Dorian was in the basement, carrying a cake back from the Kitchens towards the Hufflepuff Common Room when someone came running past him, making him lose his balance. They were long gone but he stumbled and knocked into another student as the cake fell on the floor and got smooshed into the wall and was all over them as well. It was late too, so they weren't exactly supposed to be out at that time, or at least soon wouldn't be. It was nearly curfew.
"Look what you did!" Dorian exclaimed. He thought that she was the person to run past him at first. But then maybe it wasn't her? But she looked pretty guilty in that red and pink cake all on her robes. He took a smear off his own and rubbed it on her cheek. "Thalia, you're such a mess," he joked. It was a little funny, but his friends would be sore that he didn't get the cake. They were really looking to celebrate.
Dorian of course didn't have the sense to think about how in trouble they would be from stealing the cake and also making a huge mess! And they didn't know the cleaning spell. That was too advanced for them. Even though Thalia was the younger of the two, she probably would be the first one to come to her senses about the trouble they'd be in.

Thalia was quite reasonably indignant at finding herself splattered with cake from head to foot. Her attitude was not improved when Dorian pointed an accusing finger at her.
"It wasn't me! You bumped into me, you clumsy--" She stopped short of uttering an insult and instead looked ahead at where the running student had disappeared behind the corner. It wasn't even Dorian's fault, really - she'd spotted him getting jostled by the passing runner. The actual culprit got away, and the two if them were left in this sticky situation. "You're a mess, too," she observed, intending to sound amused and not quite succeeding - hints of irritation were still notable in her voice.
Should she go to the nearest bathroom and try to clean herself up, or just head to her dorm to replace the caked robe with a clean one? She didn't really want her peers to see her looking as though she'd been the victim of a deranged circus clown. Then she realized getting teased by her classmates might be the least of her problems. She was smeared in evidence of a stolen cake and the befouling of a hallway. This could mean a detention, and that would lead to an angry letter from her mom... and a look of disappointment from dad, which was worse than any scolding.
As if on cue, she heard footsteps approaching. "Quick, we hve to hide! If that's an adult or a Prefect, we're in trouble..." Thalia looked around frantically, searching for a likely cover.
