tag: ANGUS BAIRD date: feb 2025* (changeable, if you want a different date!)
With Valentines rolling up soon, Cedric had been feeling especially single. He had not really had anyone since Seb. His first love. Sometimes his heart still ached at the thought of him but he had not been able to get over having had to hurt a friend. In essence, choosing between friendships and love. It had been hard but he felt he had made the right choice.
In fact, he had moved on enough to agree to being set up on a blind date. He had been told nothing about the other guy except that he was close to his own age. He had talked his friend out of setting the thing up at Puddifoots. The thought that had made him shudder so instead they were to meet at the Three Broomsticks. A white rose in Cedrics hands indicated that he was the date Angus should be looking for.
His first ever serious relationship had ended in utter emotional turmoil – on Angus's end, that was. Before he had met Amos that day in Madam Puddifoot's, Angus hadn't even known he could be attracted to other males. Sadly, said male turned out to be a heartless, narcissistic prick who took him for granted and treated him like absolute garbage throughout their short relationship.
What was even more twisted that Angus had continued to harbor feelings for him even after he threw him out like a broken wand. But that had been two years ago. Since then, Angus had been on a few dates with some lovely ladies in between his employment at the Scottish Government. While the dates had been quite engaging, none of them had progressed beyond the restaurants at which they ate.
Angus wondered if this date would be any different as he entered the threshold of the Three Broomsticks, dressed in his suave black suit. In his hand was a pink rose, in accordance with their means to identify each other. Angus had to search the animated throngs of patrons before he spotted him, seated alone with a white rose in his hand.
Angus blinked, slightly surprised to recognize the former Hufflepuff who he believed to have been at least a year above him in their Hogwarts year.
“My, my, my...long time, no see, Cedric,” Angus said flirtatiously as he approached.

Cedrics mind kept jumping between fleeing or staying put. Obviously he stayed put. It would be too mean of him even if it had nothing to do with his mystery date and more to do with his nerves. And Cedric wasn't generally a mean person. So there he sat, his fingers idly twirling the rose. He was thankful he had gotten the thorns clipped off out of worry of accidentally piercing his date.
A man finally entered and Cedric was surprised to find that he recognized him. The other been a Ravenclaw two years below him though they had not had many reasons to speak. He blushed a little at the others flirtatious words. He was just glad his hands weren't clammy as he smiled at the other. "Angus Baird, I haven't seen you in a long while," Cedric said as he extended his hand for a handshake. He had no idea what to do here, really. He had never been on a blind date before.
Angus took care to keep an air confidence about him as he shook Cedric's hand. He recalled being a trembling, stuttering mess the day he had laid eyes on Amos for the first time; he certainly didn't want this date to have even a modicum of similarity to that day.
“I'm pretty sure we only exchanged glances a few times before you graduated,” Angus said whimsically as he took his seat across from Cedric and handed him his rose, “but you're looking pretty great yourself. What have you been up to since Hogwarts? I'm working within the Scottish Government's Magical Being and Beasts Rights Office.”
Angus wouldn't have been bragging if he had chosen to say this aloud, but the mentioned position had been anything but easy for him to achieve. The time-consuming studying and arduous tests he had to undergo had been challenging even for a former Ravenclaw – but in the end he had achieved his goal.
Ambition wasn't a trait exclusive to those belonging to Slytherin, after all. “You're looking quite dashing in that outfit, I must add,” Angus said with a playful wink.
He was momentarily surprised at his newfound confidence.

That sounded about right. A lot of Cedrics final year had centered around Sebby in some way. He blushed modestly as Angus complimented him. He didn't know about that and he didn't really know how to accept a compliment graciously and without looking awkward. So he focused on the question asked instead. "I have been pretty great - I live at Holt's and am an assistant wandmaker for Ollivander's Wand Shop."
He was personally very proud of his accomplishments thus far. Then he was being complimented again and his tongue was tied. "Oh thank you so much. I bought it special for this date," he blurted out without thinking. Was it painfully obvious that he actually had not been on a date in years? He hoped not.
Angus sighed wistfully. “Ah, the memories of my trip to a wand shop. It still feels like just yesterday I was purchasing my wand before my first year at Hogwarts. My parents and I had been on vacation in France a couple of weeks before our round trip back to Godric's Hollow, so we thought it would be memorable for me purchase my wand from one of the local stores there. I remember how astonished the owner was that the wand that chose me possessed such a rare core...”
He would omit that said core happened to be Basilisk Horn – the very core that was within the wand of Hogwarts founder and fellow parselmouth, Salazar Slytherin. He certainly wouldn't risk disturbing Cedric with any unwonted details concerning his unique ability. “But let's not discuss wands and careers over empty bellies,” he said as he retrieved one of the menus. “What looks good? Feel free to order whatever you want – it's all my treat!”
A true gentleman wasn't shy with the sickles in his wallet.

Cedric smiled genuinely when Angus spoke about having picked out his wand. "Aw, I was just about to ask what core astonished that shop owner," Cedric teased flirtily when Angus followed up with a statement about not discussing wands and careers while their bellies lay empty. So far, so good. At least on his end. He had no idea what might be on Angus Bairds mind about him. Cedric felt he wasn't very good at this.
He looked over the menu, looking for something that would both delight him and not cost Angus half an arm. Luckily, there were plenty of options. He glanced over his menu at Angus. He had heard plenty of rumours about the other and it had been widely talked about how the other was a parselmouth. Cedric did not personally have a problem with that though knew he was likely in a small majority of people who felt that way about the ability.
Another thing he had heard which he knew to also be quite true was that Angus had a basilisk. "How have things been for you since leaving Hogwarts besides getting into a government position?"
“How have things been for me? Busy,” he chuckled. “My position entails a lot of paperwork and confrontation to those abusing magical creatures. Some wizarding families still have yet to learn that House Elves are no less living beings than you and I.”
The abuse of the docile imps Angus felt was an issue not addressed enough in their community. In his opinion, said treatment was on the same level of those who verbally assaulted Muggle-borns. He wouldn't say more regarding the subject, though; this was a date, not an intense discussion.
“But other than that, things have been relatively peaceful for me...since my old boyfriend and I split up."
