The blonde glanced at the end of the hall, trying to see if the professor in question was there. "Actually, I don't see him at the High Table, so he might be in his office right now."
She reached out and pulled a napkin holder from the middle of their table to right in front of Reino. Just in case he needed something to soak up the extra moisture from around his eyes.

Reino knew it was only a matter of time before the news got out and everyone knew. Especially as it happened in such a horrific way. He should be the first to inform his surroundings. But he couldn't. Saying it out loud made her death real. Even then it was not like he knew Silvia that well. Did he even know anyone well at all? It had always been Yrsa who he opened up to.
When the older Gryffindor asked him if he’d like her to go with him, the blonde nodded. “Thank you,” he tried to stay polite against all odds. He wasn’t sure if he would be able to make sense of his words if he even made it to the head’s office. “Oh… Then… We wait?” Reino sounded unsure. He didn’t want to be an inconvenience. His grandpa always said that was the worst thing a child could be. Reino just wanted to blend into the background without bothering others with his existence.
His teeth grinded together in frustration as it seemed too late for that. He definitely disturbed Silvia from her peaceful morning routine. Worst of all were the tears that were definitely showing on his eyelids. So far for being strong and hard to read. He glanced blankly at the napkin holder. Reaching out would be to admit he’d lost the battle over his emotions. How odd… Often he had trouble realizing how he felt but when the feelings came they were raw and heavy. SILVIA ODETTE STIRLING ,
