It was early morning when Ella headed down to the Great Hall for breakfast. After the events of the previous night, she had not gotten much sleep, and so decided to head down bright and early instead of tossing and turning for a few more hours. She could use the time alone to think. The previous night had been… eventful, to say the least. She was still a bit surprised they managed to get away unscathed. However, what baffled her even more was that letter.
Why would someone imitate her and send Blaise such a letter? Why would they want to lure him into the Forbidden Forest? Considering they hadn’t seen anyone else in the forest, Ella didn’t understand why they would want to lure Blaise into such an area. Other than to get him in trouble, or worse. If they didn’t want to talk to him, or didn’t want to attack him personally, what was the purpose? Ella’s only conclusion that whoever sent the letter had nefarious intentions, even if she didn’t fully understand the rationale.
That conclusion, however, wasn’t enough to calm her swirling thoughts as she sat at the Gryffindor table, absent-mindedly grabbing herself a bowl of oatmeal. Luckily the Great Hall was relatively empty due to the time, which allowed Ella to keep pondering this mystery undisturbed for the moment.

Last night had been quite the adventure and not in a good way. Blaise nearly died... and for what? Ella sent him a letter asking him to meet her in the forest. Or at least he thought it was her. He thought it was her handwriting! But he wasn't a handwriting expert or anything.
They were lucky that Ezra and Ella ended up talking and he told her about the letter. Otherwise, Blaise probably would have been a goner!
They went down to breakfast and unfortunately Ella wasn't in their dormitory. Well, Blaise thought it was unfortunate because he couldn't just go and talk to her about this without figuring out where she was. Was she still in her dorm? Was she already down at breakfast? But thankfully when he got into the Great Hall, he saw her already at the Gryffindor table.
Blaise took a seat beside her without saying anything and then pulled out the letter from his pocket in his robes. "I think we should look at this," he said. "Is this... Is it your handwriting?" He knew she didn't write it. He wouldn't accuse her of sending him to his death and then lying about he. He just hoped it was at least close. "Do you think it has any clues?" Maybe there was something in the words or maybe the parchment! Was it magical? Were there secrets inside? But he supposed maybe not. If the whole goal was to kill him, what would be the purpose of putting secret messages inside the letter with magic? Who would be left to reveal them?
There was food on the table in front of him, but Blaise didn't even look at it yet. He just sat turned to the left with his whole body, waiting for Ella's response and her smart brain to help figure out what really happened and why.

Ella jumped a little when Blaise sat next to her, snapping her out of her train of thoughts. Of all people, he would surely understand why she was a bit on edge that morning. “Yes, definitely,” she agreed as she reached out to grab the letter, hoping some answers could be found in its contents. Her eyes widened a bit when she read through the letter. The wording was not hers, but the handwriting… “It is, but I swear I didn’t write this!” She looked up at Blaise, eyes pleading for him to believe her. “I don’t know how they managed to copy my handwriting, but I would never ask you to meet me in the Forbidden Forest. It’s Forbidden for a reason."
She re-read the letter a few more times, hoping something would jump out to her, but she couldn’t see anything odd. She flipped the parchment over, looking to see if there was anything else that could be a clue. She even looked at it under her lit wand, wondering if maybe something would appear under the light, but couldn’t see anything new. "I-I don’t know…” she finally acquiesced, handing him back the letter. “It looks like a normal letter, other than the fact it is written in my handwriting, and I didn’t write it.” She made sure to emphasize this fact again, hoping Blaise didn’t blame her for the whole ordeal. She felt horribly guilty about the whole thing, even though technically she had nothing to do with any of it. “Maybe tonight we can go to the library and do some research? See if we can find a spell to detect traces of magic on it, or something?”
Ella felt utterly useless in that moment. They were only first years, their knowledge of magic was still quite minimal, but Ella wished she could do more to figure out this letter. One thought still nagged her, however, and this answer couldn’t be found in a book. “Do you know who would have sent this to you?”

Ella was a little jumpy but Blaise couldn't blame her. "Sorry," he said quietly. He didn't want to scare her. He was also probably a little jumpy too. The whole ordeal last night was just... a lot. He would be very happy never to see a spider again, even the small, normal ones.
"Merlin, how could someone do that?! I don't think there's a spell for it... But we don't know many spells," Blaise admitted. They were only first years after all. "Have you lost any of your notes recently?" Maybe someone stole them to copy her handwriting.
"I guess I should have realized. You'd never go in there." Blaise smiled a little. A little reprieve from everything that had happened. Ella would never ask to meet him in there, but what else was he to think? "But I couldn't ignore it, what if you were waiting for me there and in danger... Okay, maybe thinking what ifs really isn't helpful right now." No, it really wasn't. They had to think about the facts and hone in on the truth.
Blaise watched as Ella examined the parchment, first with her eyes and then with her wand. He completely ignored all the food on the table. He wasn't hungry. He was far more interested in what their conversation. Unfortunately, Ella didn't find anything helpful.
"Yes. Research!" he agreed. But what would they research? Ella would probably have some idea of where to start. Blaise had confidence in that, at least.
"Oh, umm..." That was a good question. "I hadn't thought of that, actually." Blaise rubbed the back of his neck, feeling a little embarrassed that he hadn't thought of the why just yet. "I don't know? Everyone's so nice here. I don't have a quarrel with anyone. Except maybe Thalia. I mean we don't really talk, but we're also not supposed to... Or do you think it was her mum? Making sure we don't talk ever? No, that's probably a little too extreme for a parent to do." Blaise was just thinking out loud at this point.
"Or do you think it's something about my mum? I mean, she has some enemies. I know that. Should I tell her about this?" Blaise didn't really want to tell his mum about it. It would turn into this big thing and she would take it over and he kind of wanted to figure it out with Ella. It seemed really personal to him. He didn't want to just run to his mum every time he had a problem. "Does it sound bad that I don't really want to?" He hoped he wasn't disappointing Ella or making her feel like he'd rather they're in danger than do the responsible thing.

Ella shook her head in response to Blaise’s questions about her handwriting, “Not that I know of, but it’s not impossible for someone to have slipped away a sample of my handwriting without me noticing. I do sometimes pass notes to Thalia in classes, perhaps someone found one of those?” It all just raised more questions for Ella. A spell would have been an easier way to perform such a trick, although she wasn’t sure how possible that was magically. Why would someone go through all the hassle of copying her handwriting?
“Why do you think they wrote the letter from me anyhow?” While Ella and Blaise were relatively close, she still couldn’t understand why she had been the one this person had impersonated. There were plenty of other people in his life whom he would’ve met in the forest, like Ezra, or Dustin, or Lottie, or any number of his friends. Blaise was not an unpopular guy. Why her? His concern for her safety, however, was quite sweet, and she found herself smiling a bit in spite of the circumstance.
When Thalia’s name was brought up, Ella was quite surprised. Blaise had a problem with her cousin? She’d never seen the two exchange so much as two words to one another. Ella shook her head at the thought that her cousin, or her aunt, could have done such a thing. “No way. I know Thalia, she wouldn’t do this. If she had a problem with you, she would tell you to your face. And why would my aunt care if you spoke to Thalia?”
The idea that it could be one of his mum’s enemies seemed much more likely to Ella, although she didn’t know much about the Headmistress’s personal feuds. While the goody two shoes in her wanted to let Eliza know as soon as possible about the events of the other night, she could understand Blaise’s apprehension. This wasn’t just their Headmistress, this was his mum. “Maybe we should do some research first. No need to bother her if it was just some prank by another student.” Not a funny prank, in Ella’s opinion, but perhaps it hadn’t meant to go as far as it did. “Better to have all the facts before we speak with her.” Yes, that was the best course of action, right? At least Ella convinced herself it was, partly for Blaise’s benefit, and partly because she was terrified of getting in trouble for being in the forest the previous night. She wanted to make sure it was a serious threat before going to any authority figure for help. No need to get in trouble over some other student’s lack of foresight.
