Summer 2024
School was out for the summer holiday and Dustin could feel the excitement throughout his friends. It was different for him, however, since he would not see his Muggle school friends next year. Having to tell them he was going away to a boarding school had been hard but necessary. Really it was all he could say as he couldn't tell them he was going to go learn magic at Hogwarts. The Statue of Secrecy, or whatever it was, had been pretty clear on the no talking about magic thing after all.
Regardless he was now home and ready for summer adventures, which mostly involved finding fireflies and frogs. Packing a backpack with snacks, water, and jars for whatever bugs he might find he came out of his room and headed outside into the morning light. The plan was to meet Ella right outside the front door so they could go exploring the fields and nearby forest. Tightening his bookbag straps he turned toward the door as it opened and smiled. "Ready to go exploring? I brought some snacks and water just in case we're out long."

Summer was bittersweet that year. While Ella was excited to be attending Hogwarts, particularly after hearing so much about the school from her parents and family friends over the years, she was sad to be leaving her muggle friends behind. They said they would keep in touch, but she knew it would be difficult, particularly with the Statute of Secrecy. She couldn’t exactly send owls to them while she was at school. At least she still had Dustin, she reasoned, so she wouldn’t be heading into Hogwarts completely alone.
That summer day, Ella was ready to focus on time with her brother, and, at least momentarily, forget about the friends she was leaving behind. She packed her backpack with a few necessities, primarily a bottle of water and a book, just in case. She met Dustin outside the house first thing in the morning, ready for a day of adventuring. “Ready,” she replied. “Sounds like we’re all set. Let’s go!” With that she skipped off, through their front yard, across a small dirt road, and into the neighbouring field. She didn’t actually know if the property was owned by anybody, but nobody had ever mentioned anything to them, so they’d just assumed it as their personal playground.
“What are you trying to catch today?” Ella asked Dustin curiously. She knew he enjoyed catching insects on their trips, and sometimes a frog or two. She had no issues with it as long as he did not hurt any of them. So far, Dustin always kept to their agreement. For herself, she simply enjoyed observing the various animals in their natural habitat, sometimes giving them a bit of food if they were approachable. Which, in Ella’s case, was more frequent than one would think.

"I hope so." While he was reasonably sure that they wouldn't really need a whole lot more than they had, he also couldn't help but worry they might. Not that there was much time to worry about it as Ella led the way, jogging to catch up as they left their front yard and cut across a dirt road. It was nice to be outside in the sunshine even as both of them entered the field. This was a great place for crickets and other such bugs that a frog might enjoy, should he be able to find one.
"Some fireflies, hopefully, or a frog. Though if we find a nice beetle or two, I wouldn't be upset either." There were some beetles that came in really vibrant colours and were fun to keep. A caterpillar might be nice too. To feed and watch it turn into a chrysalis before coming out of it a butterfly. It never ceased to amaze him that such a change happened that way as long as he didn't think too much about how the caterpillar turned into goo in that little pouch.
"Do you want to catch some fireflies too?" Usually, she didn't seem interested in catching anything, but he had brought an extra jar with holes poked in the cover if she changed her mind. Maybe they could find a pair of caterpillars to keep and watch grow and change together. Ella might like that, right? A pet like that could be released once they become butterflies too and live out in the garden. "Or maybe we can find some caterpillars and make a home for them, see them become butterflies and all."

Ella nodded in acknowledgement as Dustin listed out his plans for the day. Fireflies, frogs, beetles. All pretty typical for their adventures. She lifted her head up and closed her eyes for a moment, basking in the heat from the summer sun. There was absolutely nothing better than exploring the highlands with her twin brother to put her in a good mood. Dustin’s last idea for the day struck Ella out of her reverie, and she looked over at him with a bright smile and wide eyes full of wonder. “Really? That would be amazing.” She loved the idea of caring for their little caterpillars, and watching them transform into beautiful butterflies. “Let’s go find some catterpillars!” She announced decisively, skipping forward towards the forest.
From what she could recall, typically caterpillars liked to spend time in trees. Or at least that was where she remembered seeing them most frequently. The forest seemed like the perfect place to find some new insect friends to care for. Reaching the tree line, she waited for Dustin to catch up, before stepping into the shade of the trees. She looked around at the tree trunks as she passed, hoping for some sign of caterpillars, but couldn’t locate any as she walked deeper and deeper into the woods, checking back to make sure Dustin was still close by.
“Is there a common place to find them?” Ella asked, hoping Dustin would have more knowledge than she did. “I thought they liked trees, but there don’t seem to be any here.”

It seemed the butterfly idea was a hit which made him smile. Bugs and amphibians were great to catch and observe, but they weren't the same as finding a caterpillar. Watching it go from a worm to a chrysalis before becoming a butterfly was amazing. Even if knowing the caterpillar liquefied inside that chrysalis to reform was really disturbing, not something he was going to say aloud to ruin the fun. "Yeah, figured it would be a lot of fun to feed them and watch them do their change."
Happily he jogged to keep up with Ella as they both entered the forest. It was much cooler out of the sun, and he enjoyed the way it felt. It was like an adventure, and he pulled his backpack around to find the small butterfly book he had brought along. Best way to identify what caterpillars were safe to touch since some of the hairy ones gave people reactions. "There are supposed to be really pretty blue butterflies. See, they look like this."
Catching up to her, he held out the small open book to show slightly fuzzy-looking brown caterpillars with white stripes on one side. "It's called Purple Hairstreak. I guess because they are purple and maybe have hair?" According to the book, they could be found among Oak tree buds, which meant they might have to check tree branches for budding leaves. Did that mean they might have to climb a tree? Possibly. "Do you think we could find those, or maybe we should look on the ground? There have to be ground caterpillars too."
