Ilona was on a mission that beautiful Saturday in February, and for once that mission did not involve books or academia at all. She was on the hunt for a friend, or a family member more likely. The past few days she had noticed something off about Lewis in the classes they shared. Perhaps he hid it well from the rest of their classmates, but Ilona could tell his typical cheerfulness was not truly authentic. She knew Lewis better than most, and could tell something was wrong, she just wasn’t sure what. Unfortunately she hadn’t been able to talk to him before or after classes. He always seemed to slip away before she could flag him down. So that afternoon she was determined to locate him.
She thought it would be easy. She’d just pop over near the Hufflepuff common room entrance and ask a student to get him for her. Unfortunately he wasn’t there. She then began her search around the school, thinking of all the possible places he could be. The Kitchens or the Great Hall for a snack, the Quidditch Pitch for practice, the Courtyard with friends (although it was a bit cold to be outside that day), until she finally ended up at the Greenhouses.
Spotting the familiar shape of her pack mate, she sauntered in casually, as if she hadn’t just navigated the entire campus trying to locate him. “School work or personal study?” She asked, nodding towards the plant to which he was tending. Better to ease into the conversation instead of coming in guns blazing, no matter how worried she may be.

Until this year his mission to see if the pack had a future at Hogwarts had been a success. Several kids from the pack had started to join in. This year however nothing really seemed to go well. Now Lewis was older and understood more of the world, he was starting to have some doubts. Mainly about his position as the next set pack leader. That was not all; ever since Love became a prefect and the Quidditch captain, Lewis had been seeing his best friend less and less. While he had hoped that after introducing him to the pack last summer would have only brought them closer. On top of all that, classes this year seemed to be much harder than previous years.
Which was why he had come here alone, he had to get this stuff right on the exam. Besides, he actually enjoyed learning about the plants. He had not expected anyone to pop in let alone Ilona from the pack. The Hufflepuff shortly glanced up from the plant and shrugged. “Little bit of both. I can’t believe I got this wrong last time. I never get anything wrong during Herbology.” It was his only ace class besides maybe potions. Knowing what grew in the wild was important for survival of the pack. “Didn’t know you were this much into Herbology, at least not to visit the green houses in your free time,” he said with a half smile as he clapped his dirty hands to get some of the soil off them.

Ilona could tell even then that something was on Lewis’s mind. His smile didn’t quite reach his eyes and he looked tired, even when working on one of his favourite class subjects. She shook her head as he expressed surprise at her visit to the Greenhouses. “I’m not. I actually came here to find you.” She pulled out a nearby stool and took a seat near Lewis, taking advantage of the task to avoid answering the next obvious question: why she had been looking for Lewis.
“I-uh I just realized we hadn’t really spoken in a bit, what with classes being so busy and all that…” she trailed off, avoiding making eye contact as she struggled with how to broach the subject of her worries. She had never been the best with the whole talking-about-emotions thing, preferring academic discourse, but this was Lewis. He had been there for her during some of the most difficult moments of her life, and so she could do this for him. “So… how have you been?”

She had come to look for him? Sure they didn’t spend as much time together at Hogwarts as they did in the pack. They both had different groups of friends. Lewis moved so she could easily sit next to him, inviting her to join if she wanted. “Well let me just finish this up and we can do something fun,” he smiled, thinking that was why she was here. But she quickly revealed she just came to talk. Which was completely fine and allowed him to continue. “Things have been busy indeed. I never expected the change from fourth to fifth year to be this big. I’m kind of worried about exams, how about you? How is Henri doing? He also restarted his studies after everything.” Lewis felt bad because he should have checked in better. It was his responsibility as the son of the pack leader. The realization brought the expression of guilt on his face. “Busy,” he admitted. Lewis was struggling keeping up with Quidditch and school. His beater performance wasn’t what it used to be. And he really missed his best friend now Love spend more time with other people. ILONA KYLLI ROWLE ,

Exams. So that’s what it was. Or at least that’s what Lewis wanted her to believe. Ilona’s eyebrows knit together slightly as she watched his expressions change from smiling, to worry, to guilt. It couldn’t just be that. OWLs could definitely be a contributing factor - even she was feeling the pressure - but there was something more. “Um yeah, they have been pushing us particularly hard in classes this year, but I’m sure we can handle the exams, we are both good students.” She had never remembered Lewis stressing this much about his school work. A bit of stress was normal, but Lewis always just seemed so relaxed, like he was just enjoying the ride of life.
His concern regarding Thoman was definitely more on brand for him. He always took good care of the pack at school. She knew he sometimes put a bit of pressure on himself since his father was the leader. Perhaps that’s what was causing such a change in him, some kind of pressure regarding a new pack member at the school. “Thoman seems to be adjusting well to school life,” she reassured him, hoping perhaps it would help. “He has made some friends and is doing well in classes. I wouldn’t worry too much about him.” Moving closer, she placed a hand on his shoulder, hoping to get more of his attention. He just seemed so scattered, like his mind was in a million places at once.
“Lewis, how are you doing?” She emphasized it this time, making sure to make eye contact. “I know we don’t spend much time together at school, but I’m worried about you. Something seems… off.” She hesitated, not knowing exactly how to describe this feeling she had. She could feel something was wrong, but couldn’t get a sense of what.

Lewis smiled at Ilona. He actually wasn’t that great of a student. It took him a lot of time and hard work to catch up with his classmates. Until now he had no trouble with school work but changes in his body and interests made it hard to focus. Some classes like potions and herbology were easier. But History was going to end him. He was no good at remembering stuff he was not interested in. “If I pass my O.W.L.S. I’m dropping History next term. I can’t with that subject. All the names and dates, urgh-” He groaned and shook his head.
After Love stayed over at the pack, Lewis started to worry he might not be cut to become a werewolf himself. Love believed he would make a great pack leader yet if that were true why was Love the one picked for both prefect and quidditch captain? It wasn’t fair because Love already was a werewolf, he naturally had it in him. A lot of people were naturally drawn to the shorter Hufflepuff too.
He smiled as they talked about the pack. “I’m so glad to see you, Henri, Lisa and Tomas at school. It makes me hopeful for the future of the pack. With proper education we can bring in more money to survive. My father’s choice to send this generation to school was controversial but I think he made the right choice,” he said proudly but there was something more in his eyes. Almost as if they were begging her to agree with him. He wanted to hear confirmation that his family was leading the pack in the right direction.
“It’s just a bit of a shame I’ll have to drop whatever career I build the moment my mum and dad die,” he mumbled to himself and sighed. Hopefully his parents would live till he was reaching his forties and he had enough time to build a life. But the average life expectancy in the pack was sixty years, those of the leaders even less because they were always on the forefront of the battle if they were attacked by werewolf hunters or rival packs.
He looked up at the hand on his shoulder, noticing how much it comforted him. “Maybe it’s my voice that’s finally dropping,” he joked, biting his lip as he realized she wasn’t here for jokes but genuinely concerned about him. Well yes puberty was finally fully raging through his body and with it came new revelations. What kind of man did he want to be? He briefly looked away, not sure how to say this. “Do you… Do you think they’ll still accept me if I don’t become a werewolf?” He whispered. As a child he had always viewed becoming a werewolf through rose tinted glasses. But seeing Henri and Love struggle with their gift made him reconsider. “Do you know if animagi can choose the animal they turn into?” He was hinting at looking for alternatives.
