((This was a 600 word post that I wrote 2 days ago and lost it. Then had to re-write it. Second time is never as good, though. ): ))
Blaise was very excited to start at Hogwarts. He convinced his mum to let him ride the train with his friends because he thought it would be a lot of fun. He didn't just want to walk over to Hogwarts from his home in Hogsmeade.
So they went to London to take the train back to Hogwarts. Blaise just took his rucksack because he didn't really need more than that. His mum would bring over everything else.
She was absolutely embarrassing him, though. They would see each other soon anyway! "Love you too, mum. Bye!" he yelled as he ran off towards the train.
He got onto the train and went from compartment to compartment to find his friends. He eventually found Ella, Trent, and Dustin and sat with them during the journey! Of course, a lot of them were going back and forth between compartments. He also saw Ezra a bunch and even said hi to Dean and his older friends for a moment. He even said hi to Dustin's cousin, but Dustin pulled him away to go back to their own compartment pretty quickly. Maybe he thought she wouldn't like someone with muggle grandparents.
Once they got to Hogsmeade, all the older students went away on the horseless carriages and Blaise got ushered with the other first years towards the boats. How exciting! He sat with Ella, Sandeep, and Nisha. Even though Blaise had been to Hogwarts all his life that he could remember, even he had to admit that this as quite the sight. Seeing the castle from the lake and in the dead of night when all the lights made the castle the only visible thing around them... It was so amazing.
Once they got inside, they waited outside the Great Hall. Eventually, Mr. Shepard greeted them and explained everything about the sorting. They would have to be in one of the four Hogwarts Houses their whole time there, yada yada. Blaise knew all about it. He hoped he would be in Gryffindor, just like all his friends!
When they got inside, he saw how the Great Hall was quite amazing, especially with all the people already in their seats. There were various empty spots on the benches, which would of course get filled pretty soon by all of the first years.
Blaise gasped when Professor Shepard introduced the Sorting Hat. How could his mum not tell him about it?! Maybe she wanted to keep it a surprise for him. After all her talk about how great it was before, teaching him about historical things of Hogwarts. But he had to admit that it was a nice surprise. He just was upset she didn't tell him first!
Blaise was pretty early on in the list, since his last name began with a C. He could tell his mum was watching extra closely and he gulped. Thankfully, the Hat decided to put him in Gryffindor, yay!
Blaise ran off towards the Gryffindor table and sat beside Ella. "Hey!" he said excitedly and then turned to watch the rest of the Sorting.
He had to admit to being a little down about Dustin's sorting. Slytherin? Blaise always heard not nice things about them, although his mum tried to be diplomatic and say that not everyone in Slytherin was bad. Blaise knew that Dustin wasn't, but now that meant they wouldn't be sharing a dorm or a common room, and couldn't hang out as much! Maybe he would have to sneak out at night to be with his friend. Blaise hoped that the rest of his friends would be in Gryffindor, though.
It turned out that most of them were - Ella, Ezra, Trent, Sandeep, and more. Of course, Dustin's mean cousin went to Slytherin too. That definitely made sense. Blaise's mum warned him about her because of her mum. Blaise knew that not everyone was exactly like their parents, but if she was in Slytherin, that probably wasn't a good sign. It was pretty rare for Slytherins and Gryffindors to get along, but he hoped that Dustin would be the exception! And if Thalia ended up being nice after all, he would be all for it.
After that, they sang a song. Blaise didn't really know the lyrics yet actually. But he did okay. And then the food was there! "Looks delicious!" he said to no one in particular. But then he addressed Ella. "Are you excited for classes tomorrow?" Blaise wasn't sure how excited he was. He didn't love the idea of schoolwork, but he also wanted to learn magic! He was around it all his life but never got to do anything himself so he was very excited to do that. Of course, he only could at Hogwarts, but he would be there most of his life for the next seven years anyway!

His daughter being a Hufflepuff made him clap, although Morgan tried to look like he wasn't going to be biased towards her. It was just happenstance that his daughter ended up in his house. If he were newer, he knew there would probably be some sort of question on how he'd treat her compared to everyone else. But he'd been a good professor to his step son and his niece and nephew.
Part of him wanted to say something to Nova or maybe Eliza. After all, her son was officially a Gryffindor now. But he didn't. He mostly just clapped and watched everything go on.
Post by NOVA SHEPARD on Sept 30, 2023 19:00:39 GMT -5
Nova had wanted to frown at being in a different house then her friends. Or some of her friends, anyway. Blaise was a Gryffindor which was just so cool. Trent was a Gryffindor too. Why couldn't one of her friends be int he same house as her? She frowned a little bit as she pushed stuff around on her plate. She should try talking to someone. After all, Hufflepuffs were supposed to be nice.

There was a new batch of kids, which could be good or bad. Xerxes hadn't really figured out how he felt about it. But the more people talked and got loud, the more he wished that he could just lean over and pet his fire crab. But for the first night at Hogwarts he'd agreed the crab would be in his room. The first time the baby students saw him, he'd be solo. Not that they'd deal with him for years.
But he looked over at his fellow professors and wasn't sure what to say. Should he congratulate the professors that had their kids sorted?

The experience of traveling and arriving at Hogwarts had been great, and in some ways, it was everything Ezra had expected and more; as such, he watched and looked at everything he could, he spoke to his friends, he took note of interesting places that were passed and was surprised by the Great Hall. It lived up to the name. The student body was present for the sorting ceremony, too, with House specific tables filled with interested eyes. Ezra didn't mind, he had always been fairly self-confident and didn't let others affect him too much, so knowing others were watching wasn't an issue.
Ezra waited patiently as others were sorted by the Sorting Hat, which had returned just in time for the next batch of First Years. There had been mention of a scarf in the past, which Ezra thought was odd, but no less weird than a talking hat when it came down to it. Nonetheless, the young Weasley smiled and clapped with each decision and allocation made; there was Ella, Blaise, Thalia, Dustin, Trent and others. He was surprised by some of the Houses, though was happy to see some friends in Gryffindor, because Ezra suspected that was where he would end up. Before it was his turn. The preamble was short, the decision pretty quick before the hat called out Gryffindor, and that was that.
Cool.
At prompting, Ezra walked over to the Gryffindor table, and joined his new House. He found a seat near some familiar faces, listened to the song and smiled wearily throughout the chaotic tradition, before it was time for the feast. Ezra found some morsels, plopped them onto his plate, and ate. He listened to the discussions around, before he turned to listen to Blaise asking Ella about classes for tomorrow. Maybe it was his imagination, but Ezra thought Ella seemed fairly quiet, given the times they had spoken in the past. Hopefully whatever was bothering her wouldn't for long, though maybe it was because she wasn't in Slytherin with Dustin? Or maybe the boat ride had made her ill? Or maybe she had been looking forward to the sorting scarf?
It was hard to say. Though, for his part, Ezra was looking forward to several classes, just not all of them.

Summer had passed by faster than Lia had expected, and already she found herself back at Hogwarts for another school year. This time was different, however. This time she knew what to expect, she knew what was going on, and she had friends. Her first year definitely hadn’t been easy. She had been very scared, worried she’d fail and be kicked out, worried she didn’t fit in and the whole thing was a mistake. Now? Well now at least she knew they wouldn’t kick her out just because she struggled a little bit in classes. She still felt like a fraud at times, the imposter syndrome wasn’t completely gone, but this year she wanted to focus more on her friends, instead of hiding in books trying to prove herself.
She watched in amazement as a Sorting Hat was brought out for the incoming first years, a talking Sorting Hat! She had already thought the scarf was impressive, but this hat could speak. Her mind was running on overdrive, trying to figure out how the magic worked on that hat, that she barely registered Dorian whispering to her. She turned at the sound, doing a double take when she realized that he actually had been speaking to her. “I won’t, promise.” She flashed him a smile to show him she appreciated his concern. “First year was just… a lot,” she laughed a bit at the understatement, but it was the best way to explain it.
“I hope this year will be a bit more chill. Maybe take more time to explore the castle! Maybe even… the grounds?” The last part was said with a bit of a conspiratorial tone, worried about voicing her thoughts out loud when so close to other students (possibly prefects) and professors. In reality, she was curious to explore the forbidden forest, and see why it was so forbidden. Not to mention she had heard something about a giant squid in the lake, and was hoping to investigate for herself. She’d spent most of her summer in the ocean near her home, either surfing or snorkeling, and was hoping to enjoy the body of water at the school more than she had the previous year.
It wasn’t much longer before the sorting was done, and the feast began. Lia grabbed herself bits and bobs from most of the plates, hoping to try a bit of everything. All the food was always so well done, she didn’t want to miss out. Plate filled, she turned back to Dorian, hoping to keep the conversation going. “What about you? You excited for the new term?”
Post by ROSE WEASLEY on Oct 1, 2023 0:48:45 GMT -5
Year Two. No longer was she the newbie. She was now older, wiser, and ready to face a new year at Hogwarts. Most importantly, it was the year she could finally try out for the house Quidditch team. Rose was pumped. She’d been practicing all summer long, and had even gotten her brother's old broom as a gift, so she was absolutely ready for the new term.
Joining her house table, she watched with great anticipation as the new first years entered. Even more so when they brought out the Sorting Hat. The Sorting Hat! Her mouth dropped at its appearance, her shock quickly being replaced with a small bit of envy and disappointment. She had heard about the Sorting Hat from her family growing up, but had not had the chance to be sorted by it considering it was still missing at the time. She felt she’d missed out, and almost wished she’d been one year younger so she could have experienced it, but at the same time she was happy with her house choice and wouldn’t want it changed either way. She made a mental note to ask Blaise and Ezra about the experience.
She cheered loudly when Blaise was sorted in Gryffindor, grinning brightly and flashing him a big thumbs up. She knew he’d join her house, the best house of course, but was proud when it was actualized. She watched as many other first years were sorted, recognizing a few and cheering when any were sorted into Gryffindor, and then came the most anticipated moment. Ezra walked up to the Sorting Hat, and Rose watched attentively, hoping for the result she expected. She was not disappointed, and cheered loudest as her step-brother walked over to their table. She waved him over, in case he wanted to sit near familiar faces.
As soon as the feast began, and they could speak freely, Rose leaned over and squeezed him in a tight side hug. “Welcome lil’ bro to the best house! I knew you would be a Gryffindor. It’s in our blood.” She let him go and ruffled his hair playfully, before helping herself to some mashed potatoes from a dish in front of her. "So, what was the Sorting Hat like? What did it say to you?" She addressed this to Ezra, but also to the other first years near her, wanting to hear all about it.
Keeping her eyes fixed on her food, Ella suddenly felt a prickling feeling, like she was being watched. She looked up, and caught Dustin’s eyes across the Great Hall. He looked as upset as she felt. She flashed him a quick smile, hoping to comfort him that she was okay, that they were okay, although she wasn’t sure how believable it would look considering how much her heart ached seeing both him and Thalia so far away.
Her attention was brought back to her own table when Blaise, sitting next to her, asked her a question. She felt an actual twinge of excitement at the thought of classes. Maybe if she focused on that, focused on the positive, she could ignore the hurt for the evening. At least until she was alone. She smiled at Blaise, hoping it was convincing, although the smile never quite reached her eyes. “Yeah, I can’t wait! You wouldn’t happen to know what classes we start with tomorrow, would you?” She wondered if maybe being the Headmistress's son came with some perks, including getting their timetable ahead of time.

Harrison watched as the Sorting Hat was brought out, his eyes wide, before he realized that would be a mystery he wouldn't need to solve. That was a little bit of a downer. He enjoyed exploring and solving things, but now the hat was back, which meant the scarf would probably end up somewhere else. Still, as the sorting ceremony began, Harrison was quick to offer claps and cheers, as he watched the new students go through the tradition he had last year.
It was going to be fun for them, for sure!
When the newly sorted Gryffindors arrived at the table, Harrison grinned and waved to them, but saw they were busy talking away. That was good, Harrison enjoyed chatting, so maybe he would find some similarly minded students in the Firsties - exciting stuff!
"Hey, Apinya," Harrison turned to the seventh year and tried to get her attention with his hand. "You're in the Gryffindor Quidditch team, right? I'm Harrison, I'm on the team, too, and I'm a Beater. We'll be working together!"
Harrison offered a big grin.
"It's good to meet you. And if you want to do training, so we can become an unstoppable pair, let me know!"
Any chance to train with an older, more experienced Quidditch student was a good idea, as far as Harrison was concerned...
Post by OCTAVIAN CORVUS on Oct 2, 2023 4:45:48 GMT -5
The Sorting Ceremony began in earnest, following the arrival at Hogwarts, and it was bittersweet for Octavian. It would be his last. Though, that also didn't perplex him too much, as he had accomplished what he had set out to do at the school, and was looking forward to concluding his final hurrah, as it was. He would be studying for N.E.W.T.s, eighteen of them no less, and had his work cut out for him; yet, Octavian felt confident, and would finish strong.
When the Sorting Hat was revealed, there was some surprise, as Octavian nodded and clapped. The old thing had been found. Yet, it was soon time for the newest First Years to be allocated their Houses, which was met by Octavian clapping and giving some respectable cheers. He smiled and watched the young students, recalling his own excitement and even uncertainty, during that time. Perhaps he could provide some guidance to those in Slytherin. But first, Octavian turned to Leo, who was nearby.
"Hello, Leo, how was your break?" he asked in a low voice, curious how the time away had been. "And if I had to guess, I would say our newest Slytherins appear determined. And we have some Burkes, no less. Compelling, yes?"
Yet, one of the First Years at the Slytherin table looked a little sullen, to which Octavian listened to the conversation between the pair - Thalia and Dustin. It seemed the boy, Dustin, was upset about not being in the same House as a relation - possibly a sister or cousin, by the name.
"If I may," Octavian said as he leaned closer and offered a well-meaning smile. "While it may seem upsetting to be separated now, and may do for a time yet, you also have the opportunity to become your own people in your own Houses. This ceremony is not for nothing, the decisions are for a reason, and you will both still share classes and many common areas... all that truly remains separate are sleeping dorms, which would be partitioned, regardless."
The goal was to prop up the new Slytherins, after all.
"Though, it seems you already have a supportive friend in Thalia. And between the pair of you, I feel confident saying that I believe you both have the capacity to become exemplary Slytherins. And if you ever feel you need someone to speak with, look no further than myself should you need senior support or advice. My name is Octavian, it is a pleasure to meet you both."
Perhaps a distraction would help.
"Out of curiosity, what subjects are you most looking forward to learning at Hogwarts?"
Post by THALIA BURKE on Oct 2, 2023 6:59:21 GMT -5
Thalia bit her lip, upset to see Dustin's discomfort. "I know. And I know that Ella also thought so. And I thought you two would be in the same house, too." Her selfish sense of relief about getting to have at least one of her cousins as a housemate was quickly fading. There had been months, even years for her to get used to the idea of being separated from them while at Hogwarts - she probably would have taken it better than either of the twins. "You'll still get to see her a bunch, though..." The house rivalry might get in the way at times, or so her mother had warned at least, but she didn't mention that.
Seeking to distract Dustin, she glanced at the food and was about to steer her conversation towards the obvious topic when an unfamiliar voice addressed them both. The first-year shifted her attention to the speaker, who turned out to be an older boy. She listened to his words in rapt attention, nodding in agreement by the end of the first part. This assurance had to convince Dustin that it wasn't such a big deal to be in a different house than Ella. It convinced Thalia, at least.
Suddenly aware that she was staring too much, the girl turned away and reached out for the cup next to her plate, intending to fill it with pumpkin juice. Only, the older boy happened to mention her name just as her fingers were about to close around the cup. Surprised, she turned to ask how he knew her name. Her hand failed to complete the action without guidance from her eyes and ended up knocking the cup over. Turning pink with embarrassment, she quickly picked it up before it could roll off the table. By then, she remembered that her full name had been called out during sorting - Octavian simply remembered it. That only served to make her face feel even hotter. "Oh, um-- nice to meet you, Octavian," she said in a small voice, without quite meeting the older boy's eyes.
After finally managing to pour some pumpkin juice for herself, she felt composed enough to re-enter the conversation with sufficient eloquence. "I'm excited to study Defence Against the Dark Arts and Charms. And History of Magic. Oh, and I'll also sign up for the duelling club. Maybe Quidditch, too, though I'm not sure yet."
Post by MAEVE THORNE on Oct 2, 2023 8:04:21 GMT -5
The most intriguing aspect of this sorting ceremony had been the Sorting Hat. So it had finally been retrieved, after depriving six or seven generations of Hogwarts students of a valuable interaction with an ancient artefact. Clearly, the search had not been active enough. Even while these thoughts occupied her mind, Maeve dutifully applauded all new Slytherins, at the same time noting some of the more renowned surnames among all fresh-first years. A bunch of Burkes, a Finnigan, a Shepard... and a yet another Weasley - those were getting sorted almost every year, it seemed, though it would have saved everyone a lot of time to just seat them at the Gryffindor table upon entering the Great Hall. The headmistress' son, too - Maeve had little doubt that he would be heavily favoured in all classes and activities.
Her lips remained sealed during the ordeal of the school song. Its lyrics were still a mystery to her, one she did not feel inclined to ever uncover. The only appealing thing about this performance was the relief that came once everyone was done singing. Maeve was half-convinced that quite a few of the students were trying to sound as awful as they possibly could, just to keep the ridiculous tradition entertaining. Or what passed for 'entertaining' to those who lacked any refinement in their sense of humour.
Once the various dishes and refreshments materialized on the tables, she picked some of the most appealing-looking foods - though with little interest. Her thoughts kept turning to Octavian, and her eyes were trying to do so as well; she caught herself glancing across the table, where he was chatting with Leo and the two Burkes. The very image of social grace, as he always appeared to be when interacting with people other than herself. It was strange to not see the Head Boy's badge pinned to his robe, but rather notice it in Hamada's possession. Although the momentary satisfaction about Octavian not being granted this prestige had made her smirk back at the train, she couldn't help thinking that Headmistress Cunningham did not pay any attention to the student body. Last term, she had given out Quidditch Captaincies to members at the top of the alphabetical list, ignoring seniority and achievements. Now, she granted a sarcastic, apathetic, and unapproachable - at least by comparison to some other Prefects - Ravenclaw the Head Boy role. What had been her thought process? Did she pick a name at random, without putting any effort into discovering the first thing about potential candidates' personalities? Or did she simply discriminate against Slytherin? True, Scorpius had been granted the badge in question a few years ago, but that may have been because Cunningham had worked with his father in the past. Maeve's suspicions about the Headmistress' upcoming favouritism towards her own son only grew stronger. The position needed someone more firm and reliable. Channing, perhaps. Or anyone else who was not anti-Slytherin, a Muggleborn-lover and a Muggleborn.
Not feeling particularly enticed by the food on her plate, the sixth-year watched the High Table for a while as she toyed with a fork. This school... It simply did not measure up, no matter what Father claimed. She felt an intense longing for Durmstrang and the orderly quality of education back there.

To say that Noa was excited was an understatement. He had thought he had done rather poorly for his exams the last term, but to his surprise, he had managed to pass enough to get through to the next year. His parents had been quite amused at all his fretting before the notice of him moving up had arrived. Now that he was back at school and listening to the song, and the sorting though, it was really hitting home.
He was a second year!
One would think that after years of being around magical items, he wasn’t short of them at home really, but he still found everything interesting. If he was being honest, Noa really wanted to get his hands on the Sorting Hat just to poke at all the charms and enchantments just to see how it all worked out.
The 2nd year had been zoning out a touch over the course of the sorting but he was pretty certain that there was about 2 new first years or something so he was excited for that at least. He wasn’t sure how he would be as a mentor but hey, he could try! He’s gotten a couple of trick steps memorized after all!

"Not bad." Leo answered. His break hadn't been terribly eventful, which was good when one considered that eventful in the magical world typically meant spells flying and cursed objects being discovered. It had been nice that the summer was somewhat relaxing, especially when Leo considered that he had to be studying for his OWLs this year.
He listened a little bit. Family names didn't mean much to Leo. There were tons of Rutherfords out there, after all, and he certainly wasn't like all of them even if he had picked up a few of his dads' mannerisms since being adopted a few years ago. He did appreciate the descriptions a little, though. He wasn't able to see on their faces how they felt about being Slytherins.
"Some of my best friends are Gryffindors." Leo added to the pro-Slytherin pep talk, "But I also made friends in this house. We get some classes with everyone."
At the mention of Charms, Leo excitedly stated, "Charms is my favorite!" He did always enjoy the class even if he still needed to practice every now and then.
Leo grinned about the possibility of Quidditch. Although he wasn't very good at playing the sport as it was at Hogwarts, he still loved listening to the games, even when it was rainy outside. "Our team is great! We won the championship last year. I heard the junior teams are fun to play on, too. I'm Leo, by the way."

The smile from Ella garnered one in return, even if he wasn't feeling very happy at the moment. When he had imagined being here at Hogwarts he had always thought it would be the both of them together in the same house. Making friends in the common room, doing homework together in that same space, and just being the pair they had always been. That seemed a bit more complicated to work out, seeing as they couldn't go into one another's common rooms.
As Ella looked away he did too. The choices had already been made, and there wasn't anything to be done about it so he would just have to make do. That's when he heard someone speaking and looked up, realizing the older Slytherin was actually talking to him. Why did the older boy sound like an old man? He didn't look like a vampire or like he was particularly old, but he spoke like someone's grampa. Did all older students sound like that?
"And the hat's never been wrong?" Dustin asked, feeling like a hat was just a hat. It couldn't know everything and likely didn't even know what it had done when separating them. Maybe it was because he wasn't as bold as Ella, a quieter type who followed along. But wouldn't that have meant Hufflepuff for him? Did that mean he was bad, somewhere deep? That was an unsettling thought and he wished all the more that he had been sorted into Ella's house.
"My cousin?" When he mentioned Thalia he looked a bit baffled. She was family; could family be a friend? He supposed maybe family could be lumped into the friend group too; he had just never thought of it like that. Octavian. While the older might think he was being helpful, Dustin didn't want to grow apart from his twin. And he didn't want to be an exemplary Slytherin, he knew what people said about his new house and he didn't want to be a bad guy.
"Oh...I guess Transfiguration. Or the creatures class; I like creatures." Talk of classes didn't dismiss the uneasy churning of his stomach as he picked up a bread roll to pick at. He did try and smile at the other Slytherin who mentioned having friends in Gryffindor. While he was worried about growing apart from his twin he had to keep positive that they would still see each other a lot. "I'm Dustin, it's nice to meet you. Is the Slytherin team the best?"
