It was morning when Blaise got a letter. Not even waiting until breakfast, the barn owl tapped on the window next to his dorms. Everyone else had already gone down so it was just Blaise alone in his dormitory. He opened it and got the letter. The owl didn't wait at all, it flew off right away.
Blaise took the letter and sat on the edge of his bed while he read it.
Blaise,
I can't keep what I'm feeling inside anymore. I need to talk to you.
Please meet me in the forest after dark. Don't tell anyone. I'll be waiting there for you.
Love, Ella xx
Blaise didn't even know how to react. He just sat there on the edge of his bed for a few minutes, reading over the note a few times. What on earth was this? It looked like a love letter, but... from Ella? They were friends but he never thought she had a crush on him or anything like that... And now she wanted to meet in secret? Was she expecting to kiss him or something? He wasn't sure if he was prepared for that. But he supposed he could get mentally prepared all day, since she wanted to meet him at night.
His hands started to get clammy, he was already nervous about this. If he would even go. But he had to! He couldn't let his friend be waiting in the forest all by herself. He wasn't even sure what he was going to say to her, but... he would have to go. Even if it was just to get her somewhere safe where they could talk instead.
The rest of the day went by both slowly and quickly. Blaise saw Ella in classes but she didn't even let on like anything was different. Was she holding onto this for a while? Maybe this was how she always acted and the only thing that changed was that she wanted to tell him? Blaise kept trying to look at her expressions and social cues to see if anything was different. But nope. She was just the same. He supposed she must be very good at hiding it.
That night, he was in his dorm getting ready when Ezra came in. Ella wasn't in the common room because she probably had already left. There were a lot of other people in the common room, though, so Blaise would have to rely on just slipping through the crowd and out the door. But he supposed he should tell Ezra where he was going. "I'm meeting Ella somewhere," he said. "Cover for me if anyone asks? Just say I'm not feeling well."
Blaise then left the letter on his bedside table and, wearing his cloak with the hood, snuck through the crowd. He didn't have his hood up yet, though, because that might seem suspicious.
Thankfully he fairly easily slipped through the common room and out the portrait hole. The journey to the Entrance Hall was very nerve-wracking, but he did that too. So much could have gone wrong but he had to get to Ella. He couldn't think that he was just ignoring her or leaving her to stay in the forest for Merlin knows how long.
Once he got out of the castle, he made a bee-line to the forest, hoping that no one was watching from the castle. Blaise made his way into the trees and found the main path.
Unfortunately he had no idea where she was, so he decided to walk along the main path until he found her. "Lumos," he said, glad that they had already learned that spell. It was very useful when sneaking out.
He walked along the path for five minutes until he saw a light off to the right, in an area that wasn't the path. That must be her, he thought, so he went into the trees and followed the light. It kept moving, though, and eventually just disappeared. And now he was lost.
There was a clearing up ahead, though, so he headed towards it, but he sorely regretted that instantly. It wasn't exactly empty. There was a huge - what only could be described as a congregation - of large spiders in the clearing. It wasn't their nest because there wasn't webbing all over. Only some from whatever they had done recently. Or maybe they relocated there. Blaise didn't know, but he did know that he wanted to get the heck out of there!
He turned to leave when he realized that the large spiders, which looked magical because they were so big (the largest being 3 ft wide, but most were 2 ft wide) but he had no idea what they were called, surrounded him on all sides. Blaise backed up and then ended up in the middle of the spider congregation, armed only with his wand, lumos, and the first year spells he had learned over the last few weeks, which was very little.
ELLA LILLY BURKEEZRA WEASLEY ((Ella you can say maybe she's coming back from the Library or something? Or up in her dorm? Some reason she's not around but then comes to the common room shortly after Blaise leaves so then Ezra can be shocked she's there and all that. If you guys want to post a couple of times discussing what's going on, feel free. I won't post again until you guys arrive.))

It was getting close to curfew, and Ella was just leaving the library, waving goodbye to her brother and cousin who had spent the evening studying with her. School hadn’t been their main priority, although they had gotten some school work done. Ella mainly enjoyed their study sessions as a way to spend time with them, since they didn’t share a common room. It had been weird at first being in separate houses, but she had gotten accustomed to it, and was starting to make some friends in her own house so she wasn’t so lonely past curfew.
Walking through the halls, making her way back to the common room, her thoughts drifted to one of those friends, Blaise. He’d been acting so odd that day. She’d mostly tried to ignore it, figuring it was probably all in her head, but sometimes she almost felt like he was watching her. She had felt that odd prickling feeling at the back of her neck most of the day. It was part of the reason why she had decided to spend most of her evening in the library, hoping to avoid him for a little bit and gather her thoughts. She hadn’t seen him since dinner, so obviously he wasn’t following her everywhere. Was she just being paranoid?
Reaching the portrait of the Fat Lady, she spoke the password and entered the common room, finding it filled with students as was usual for that time. She looked around, trying to find some familiar faces, particularly that of Blaise. Maybe if she just asked him what was up today, they could resolve whatever it was and move forward as normal. She was unable to spot him anywhere in the common room, but she did spot another friend, and one of his dorm mates, Ezra, and made her way over to him. “Hey Ezra!” She plopped herself down in a seat near him. “Would you happen to know where Blaise might be? Or maybe you know why he’s been acting so weird today? I’m not sure if I did something to offend him or…” She trailed off, raising her eyebrows in Ezra’s direction as she waited for his response, hoping he knew something

"I was going to ask you the same question," Ezra said, looking very confused at seeing Ella there without Blaise. "He said he was meeting you somewhere. Did he not show up?" Blaise went off to go find Ella and now Ella was there without him, so that couldn't have been it. And Blaise wasn't the type to get distracted by everything he passed by. He was a rather focused guy most of the time. Especially with how he was acting... It seemed rather important.
When Ella also looked confused about everything, Ezra stood up. "Come on, lets check his things for a clue to where he went. I'm worried now."
They went up the stairs towards the boys dormitories. Thankfully girls could go into the boys' rooms so she wouldn't be barred by a slide or something. Ezra didn't think it was very fair, but he also wasn't old enough to really understand why that rule was there.
They went into their room and walked straight towards Blaise's bed and things. Ezra started looking in his trunk, hoping he would see something that would help them find Blaise. He hoped he wasn't in trouble.
((It's on the bedside table. Also, kinda rushing this so we can get to the good stuff lol So feel free to fill in the blanks with their conversation in the common room.))

Ella blinked a few times at Ezra’s response, not expecting that in the slightest. “What? What are you- we never planned to meet anywhere, I haven’t seen him since dinner.” Had she forgotten some previously organized meeting between the two? Was that why he had been acting so odd around her that day? That didn’t seem like her, she usually wasn’t one to easily forget something like that, particularly when it involved a friend of hers.
She quickly followed Ezra up into the boys’ dormitory, any risk of breaking rules thrown to the back of her mind by the growing worry regarding Blaise’s current whereabouts. While Ezra busied himself looking in his trunk, Ella went straight to his side table, figuring that would be the next logical place to hide anything of note. She didn’t even have to open up any drawers before finding their answer. She quickly skimmed the letter found on top of the table, eyes widening as she saw the letter was written by… her? But she hadn’t written this letter. Blaise probably didn’t know that, however, and had gone ahead with this meeting.
“Ezra, come look. I think Blaise went to meet me, or well whoever wrote this, in the forbidden forest.” She explained as her eyes skimmed over the contents of the letter to make sure she hadn’t missed anything. Her eyes quickly flashed up to meet Ezra’s in a panic. “When did he leave? Do you think we can stop him? Or should we tell a professor? Or-”
Ezra stopped her questions. “There’s no time! He could be in danger out there!”
“But-” Ella started, but Ezra was already out the door, and there was no way she was letting both of those boys go into the Forbidden Forest alone. There was no telling what could happen to them. She quickly stuffed the letter in her pocket and rushed after Ezra.
--------------------------------------------
It was nothing short of a miracle that the two first years made it outside of the castle without getting caught. Having to dodge prefects, professors, and Peeves, was no easy feat when one was still getting accustomed to the maze that was Hogwarts. After having to duck into an alcove or an empty classroom a few times to avoid being spotted, the pair made it to the Entrance Hall and out onto the lawns. From there, it was a direct sprint towards the forest. Ella was still hoping they would be able to catch Blaise before he wandered into the forest itself, but it seemed luck was not on their side in that regard, as he was nowhere to be seen.
They arrived at the edge of the Forbidden Forest when Ella hesitated, pausing at the tree line. The air felt thicker through the trees, the darkness somehow denser, obscuring whatever creatures called it home. “Come on Ella!” Ezra beckoned, already a few steps into the forest before noticing her absence.
“I don’t know Ezra… the forest is forbidden for a reason. I really think we should find a professor and-” Her reasoning was interrupted by a loud scuffling sound coming from deeper in the forest, punctuated by a few familiar shouts. The two Gryffindors looked at each other, their concern mirrored on the other’s face. “Blaise.” And just like that, Ella’s hesitation faded, filled with a greater urgency to save her friend.
Running as fast as they could through the forest, legs and ankles getting nicked up by branches as they barrelled through the thick undergrowth, Ella and Ezra followed the sound of their friend’s voice punctuating the air every so often. After what simultaneously felt like forever and no time at all, Ella saw a figure up ahead, relief flooding her at the idea that they had finally found Blaise. That relief was short lived when she registered the other occupants of the clearing: acromantula.
Her brain quickly filtered through all her knowledge of acromantula. They were level XXXXX beasts, they most feared the basilisk, their venom was highly valued - nothing that could particularly help them in that moment. Except for the fact that… they could communicate. Ella’s eyes lit up as she tore into the clearing, wand raised and ready, almost barrelling into Blaise as she attempted to shield him with her body, coming face to face with the acromantula with a confidence not quite warranted for a first year’s skill level. Ezra tagged closely behind, coming to flank Blaise’s other side.
“Wait!” Ella shouted as loud as she could, hoping to get the attention of the acromantula. “We don’t mean any harm! Just let us go and…” She realized she didn’t have much to bargain with at that moment. “And we won’t cause any more trouble. Promise.” Trying to reason with them was possibly not the smartest plan, but perhaps, at the very least, it would buy them some time to slip away?
TAGGED: BLAISE CUNNINGHAM Notes: Hope this is okay! I liked the idea that Ella would try and be kind to the menacing spiders first lol

Ezra didn't want to get Blaise in trouble, but he knew that Ella had such good faith in the professors and that she wouldn't think of that part. He just had to rush her along to make sure that they could save Blaise so he wouldn't get in trouble for sneaking out and being in the forbidden forest! Of course, he also wasn't thinking straight and thinking that it wasn't a good place for some first years to be charging into. They barely knew any spells as it was!
It felt like it took forever to get out of the castle. Ezra hoped that Blaise would be okay. But they couldn't get caught sneaking out otherwise they wouldn't be any good to him at all.
It took a bit to find him and then Ella hesitated again. But once she saw Blaise, she didn't hesitate at all in jumping into danger in the clearing. Unfortunately Ezra did hesitate a little bit. He was just trying to assess the situation for a couple of seconds but then Ella was already in and he followed right after her.
They were on either side of Blaise now and Ella was trying to reason with the spiders.
Blaise was scared. He wasn't prepared for this at all! Was this a trick? Or did they already do something to Ella? "Tell me where Ella is and I won't -- I won't -- I won't hurt you." He was shaking, his voice was tremoring, and the spiders were doing what could only have been something like laughter. But they didn't laugh like normal wizards did.
"You? You're just a baby," one said.
Another to the right of him spoke up. "Yeah, what are you gonna do to us?"
Another from behind spoke, making Blaise turn around abruptly, pointing his wand at it. "Just a scared little boy here."
"I could do with a snack," another piped up, making Blaise turn around again.
Little did Blaise know, but these spiders were not adults. They were teenagers, a little like himself. But they were still very large spiders!
Blaise gulped. But then he heard something else from behind him. Before he could react, Ella was by his side. And then Ezra was by his other side.
"Ella! You're alive! And Ezra! How are you here too? I told you to-- Nevermind." It didn't matter now, they were all there together.
"It wasn't Ella who wrote the note. We're here to rescue you!" Ezra said again.
The spiders started to giggle, or something like it. But they also were starting to get bored of this little exchange and started to advance towards the kids.
"More snacks for us!" the hungry one said with what looked like a grin.

It seemed conversation was not the way forward, as the acromantula seemingly ignored Ella’s pleas and began to advance on the three first years crowded together, pinchers snapping in anticipation of the late night bite. She stepped back instinctively out of fear, her back pressing against her two friends. There was nowhere for them to go. They were surrounded. She mentally cursed herself for not telling a professor from the beginning. What were they thinking, heading into the forbidden forest alone? They were only first years. And now, now they were going to be spider food.
“Incendio!” Ella looked over at the sound of Ezra’s voice to see his wand pointed at the acromantula directly in front of him, the beast in question backing away at the fire that had begun at their feet. The fight for their lives had begun.
Turning back to face her own enemy, who had approached more than she anticipated in her momentary distraction, she ducked as a pair of pincers came towards her head, quickly moving herself away from its most dangerous weapon. Ella dodged another to her right as she turned to face her original attacker, casting “Locomotor Mortis” on it. She watched its many legs locked together, causing it to stumble as it struggled to free itself from the invisible restraints. “Oh I’m going to enjoy biting your head off,” the acromantula snarled from the ground, causing a chill to run up Ella’s spine, but she had no time to dwell on it.
Turning on her heel, she quickly assessed their current situation. Ezra was still casting Incendio at his original attacker, who was dodging the multitude of fires in an attempt to gain ground on the first year. Blaise was fighting his own spider, but did not seem to notice the enemy approaching from behind. “Blaise, watch you!” Ella shouted, immediately followed by her own “Incendio!” directed at the spider in an attempt to distract the beast from her friend.

Ezra had the brilliant idea of shooting fire at the spiders. That was great! Blaise wasn't very good at that spell, though, so he left that to Ezra and Ella.
He tried to think quickly - because that's all he could do if he wanted to survive - and cast a different spell at the spider that was advancing on him. "Pulsus!" he yelled with all his might. The spider was pushed away from him and scrambled to get back on its feet. It just looked annoyed but at least it was further away from Blaise.
Then Ella shouted at him and he turned around to see another one advancing on him. After all, there were only three of them and five spiders. Unfortunately they were outnumbered. "Pulsus!" he shot again, but his spell missed and hit the grass, not affecting it. "Flipendo!" Blaise tried instead and thankfully hit the spider before it got too close. It was very far from him now. But they needed to do a bit more than just scaring or pushing the spiders away. They kept advancing more and more...
It was then that they heard a large shout from the path nearby. It sounded like someone was yelling through the forest shouting "Oogie Boogie!"
Everyone in the clearing stopped in their tracks. Blaise tilted his head with a confused expression. A couple of spiders were more interested in the running person than the three in the clearing suddenly and scampered off to chase whoever it was.
That sucked for whoever was running through the forest in the middle of the night but at least it was 3 vs. 3 now. Blaise backed up, his back up against Ella and Ezra. Now if they could only fight off one each, they would be golden. They just needed to get away.

Ella heaved a sigh of relief as Blaise pushed back the spider advancing on him. She didn’t have much time to focus on him, however, as she noticed movement in her periphery, and dodged just as a spider lunged at her. “Stay still you little brat,” the spider snarled as it lunged forward once more. Ella jumped just out of its grasp.
It was then they heard some commotion happening on the path nearby. She swore she heard someone shouting “Oogie Boogie” as they ran by, but that couldn’t be right. She must have misheard. Regardless of what they were saying, it distracted enough of the spiders that they now had a fighting chance. 3 on 3 were much better odds than 5 on 3. Backing up as the spider, momentarily distracted, reared its attention back on her, she found herself once again flanked by her housemates.
Ella quickly glanced over at Ezra and Blaise, both looking as scared as she felt. Would they even make it out of there? She didn’t have much time to dwell on that as the spider in front of her lunged forward, its large pinchers aimed straight for her face. She quickly fell to her knees and scrambled away. Sneaking a peak to her right, she saw Ezra fighting off his own spider, his spells missing as the spider dodged the blasts of light. Ella scrambled to her feet and quickly spun around, trying to locate the spider after her, but spotted him too late as he pounced and pinned her to the ground. “What a nice little morsel you are,” the spider taunted, its pinchers clicking in celebration of its next meal. Ella struggled against its feet pinning her arms, and thus her wand, to the ground, as the spider’s head got closer, and closer.
With one last tug, using all of her strength, she managed to free her left hand, swinging it back and landing a punch square to the side of its head. It reeled back, releasing her just enough to free her wand arm. “Flippendo!” The spider went flying backwards off her as she scrambled back to her feet. The spider had landed on its back and was currently attempting to right itself, but Ella wasted no time. “Petrificus Totalus!” She channeled as much of her magical energy as she could in the spell, and watched as the spider became rigid and stopped moving.
She smiled in pride, but there was no time to celebrate. She didn’t know how long the spell would last, she was only a first year after all. They needed to capitalize on the moment to get away. Assessing the rest of the field, she noticed Blaise and Ezra fighting the only remaining spider together. She wasn’t sure where the third spider had gone, but she much preferred these odds. She pointed her wand at the spider, figuring it was currently distracted by the other two, and cast, “Pulsus!” causing the spider to fly sideways away from the boys. “Come on, we need to get out of here, now!” She yelled at the two and waved them towards her, hoping they would follow her lead out of the forest.

Blaise was happy that they got rid of a few spiders. Well, okay, they didn't actually get rid of them. Someone else did somehow. But they were still fighting strong!
"Flipendo!" he yelled at the spiders, shooting the spell multiple times. He often missed. He tried levitating one of the spiders as well, but all it did was lift one of the many arms for a moment before he lost his grip. These spiders were too big and the spell was harder the heavier the object was, he knew. He probably would have to work up to creatures nearly the size of himself.
He watched for a moment as Ezra wasn't faring too much better. But then he saw out of the corner of his eye, Ella besting her spider quite well! He had a bit more gusto and confidence suddenly, and shot Flipendo again at the spider in front of him. It landed! Yes! The spider flipped onto its back, but it would only give him a couple of moments before it would get back up again. But at that moment, they had a moment to get away. He saw Ella beckoning and he exchanged a look with Ezra quickly before they both ran over to her and followed her out of the forest.

Ella ran as fast as she could through the thick undergrowth of the forest, trying not to trip over roots protruding from the ground. She could hear movement behind her, and glanced back quickly to make sure it wasn’t the spiders chasing after them. She heaved a sigh of relief when she noticed it was just Blaise and Ezra following, glad at least they were all together. She wasn’t one hundred percent sure if they were heading in the right direction, but she had no intention of stopping at that moment. She just wanted to get them far enough away to deter the spiders from following. Or at least that’s what she hoped.
Ella wasn’t sure how long they were running, it felt like both forever and no time at all, until finally she started to see the forest thin. She beelined it towards the light, knowing at the very least that it would lead them outside of the forest and they could find their way back to the castle from there. It was only once she found herself back on school grounds, the castle looming in the distance, that Ella stopped, taking a moment to catch her breath.
Once her breathing had calmed and her heart rate had steadied, Ella turned to face the boys, more specifically Blaise, the adrenaline wearing off and making way for anger. “What were you thinking?” She yelled, hands on hips, staring down Blaise like a mother scolding a petulant child. “Going into the Forbidden Forest? Alone? And why in Merlin’s name would you think I would ask to meet in the forbidden forest of all places?” She took a beat to breathe, her anger fading slightly as she started to comprehend the weight of what had just happened to them. “Why didn’t you just talk to me when you got that note?”
