As a seventh-year, Maeve had very little free time. She still held a grudge against her father for making her quit the Quidditch team, but she was starting to realise that there might not have been enough time to practice as rigorously as last term. What with the addition of the secret study group, which was growing faster than she had anticipated, her every waking hour was bound by a tight schedule. The Dueling Club was less important to her now that she had a similar activity to organize for a select few. She had reduced the club meetings from weekly to bi-weekly and ignored the members' complaints.
Aiming for a simple topic, she decided to have everyone improve their defensive skills. Most of the club's activities focused on offence, which left a lot of members with a major weakness. Maeve even went so far as to obtain special training equipment. Orbs the size of bowling balls hovered in the air along the wall, spaced about two meters from each other, all with a black dot at the centre that would release spells when activated.
"Today, we will be practicing the Shield Charm. The orbs you see are enchanted to cast the Knockback Jinx at any person standing directly in front of them. You need to be six meters away to activate them, but you can get closer if you want - or move further away, to give yourself more time to react. Once activated, they will produce attacks every fifteen seconds." There had been an option of randomized intervals, but she had decided it would be too difficult for most. "The green orbs are the weakest, and should be used by beginners. The yellow ones are stronger - those who already have some experience with shielding can use them. The red orbs produce quite intense spells, and will require a strong shield. If you are hit, the orb will cease casting for a full minute." That had to be enough time for anyone to get back to their feet and refocus on the task. "If anyone hasn't learned the Shield Charm yet, the incantation is Protego. You might want to practice it a little before standing in front of an orb. Feel free to start."

Annabelle looked around as she looked at Maeve as she looked at her and then at the orbs. Her eyes grew big as she saw the orbs. Annabelle took a deep breath and got ready to cast the needed spell. She made sure to be ready to activate them and then use the shield spell to defend herself against the orbs attacks. Annabelle repeated the spell to herself a few times, she did that until she felt like she could actually cast the spell without worried. She then glanced around as she wondered if the others were ready as she was. Then Annabelle glanced over at Maeve as she nodded to her. "Not sure about the others but I am ready. I am completely sure about that! I just practiced the spell for a while. So as far as I am concerned we can start!"

In his second year, Don had done pretty well in the dueling tournament. His Shield Charm proved strong enough to deflect attacks from older students; that memory boosted his confidence to this day.
Deciding that he was able to handle the most advanced attacks, he strode over to the nearest red orb. As he approached, the black dot at its centre began to glow. After some seconds, it shot a jet of purple light at him.
"Protego!" His shield shimmered into existence, and the light collided with it... completely shattering it. The impact sent Don flying backward. He stumbled back up to his feet, his face burning with embarrassment. Picking a weaker orb would be a smart move, but he didn't want to give up so easily. Brushing himself off, he decided to stay in place - further away from the orb - and wait for another attack.

Thalia had found that her offensive spells were pretty powerful. She learned them easily and rarely struggled to cast successfully. She was just that talented, it seemed. Her defence, however, required improvements - most of her shields failed to block attacks sent her way. It would be good to patch up that gap in her dueling skills.
The second-year considered working with a yellow sphere, but watching her housemate pick a red one and fail miserably made her opt for the lowest difficulty. She could always switch to a yellow sphere if the green one proved too simple.
Warily, she stepped closer to a green sphere and held her wand in position to cast. As the flash of light shot at her, she incanted "Protego!" Her shield shuddered when the jinx hit it, but deflected it successfully. Yes! Overjoyed, she let her concentration slip. The next jinx was already coming her way as the shield jutted out. She leapt aside, barely evading the attack.

The duelling club has always a favourite past time for the young Ravenclaw simply because it was one of the best ways he had to release any tensions built up over the school year. It was one avenue he was always happy to participate despite being as tried as ever due to other commitments. Of course, sharing those commitments wouldn’t be the most ideal in such a public place.
He gave Maeve a slight nod as he listen attentively to what she had to say and admire at what was organised for today’s duelling club meeting. A slight sense of disappointment in learning that today’s session would focus on the shield charm however she was more than impressed at the setup and what she had prepared.
Making his way over to the red orbs, Levi stood there with his wand at the ready anticipating the first spell come flying toward him. He wouldn’t know what to expect but he was getting ready for the worse none the less.

Jarod looked at Maeve and listened to her. Then he got ready to practice defense. Jarod looked around as he tried to figure out which one to work with. He tried to figure which one should he practice with first. Jarod figured that the easiest ones were better. So he got ready and walked over to the easy ones. "Protego" Jarod said as it got activated and attacked him. The shield worked which he was glad about but then he had to move out of the way as it crashed around him and he needed to create a new one but he didn't manage to do so, which was wh6 he moved out of the way.

Rose felt quite confident in that day’s dueling challenge, considering her performance in her first ever dueling tournament as a first year. No she had not won, but she had definitely held her own against a fourth year for longer than most expected, casting several successful shield charms. She debated between the red and the yellow orbs, but decided to begin with the easier of the two, particularly considering it was still early in the school year. She still had to dust off her dueling skills after a few months off school.
Just as she made her way over to a yellow orb, she heard her friend’s voice further down the room, and looked over just in time to see Don knocked backwards from the orb’s spell. She winced at the sight, chuckling a bit as she watched him stand up and return to the same orb. It was not surprising for the Slytherin to dig his heels in when facing such a challenge. “You've got this, Don!” She yelled over in encouragement with a bright smile, before finally approaching her own orb.
She squared up about 6 feet away from it, waiting for but a moment before a purple light shot towards her. “Protego!” Her shield charm went up immediately and easily deflected the spell. With a smile she moved forward two feet, ready to test her reflexes. “Protego!” Her next shield was successful in its casting, but not quite as successful in deflecting. While the shield went up, her timing was off and she found herself pushed back away from the orb. Regaining her footing, she huffed in annoyance at her failure and moved back to her previous position, ready to try again.
Post by LILLIAN POTTER on Apr 19, 2024 19:15:41 GMT -5
It had almost been two months since Lillian had arrived at Hogwarts, and she was still struggling a bit to find her place within the school. Sure she was friendly with a few people, and she was doing decently in classes so far, but she hadn’t truly found yet where she belonged. In the hopes of meeting more like-minded individuals, she had decided to join the Dueling Club. So far, Defense Against the Dark Arts was her favourite class, and she found herself excelling in the subject matter. Some may say genetics had a part in that, considering who her father was, but Lillian wasn’t sure if blood relation could have an impact on one's academic aptitude.
The shield charm was a particularly useful spell, in Lillian’s opinion, so she was glad to be learning it ahead of actual duels. Having never cast it before, she decided to stay on the side of the room to start, practicing casting the spell on her own before facing one of the orbs. “Protego…. Protego…. Protego…” It took a few attempts before she was able to produce an actual shield, and a few more after that for it to remain more than a few seconds. Once she felt she could at least produce a rudimentary shield, she made her way over to the Green orbs, joining an older Hufflepuff and a Slytherin.
Slowly moving closer to the sphere, wand at the ready, she watched and waited until a jet of light shot towards her. “Protego!” The spell rebounded off her shield without issue, only causing the slightest of tremors at the impact. Lillian almost clenched her chest in relief, her heart rate still elevated and adrenaline pumping from the anticipation. She had little time to celebrate, however, as the next flash came quicker than she expected, sending her flying backwards, landing flat on her butt a few feet away.
Post by TYNAN Ó SEIGHIN on Apr 20, 2024 4:56:58 GMT -5
While a lot of the dueling club members had complained about the change to their meeting hours there was one who didn't mind at all. Tynan was already in a place where he simply wanted to quit altogether. His plan to drop out after OWLs slowly becoming solidified now that they were a month into school. The werewolf was beginning to realize he didn't have an aptitude for school and was ready to not be here anymore. Heck. He was ready to make friends with people in a similar place to him, and no one here was even slightly close.
Sourly he had stood at the back of the group listening as the seventh year gave them instruction on what they were doing. At the very least it was them against an orb so he didn't need to worry about pairing up. Likely the best action plan since he had no friends here and no one liked him. When they were freed to begin practicing he stood in front of the orb producing the yellow more advanced stage, not wanting to start at the baby stage. Stepping at the furthest range he waited for the jinx to be released. His wand came up sharp and angry like he himself was to produce a shield charm well before the spell reached him. "Protego!"

Romy was sad that Duelling Club meetings were reduced to once every two weeks. She had grown to like their activities, as well as become more confident in her skills. But she did not complain, as she understood that Maeve must have faced a huge increase in workload as a seventh year and Head Girl. She missed seeing the former Seeker in Quidditch games too - what an inspiring player she was!
Figuring that enchanted orbs shooting jinxes would be less intimidating than real people, the third year moved to stand in front of a yellow orb. She had some experience casting the Shield Charm in previous terms, but felt that she was not prepared to cast a shield strong enough to defend herself against intense attack. Standing a distance away first to not activate the orb, she practised casting the charm by herself. Once she could reassure herself that she had not lost the ability to cast a shield over the summer break, she took a deep breath and moved to stand six meters before her orb. “Protego!” she said confidently, and conjured a magical shield that deflected the orb’s Knockback Jinx. Wondering if she should try maintaining this shield for the next attack, she saw from the corner of her eye another student fly backwards from the impact of the jinx.
“Are you okay?” Jogging away from her orb to deactivate it, she spoke in a soft voice to avoid attracting attention and extended a hand to help the Gryffindor stand up. As she had seen her cast the charm successfully the first time, she added encouragingly, “That was an awesome shield just now though! I’m Romy.”

Now that he received encouragement from Rose, there was no way Don would switch to a weaker orb. What if she saw it and thought he lacked tenacity? He risked shifting his eyes to her briefly. The first shield she produced was spectacular, though the second one formed just a fraction of a second too late. Like a true Gryffindor, she went right back to the starting spot close to the orb. Should he do the same?
The fourth-year looked back at his own orb, which was charging up another attack. His minute of reprieve was almost up... Okay, maybe he could return to within six feet of it once his shield succeeded at a longer distance. Don prepared to cast, the current distance giving him more time to react. "Protego!" he called at the first sight of the oncoming purple flash. His shield, more powerful this time, deflected the spell - although just barely. The impact felt jarring; he was sure this shield would not withstand any other offence - it was all fissured now. Quickly extinguishing it, the Slytherin readied his wand for another round.
"Protego!" Another shield sprung to life just in time, and for a moment Don was certain it would hold-- but the Knockback Jinx fractured it, pushing the boy backward another yard. The distance was lesser than last time, though, and he managed to stay on his feet. Now he had another minute to recover. This time, he stepped closer to the orb, stopping at the proximity of some ten feet.

Lillian winced as she landed on her butt some few feet away from her original casting position, rubbing at her back as she straightened up. She barely had time to process what had happened when an older student rushed over, making sure she was okay. She was a bit embarrassed that someone else had noticed her fumble, but at least this girl seemed quite nice. “Yeah, I’m fine. Thanks,” she responded as she grabbed the girl’s extended hand and got back up to her feet.
She smiled shyly as the girl, Romy, complimented her previous shield charm. She hadn’t realized anybody had been watching, but it felt nice to be recognized for something that she did without any help from her family. “Thanks! I’m Lillian, but most people call me Lilli. Or Lills, either works.” Luckily the other girl had not mentioned her last name, meaning Lillian did not feel obliged to respond in kind. The longer she could remain anonymous the better. “I hadn’t expected the second spell to come quite so quickly,” she explained, fiddling with her wand awkwardly. “I’m sure I’ll be more ready next time. Thanks for, uh, checking on me.”
