Post by ELIZA MARIE CUNNINGHAM on Sept 28, 2023 11:45:18 GMT -5
The morning of September 1st was a little chaotic. Eliza delegated at Hogwarts to make sure everything would be ready for the students. The castle was clean, someone would meet the first years at the boats, and all of the carriages were being prepared to take the rest of the students up to the castle. All of the faculty were back at Hogwarts now after their various adventures in the world during the summer. Not everyone left, but it was fairly customary for most of the professors to go off doing things around the world. Maybe going on an adventure or otherwise just enjoying their time off away from teaching.
After that, Eliza went to Ava's house to pick up Blaise, as she had been looking after him. He really wanted to take the train with his friends rather than waiting in Hogsmeade but as Lottie wasn't a first year like him, she was perfectly fine walking to Hogwarts when it was time. Eliza thanked Ava for looking after him and brought him back home, where they grabbed his packed rucksack for the train trip. It didn't make any sense bringing his trunk on the train as Eliza could just bring it up to Hogwarts when she went back there after dropping him off at the train station.
They took the floo to Diagon Alley and then made their way to King's Cross where Eliza dropped him off. "Be good," she said, though he usually tended to be. She kissed him on the forehead. "Make sure to eat some lunch, but remember there's a feast tonight!"
"I know, I know, mum." Blaise looked a little embarrassed at her. She remembered when she was a first year going to Hogwarts the first time. Of course, it was different for Blaise. He had been there many times his whole life.
"I'll see you soon, I love you, have fun!" she said as she watched him get onto the train with his rucksack and then she left to go back to Hogsmeade and then Hogwarts.
The rest of the day was spent enjoying how quiet Hogwarts was for a few more hours. There were additional things to do in her office, and Eliza had lunch in the Great Hall with a couple of the faculty. Then it was biding their time until the students arrived.
Finally the second to seventh years arrived by carriage first and the whole castle got a lot louder. They all came in and found their seats at their respective House tables and were busy chatting about their summers and catching up with each other. By the time the first years arrived, all of the faculty were at the high table except for Morgan, who was waiting outside to explain things to the students. Not quite the stuffy McGonagall Eliza had, he would probably find a way to make the Sorting sound fun.
The first years entered the Great Hall and many were amazed at everything they saw around them, especially the ceiling, which was bewitched to look like the sky. It was a clear night so the stars could be seen overhead.
They all made their way to the front of the room with Morgan, who went into the side chamber. The first years looked forward to the stool in front, thinking they would probably have to sit there and be judged or something! Some of them were murmuring about what was going to happen.
The most common word murmurered throughout the room was 'scarf'. Professor Shepard was going to get the Sorting Scarf.
But when Morgan returned, he was not holding the Sorting Scarf, which was safely stored in Eliza's office. Instead, he was holding no other than the Sorting Hat. Gasps and loud murmurs erupted throughout the entire Great Hall, not just from the first years. Actually, a lot of the first years didn't even know why this was important, unless they had older siblings or their parents went to Hogwarts and told them it was a shame they no longer had the Sorting Hat.
Eliza raised her hand to quiet the room. "Yes, we do have the Sorting Hat back. Professor Devine and I rescued it a year ago and myself, Professor Channing and Professor Da Costa have been working all year to ensure that it is safe and still the same Sorting Hat. It has had quite the adventure! But I'm sure is happy to be back with us once more." Eliza smiled to the sea of faces before her. "And I believe the Sorting Hat has been working on a few words for us."
Morgan put the Hat on the stool and it came to life. Some of the first years gasped. Although actually, none of the students there had seen the Sorting Hat! Many knew about it, but it had been missing for 8 years, which meant that everyone there had been sorted by the Sorting Scarf.
"I've been on a journey, It's plain to see. But I am back, Your professors found me! The Scarf was good For a short time, But I can listen And make a good rhyme. So try me on And you will see Where you belong And where you'll be. You might be a Gryffindor. They're brave at heart With chivalry and more. You might be a Ravenclaw. Full of wit And creative awe. Or you might be a Hufflepuff. Loyal and true And very tough. Or you might be a Slytherin. Resourcefully cunning Loyal to their kin. So step right up Sit on the stool And try me on Me you can't fool. I will know where you truly belong. I'm the Sorting Hat, and this was my song!"
After that, the Hat got quiet and Morgan stepped up to announce the names of the first years.
"When I say your name, please sit on the stool. I will place the Hat on your head and you will be sorted into your House." Morgan lifted up the Hat from the stool so the students could sit on it before he would place it down on their head. They were so little, the Hat would likely slide over half of their head, as what usually happened as the Sorting Hat once belonged to a great man, Godric Gryffindor. He didn't have a particularly small head.
"Bakshi, Nisha!" Nisha walked up and Morgan put the Hat on her head. It didn't take long for it to announce the first sorting.
"Ravenclaw!"
Everyone clapped and cheered, but especially the Ravenclaws. She looked back at Morgan, not sure what to do. He nodded towards the Ravenclaw table and she scurried off to join her new friends. She was in the same house as her mother, Eliza noted.
"Burke, Dustin."
Dustin walked up and sat on the stool. It took a little bit of time, but the Hat eventually decided on "Slytherin!" Dustin looked back at his friends momentarily, probably hoping they would join in the same House as him, before going towards the Slytherin table. Of course, all their talk at Blaise's birthday about Gryffindor being the best House and all of them wanting to be in it probably didn't bode very well.
"Burke, Ella!" There sure were a lot of Burkes this year. Ella was only the second name, but Eliza thought they might end up being like the Weasleys of their time! Of course, only Eliza (and Hermione) knew that Dustin and Ella were actually Weasleys. Genetically anyway. It was a little complicated and Eliza and Hermione never got around to telling Phoebe or Harry or Ron about the people from an alternate universe. But it had been 12 years now since they discovered this. It seemed a little too late to bring it up now. But maybe eventually they would get everyone together to tell them. Not that it would really change anything for their lives anyway, though.
Ella sat on the stool and the Hat barely touched her head when it announced, "Gryffindor!"
"Burke, Thalia!"
Thalia walked up and sat on the stool confidently. At least it seemed that way since she wasn't a muggleborn who was confused or fearful of the things around her.
Eliza knew her mother and wasn't surprised at all when the Hat shouted "Slytherin!" She wouldn't hold it against her, but she hoped that she wouldn't cause any trouble for Blaise. Pansy had bullied Eliza all their years of school together and she didn't want the same thing to happen for Blaise. Of course, it was a different time now. The students didn't seem to care too much about blood purity. Although from what Eliza knew of what was coming... Maybe that would change.
"Cunningham, Blaise!"
Eliza leaned forward anxiously. She hoped that Blaise would get in Gryffindor but whatever it ended up being, she hoped that it would be a good House for him and that he would make good friends like Eliza had when she was in school.
After a short time, the Hat shouted, "Gryffindor!"
Eliza let out a sigh of relief and smiled brightly at him when Blaise looked up at her briefly before running off to the Gryffindor table with Ella. She was very glad that he was in the same House she had been in.
"Finnigan, Trent!"
Trent came up and Morgan placed the Hat on his head. It wasn't instant, but it did quickly decide on "Gryffindor!"
"Kapoor, Anushka!"
Anushka walked up and Morgan placed the Hat on her head after she sat on the stool. The Hat fairly quickly decided on "Hufflepuff!" which was different for her family. Her mother was Parvati and a Gryffindor. But families didn't always keep the same House from parent to child and that was completely fine.
"Kapoor, Sandeep!"
Sandeep sat on the stool and the Hat was placed on his head.
"Gryffindor!"
Two twins in two different Houses? Well that actually was as normal as normal could be for kids of a Patel. Padma and Parvati were twins and had been placed in different Houses as well.
"Shepard, Nova!"
Nova stepped up and got her father to help her onto the stool since it was a little high up for her. Then he placed the Hat on her head, making sure she was okay. There wasn't much time to think about it, though, because the Hat made a very quick decision.
"Hufflepuff!" She was too excited to think much about her dad as she ran off to the Hufflepuff table.
Weasley, Ezra!"
Finally it was the last one. The Weasleys were often last or nearly last. There were already so many at Hogwarts, Eliza would have to concentrate to count them all. It seemed like a lot to have 5 of them at Hogwarts at the same time during Eliza's years but the next generation Weasleys were far more than that.
Unfortunately Ron and Hermione weren't at Hogwarts. Hermione hadn't taught there for two decades now. So Eliza would have to be excited for Ezra on behalf of them. But she also was excited too. Ezra was definitely someone she watched grow up from a baby, since she was so close with Ron and Hermione. Eliza hadn't been very close with Ron during school, but after school once they started running the Order together, they became a lot closer.
The Hat only took a moment to decide for Ezra. "Gryffindor!"
Ezra was the last one to run off to the Gryffindor table.
Morgan then took the stool and the Hat off to the side chamber. The Hat would later be transported back to Eliza's office but right now was time to eat. A lot of people were very hungry and the House Elves worked very hard on the meal.
Eliza stepped up again to address everyone. "Welcome first years to your Houses. I hope you will enjoy your time and make lasting friendships. But now, I'm sure that we are all excited to eat! However, there are a few start of term notices to attend to."
A lot of these were things that the rest of the students knew already. However, the first years needed to hear it and everyone else probably needed reminding anyway.
"A reminder that the forest is forbidden to all students and the large willow should be avoided should you wish to keep your limbs. Classes will start tomorrow as today is Sunday, so make sure to get plenty of rest after the feast! But first... we must sing the Hogwarts song!"
There were quite a few groans from the students. Or was it hungry bellies?
"Feel free to sing at whatever tune you would like!"
Eliza gestured her hands like a conductor for a moment as she started the song and everyone else joined in too. Unfortunately as everyone sang at their own tune, it sounded completely chaotic and like nonsense. No one who walked in would know what they were singing at all.
Once everyone was finished at their own pace, Eliza clapped her hands and the food appeared on the plates in front of the staff and students. She walked back up to the high table to join the rest of the faculty at their meal. The students didn't notice where she went or even cared, though, as they were far more transfixed on the food in front of them as they dug in after waiting for so long.
Post by APINYA SAENGMAI on Sept 28, 2023 11:55:41 GMT -5
It was Apinya's last year at Hogwarts and it felt a little strange. She lost her best friend who went back to Xanadu. And her other friend seemed to be nowhere to be found. Or at least Apinya couldn't find him. She was feeling a little lost, but she did have some other friends. And she finally got to join the Quidditch team as a Beater. It was the only position she would ever play and was always taken up. But those students graduated now so it was free to take. She was excited to play, but just for fun. She wasn't the type who wanted to pursue it after Hogwarts.
Apinya was a little bored waiting for the first years to be sorted. The Sorting Hat was cool but she didn't really know much about it before. Her family was from Thailand, so everyone before her went to Xanadu and they didn't have something like that. It was cool, but not so much that everyone's reactions to it were warranted. It probably had something to do with stories they heard about it, she assumed.
She was glad when the food arrived and dug right in!
Post by ROXANNE VOGEL on Sept 28, 2023 11:58:53 GMT -5
Roxanne had been quite excited for the new term ever since she got her Prefect badge in the mail. It had been so exciting! Although she wasn't looking forward to the OWLs because she knew she would have to work extra, extra hard all year long to prepare for them. And also being a Prefect. She didn't know how others did it being on the Quidditch team, a Prefect, in various clubs and still managed to pass their classes and OWLs. She understood now why they could take less classes in their last two years of school so they could focus and do better on them since they were all so important. Though she wasn't sure she would only take the minimum. She probably would take a bit more than that. Maybe seven classes, but she would see.
Roxanne paid attention to the first years, especially the ones being sorted into her House. It looked like about five of them! She knew that she would have to show them to the common room and the dormitories after the feast so she tried to keep an eye on where they sat at their table so she could collect them afterwards in case they decided to wander off.
Once the food arrived, she grabbed some and put it on her plate while chatting with the people around her.
Post by LOTTIE CADWALLADER on Sept 28, 2023 12:02:08 GMT -5
Lottie was getting old! She was a third year now and had to choose some elective courses at the end of the previous year. She hoped that she made good choices but she wouldn't really know until she took the classes. Could she drop some if she didn't like them?
She watched the first years get sorted and especially was crossing her fingers for Blaise to get into Gryffindor too. They played together a lot when her mum was babysitting. Though now that wasn't necessary as they were at school together!
She was so glad when he got into Gryffindor and motioned for him to sit beside her. She also motioned for Ella too but she wasn't sure if Ella saw her.
"Congrats!" she said to her younger friend.
"Thanks," Blaise said excitedly.
There were far more people at the table to converse with, though, and they both got distracted by them.
Lottie clapped her hands together excitedly when the food arrived. "Yay! I'm starved," she said to no one in particular as she grabbed some mashed potatoes and put them on her plate before getting some pumpkin juice as well.
Post by DORIAN HUDSON on Sept 28, 2023 12:05:25 GMT -5
Dorian wasn't the youngest one anymore. He was a second year. He missed some of his friends during the summer, though he did write to them often and did get to visit with a couple of them. It wasn't the same as being with them every day, though. But he was very happy to see his family as well.
He watched as the students got sorted and welcomed the two Hufflepuffs when they joined their table. He was sitting near his friend Lia and chatted with her during the Sorting, a little quietly so they wouldn't get in trouble.
"How do you think this year will go? I hope you don't stress yourself out too much!" She always worried about doing well and Dorian usually had to help her take a step back and relax once in a while.
Later, the food arrived, and he got some of it onto his plate. Others were a lot more desperate, but Dorian just went at a normal pace. There was enough to go around.
Post by LEO RUTHERFORD on Sept 28, 2023 18:13:17 GMT -5
Leo was a fifth year. An OWL student. Not to mention, a prefect! He couldn't believe it. Really, truly couldn't believe it. But that meant that he got to help out all the new students in his house, and he was more than happy with that.
Then, he heard everyone start shouting about the Sorting Hat. Leo had been sorted when it was a scarf, even though his dads had told him about the Sorting Hat. He cheered and clapped with the rest of them, but he was excited to hear from the legendary figure of Hogwarts' Sorting Ceremonies.
He clapped and cheered whenever a Slytherin was announced. Some people associated the house with blood purity, but Leo was hoping to be one of the people who was clearly against it. Nothing wrong with a little ambition, in Leo's opinion. Especially when that meant wanting to help other people.
It was hard for Leo to figure out where the new Slytherin first years were, but if he was honest he was hoping that his smiling would be enough to cheer them. Besides, there were older prefects. Even if Leo wasn't the best at teaching people where landmarks were, he could still be a friendly face.
((open!))
Leo is blind. Don't expect him to notice your character waving at him.

Ella should have been excited. She should have been absolutely thrilled, beaming with joy, but she wasn’t. She’d cheered when Dustin had been sorted into Slytherin, but when the hat announced Gryffindor, not even giving her a chance to say much of anything, her heart had dropped. The pang had only increased when Thalia was also sorted into Slytherin, and she watched her cousin join her brother across the Great Hall. She knew they were still in the same school, and they would have classes together and could spend time together, but it wouldn’t be the same.
She joined her table, sitting close to Lottie who had waved her over, plastering a smile on her face to hide her disappointment. It did help that her house contained some familiar faces, particularly as a few first years she knew were sorted alongside her, but it didn’t fully ease the pain. She was actually quite happy when the food appeared, grabbing herself a healthy portion of Steak and Kidney pie, hoping people would be too distracted eating to notice her low mood.
Post by OCTAVIO DEVINE on Sept 28, 2023 23:03:32 GMT -5
Octavio smiled at some of the students reactions to the Sorting Hat being back to its rightful home. He and Eliza had risked their own safety to get it back and then Eliza had made absolutely sure it was safe for continued usage after being missing for eight years. He hoped the older students weren't too put out that they had been sorted by a Scarf when they had been first years while this batch of first years got to experience the Hat.
Post by THALIA BURKE on Sept 29, 2023 2:18:05 GMT -5
Thalia was elated to see Dustin sorted into Slytherin. She had been so certain that both of her cousins would go to some other house! It was still disappointing to watch Ella walk to the Gryffindor table, though. Hopefully, she wouldn't be too upset about it. Thalia's certainty about where she herself would be placed did not waver; the Hat did not take long in declaring her a Slytherin. She rushed off to join her new housemates. Others she knew were soon sorted and dispatched to their respective houses. Ezra went to join Ella, which made Thalia glad - at least her cousin wasn't getting completely separated from her peers.
Following the chaos of the school song, the lyrics of which were a complete mystery to Thalia - she just tried to guess them along the way while listening to those around her - she turned to Dustin. "I didn't expect you to be in Slytherin! I'm really glad, though. How do you feel about it?" She knew he wasn't used to being away from his twin sister, and being parted in this way might have made him uncomfortable.

The sorting hat was back in its rightful home and Nathaniel couldn't help but smile as it sang its song. He had been sorted by it himself. Something none of the current non first years could claim. He couldn't help but wonder where and what it had been used for all these years. As it was, it was yet another new school year and he was looking forward to seeing what would be happening. Especially with their headmistresses very own son among their students!

Effie was struggling with a feeling of envy. Last year, she had been looking forward to being sorted by the Hat - only to arrive at Hogwarts and find out that the ancient artefact was missing, and had been replaced by some scarf. But these new kids were getting the proper sorting, and would never have to doubt if the judgement of their qualities had been correct. She was suspicious of the scarf, even if she agreed with its decision to place her in Ravenclaw.
"They should do a re-sorting for all those who started at Hogwarts since the Hat went missing," she finally commented, audible to those sitting nearby. As the food appeared on the table, the second-year began loading her plate as she continued to ponder on the issue.
Post by DEAN FINNIGAN on Sept 29, 2023 2:36:08 GMT -5
Dean couldn't help but grin as his little brother was sent to the Gryffindor table. Of course, he had been almost sure of this outcome the whole time, but there had still been doubt. Dad was going to be proud, he knew.
"The Hat barely hesitated with you - well done!" He clapped the younger boy on the shoulder, even though he knew Trent had no real control over how long the decision might take. To Dean, it just meant that his sibling possessed all the right qualities and the Hat could feel it.
Post by KEN HAMADA on Sept 29, 2023 11:30:50 GMT -5
Well, here he was. His last start-of-term feast.
A new badge on his robes and the usual bored expression on his face, Ken watched the Sorting Ceremony and clapped appropriately when some of the little first year students were sorted into his house. Despite his apparent lack of enthusiasm, he felt rather sentimental that it was his last year at Hogwarts, so much so that he barely cared that the Sorting Hat was back. It was way cooler than the scarf, but like… whatever. His own sorting was way too long ago for him to envy the Hat-sortees.
Was it really his last year at school?
He glanced at the second year sitting nearby when she mentioned re-sorting. It was an interesting idea that kept his mind occupied and not get all weird with emotions. “D’you think you’ll be sorted into Ravenclaw again if they do a re-sorting?” he commented in reply to his younger housemate. “I think I lost all my wit and wisdom while I was here, so… goodbye Ravenclaw for me.”
Post by NICHA SAENGMAI on Sept 29, 2023 13:30:57 GMT -5
Nicha LOVED being back at school. As soon as she arrived in the Great Hall, she headed not for her own house table, but toward Gryffindor’s.
“PINNIE.” she hugged her older sister from behind, but only briefly, because Apinya was a great Beater and a little bit scary sometimes. Also, she probably hated the nickname she gave her? She couldn’t remember… “I’m gonna miss you so much when you leave Hogwarts. Hope you have the best last year ever.”
With that, Nicha bounced away to the Hufflepuff table where she belonged. “Hi everyone! Good summer?”
Post by DUSTIN BURKE on Sept 29, 2023 16:55:54 GMT -5
Here he was, finally standing in front of the Professor's table at Hogwarts. The whole room filled with older students and Professors all watching the first years be sorted. Not at all intimidating that. But when the Sorting Hat was set down, his eyes got big, and he gasped a little, having heard it was missing and having been anticipating the scarf. It actually opened up a mouth and began to speak, too, talking about a journey and being found before the house talk.
What a strange hat! With its newfound silence, he had almost forgotten that they would have to go up there one by one to get the hat put on their head. Luckily for him, he didn't actually have all that long to sweat it. Those were the perks of having a last name high up in the alphabet. When he was done and sitting at the Slytherin table, he blew out a breath of relief and looked up to see his sister. Gryffindor? A sinking feeling settled in his stomach, but he did his best to smile and clap for her.
At least Thalia was going to be in Slytherin too and it wasn't like he and Ella wouldn't see one another; they wouldn't be in the same house. It was just weird. They had never been separated from each other before. Well, at least not in this manner. When Thalia turned to him, he finally took his eyes off his sister across the room to smile faintly. "I didn't either. I don't mind being in Slytherin I just..." He looked across at Ella again. "I really thought Ella and I would be in the same house, you know?"
