[Get lost in the forbidden forest together (or meet in there accidentally)]
How had he come to be out here in the Forbidden Forest? Dustin had no answer for that. See, he didn't usually do this sort of thing on his own, preferring to go on adventures with his sister or his new friends. But today? Today he found himself sneaking off into the woods to try and find bugs just like he did at home. Only he was curious about magical ones and if he could find some to identify and raise.
Now, it might be a Saturday with most of the older students at Hogsmeade and maybe a bit more lax monitoring by Professors, but he was still worried about being caught. So he was moving from tree to tree to hopefully avoid being seen as he searched for logs to push or rocks to turn over in his search for insects. Hearing footsteps behind him made panic grip him, and, not thinking, he grabbed two huge handfuls of wet leaves, turned toward the sound and threw both clumps of them at a girl before he could stop himself.
Gaping at the other, a Ravenclaw that he remembered from their sorting and classes together, he, for a moment, was horrified. "Sorry, sorry, I thought, there was crunching and I just reacted, I'm really sorry!" Followed by a moment of clarity. What was she doing out here too? And if she had been so quiet, that meant she had been sneaking into the forest too. So maybe it was okay that he had tossed leaves, even if they would not have been useful against any creature. "Wait...how come you're out here?"
She’d finally done it. She’d finally gotten enough courage to go into the place called the Forbidden Forest. What a silly name for a forest filled with magical beasts and potion ingredients. The professors really shouldn’t have mentioned the potion ingredients if they’d wanted her to stay out. It was their fault. Had they said it was illegal or to protect the beasts in the forest, she wouldn’t have thought about going in. Probably.
Wand firmly hand, she made her way through the forest sure that she’d been sneaky enough not to get caught. Just as a wave of confidence hit she was hit by something else. Something wet. “A-ish!” Stopping in her tracks she spit one out of her mouth and looked at the familiar face in front of her. His rushed apology was forgotten when he asked her why she was out there.
“I’m looking for things I can use for my exper… potions.” Getting caught in the forest was one thing, doing random experiments to satisfy her curiosity was something else. She didn’t know if he was one of those weird wizards with an allergy to muggle stuff. The middle of the forest didn't seem like the best place to find out. “But I’m not the only one out here. What’re YOU doing out here? I heard your head of house makes you clean the toilets with your toothbrush if you lose points. That would be enough to keep me out of here.” She scrunched up her nose. She didn’t think the Charms professor would really do that, but she’d heard some fifth years say it. Just in case, she’d sent an owl to her halmeoni begging for extras.

Had she been about to say experiments? Well, regardless, it seemed she was out here for somewhat similar reasons. Well, alright, maybe not similar, but he had been collecting potion ingredients incidentally as he searched for interesting insects. That way, if asked, he could simply hold up the ingredients if questioned about what he had been doing. A lot easier to say he'd been in the greenhouses rather than in the forest, at least to him. The jars for insects easily fit in his pockets, so they could have easily been slipped by professors or prefects.
"Oh, well, um...honestly, I was out here looking for magical insects, but...all I've found are potions stuff." He'd even found some naturally growing dittany and had been careful not to disturb their roots much when harvesting and not taking all of it. It was just disappointing that he hadn't found some strange bug to keep and nurture. He liked seeing them grow and become something else, which is why he was excited about taking care of magical creatures in his third year. "Is that a thing? I don't think I've seen anyone having to do that, but uh...as long as she doesn't know, I guess I'm safe from finding out."
Relaxing now that he was sure she was out here without permission, too, he picked up the herbology basket he had borrowed with the little clippings. There was even one specimen he had dug out and put into a pot to have one of his own. He just needed to figure out where to grow it since Slytherin was cold, damp, and not exactly sunny. "I haven't seen any insects or creatures, but it's kind of spooky out here, isn't it? Kinda...way too quiet for a forest."
“You might not have found the bugs you’re looking for, but you won the lottery for potion ingredients, all fresh and wild. My halmeoni says forests are free apothecaries. She told me all the best plants are the wild ones.” Back in Korea, her parents grew their own plants, but every spring and fall she had been dragged into the mountains to look for wild growing ones. If she got in caught, she would remind them of that before they decided on her punishment.
“I hope it’s not true. I like my toothbrush free of toilet water.” Throwing away a perfectly good toothbrush, no matter how many extras she had, was a waste – bad for the planet too. Thinking about it too much made her nervous. Insuk was just happy Professor Channing wasn’t her house leader.
“I think I was I was too focused on not getting caught, but I never really thought about how quiet it was.” Maybe her heart had been pounding too loud for her to notice. Whatever the reason, she had clearly failed at being sneaky. Blaming her racing heart was a lot less embarrassing. “Now that I listen for it, it does sound quiet. What do you think is in here?” She hoped it was something exciting, just not the kind that would eat her. Insuk thought she'd been pretty brave going into the forest. She just wasn't get eaten brave, even if seeing the insides of a monster did sound kind of fun.
