It was short notice, but Rafe agreed to substitute the History of Magic class while Professor Smith had gone down with the flu. He was already running 10 minutes late as he had to spend that time reading the hand over notes Professor Smith had left behind to the substitute. Luckily for him and the students, Rafe did quite well in History of Magic. He was no self acclaimed scholar but he knew enough to educate the students along with the notes Professor Smith left behind.
“ Hello everyone. “ He greeted walking in to the larger body of students compared to his normal Muggle Studies class. “ I’m Professor Lauren. I normally teach Muggle Studies but will be covering today’s class while Professor Smith is unwell. “ He replied as he placed his wand, hand over notes and History of Magic textbook on Professor Smiths’ neatly organised table.
“ Today we’ll be focusing on the Witch Burnings of the 14th Century. I know some of you may already know small bits of this and it’ll be great to revives them while it will also be a new topic to some of you. “ He paused as he wrote the topic title on the board behind him.
“Now, why do you think the Muggles decided to burn people they suspected were capable of using magic?” He asked trying to gauge and see what the students could contribute as one of the hand over notes was that Professor Smith had asked all the students to contribute and interact in the class and in bold let’s had a number one rule of no sleeping.

Olivia genuinely hoped that Professor Smith was having a tough time with his flu. The man was unpleasant and strict, but nowhere near as intimidating as Channing - hence Olivia dared to dislike him. His temporary replacement would hopefully be more agreeable. Did the fact that he taught Muggle Studies mean he was a Muggle-lover? The first-year decided to risk testing the possibility.
"For Muggles, destroying something they cannot use is natural - if they can't have it, nobody can. They felt envious and intimidated, and so they tried to erase the power they could not obtain. Not that they were particularly successful - mostly they burned their own people." Why the wizarding world decided to go into hiding instead of squashing such inept enemies was beyond her.

History was an important class, whether it was wizarding or Muggle, as it was supposed to do a lot of things. A reference of humanities progress, a way to avoid the same mistakes, and something to build from. Unfortunately humanity as a whole seemed to like burning and destroying information they didn't agree on, or altering it. Or flat out ignoring things because of their own biases. Dustin, however, would take years to formulate that opinion. For now he was simply curious.
Olivia spoke up and gave quite an interesting view on the witch burning. Confused he raised his hand uncertainly. He didn't want to interrupt so he waited until she was done and he was called upon. He hadn't read a lot about the subject but knew that not many witches or wizards actually got caught up in it. It had been people others considered weird, had a personal problem with, or wanted their lands. "Weren't the witch burning part of the Muggles religions? A um...sort of hysteria? Heresy I think it was called?"

Henrietta couldn't help but scoff at the answers given, particularly from that Mulciber girl. The moment Burke finished, her hand shot up, eager to provide a more nuanced perspective on the topic.
"While jealousy and fear of magic may have played a role, it's important to recognize that the witch burnings were a complex historical event," she began. "Religion and mass hysteria were significant factors, as Dustin mentioned. People often pointed fingers based on superstition and ignorance."
She continued, "We must also consider the broader context of the 14th century – the Black Death, wars, and the start of the Renaissance. In times of instability, people seek scapegoats, and accusing others of witchcraft became a means to assert control or target marginalized groups."
Henrietta paused before addressing the tragic reality of the witch burnings. "It's crucial to remember that most of those burned were innocent Muggles, not actual witches or wizards. Our kind had ways to protect ourselves, but countless lives were lost due to fear and misunderstanding."
She concluded, casting a disapproving glance towards Mulciber, "Ultimately, the witch burnings were a result of religious extremism, social turmoil, and ignorance. Not just because of jealously and fear."

Professor Lauren seemed much more approachable than Smith. It was too early to know if her first impression was correct, but Thalia was already hoping he would teach a few more History of Magic lessons. It wasn't boring yet, at least - although that might have something to do with the novelty of a substitute professor, or the topic of the lesson itself.
Her classmates were already offering answers, and Thalia found she wanted to contribute as well. She waited for the Gryffindor girl to finish her lengthy response before speaking up. "It also had something to do with women, I think. The majority of those who died in the burnings were female. Muggle women didn't have many rights for most of their history." To her knowledge, it was different in the wizarding world. While inheritance rights were still an issue in traditional Pureblood families, other means of oppression weren't possible - not when witches were just as powerful at spellcasting as wizards. "So the ones who were too educated, or too outspoken, were accused of being witches."

“Whoa…” Noah covered his . What a weirdo! Olivia Mulciber clearly disliked muggles. At the orphanage, he’d learned that some people thought muggles were worth less than magical ones. He knew there were people like the Mulciber girl out there, he’d just never met one until now.
He was almost grateful that the next answers made it hard to follow the no-sleeping rule. He listened to the second-year girl from his house answer, or at least he tried to. It was hard when she sounded like an old lady using words like must, crucial… and religious extremism. What was she talking about? Was she only a year older than him? She sounded super smart, but maybe that was because he couldn’t understand anything she was saying. With words like that, she could make stuff up, and he’d never know the difference.
Thalia Burke's answer made more sense to him, and he felt himself nodding while she answered. Out of all the adults he knew, the women were the scariest. It didn't surprise him that wimpy men from the 14th century feared strong women. Girls were scary.
Insuk hoped Professor Smith didn’t have something easy to catch. She didn't want what he had if he was too sick to teach. Missing classes, especially early in the year, was not for her. She looked at her classmates checking for anyone sickly looking. Not seeing any, she made a note to ask her halmeoni for more hand sanitizer, and maybe some vitamin C candies - just in case.
Olivia Mulciber’s answer bothered her. She didn’t like to judge, she was finding it very hard not to stare at the Slytherin girl. It sounded like she thought magical people were different from muggles. There were countless wars throughout magical history to prove she was VERY wrong. Did the first-year hate muggles? Why? Maybe she’d just never learned any different. Insuk needed to know, and it couldn't wait.
“I’m sorry professor, but can we go back to what Olivia said? Do you… really think only muggles do that?”

Rafe let out a small laugh at the interactions between the student body. “ There is a common theme here. “ He stated as he began walking toward the front of the class. “The muggles clearly burned anything they thought was a threat. “ He implied their answers. “ This also isn’t the first documented historical fact we have of the muggles attacking our magical kind. “ He shared allowing himself to slightly share his personal view on the matter.
“While the concept of taking down or if you would, burning people alive due to their beliefs are no different to what we are now. “ He paused before acknowledging the other comments made in the classroom. “ Yes to an extent that the muggles did attack the wizarding community but they did not know how to exclude the magical to the muggle. “ He took a short pause before looking around. “You see, even those that were muggle born during those eras were deemed as heretic and they too were burned along with the innocent and not so innocent. Some even being young children to adults. Not everyone was able to be saved of course. “
“ Understandable it was a different time then. Any form of non-normal activity often meant that one would speculate witchcraft despite not always being correct. The muggles intercept non-normality as a form of danger as it went against their beliefs and their way of life. “
He continued on his lecture by introducing a name. “Wendelin the Weird.” He spoke as he looked around. “Who can tell me what is so unique about this witch and why she has gone down in history and why Wendelin is found on the back of some Famous Witches and Wizards’s chocolate frog cards.“He asked hoping to keep the lesson going and not too bogged down on just one topic.

Some of the other students were already getting into an argument. Thalia supposed that was to be expected when the topic was centered on Muggle and wizarding relations. Since she knew no Muggles personally, she couldn't claim any insight into their psychology. They were probably just as diverse as the magical peoples - some kind, some mean, some outright vile.
The Slytherin couldn't tell if Professor Lauren agreed with that first-year girl who caused the whole disturbance with her answer. He seemed to, in a way... The Muggles clearly burned anything they thought was a threat was more neutrally worded than what Mulciber had said. It had to be true, then. This man was the Muggle Studies professor, he would understand the inclinations of their society better than any student could.
Eager to keep the lesson on-topic, she volunteered another answer. "Wendelin the Weird used the Flame-Freezing Charm when being burned, and enjoyed the sensation so much that she allowed herself to be caught and burned over forty times."

Henrietta's eyes narrowed as she listened to Professor Lauren's response, which she found to be skillfully neutral – a fitting approach, given his role as an educator to young minds. Despite mentioning that this wasn't the first documented instance of Muggles attacking the magical community, alluding to a history of conflict between the two groups, he refrained from expressing a strong bias against Muggles, instead focusing on historical facts. It was an aspect of his teaching that she greatly appreciated.
In truth, she was thankful for the redirection of the topic, as she feared she wouldn't be able to hold her tongue much longer in the face of any more ignorant comments.
Her attention shifted to the Burke girl – not the boy who had spoken earlier, but the girl this time (were they siblings, perhaps even twins?) – who provided a concise answer, albeit with a minor inaccuracy. "Forty-seven," Henrietta interjected, emphasizing the correct number and adding her voice to the new discussion. "It was actually forty-seven times."

Muggle religion was not a topic Olivia had been tutored extensively in. All she knew was that non-magical people used the various faiths as an excuse to initiate conflicts, claim land and riches, and eradicate whole groups of their own people.
She listened to Dustin's answer with mild interest. Once the Gryffindor girl spoke, however, a wave of irritation washed over her. Not only was Wilson providing information Olivia had no way of knowing, but she was doing so with a vocabulary no twelve-year-old should be able to use. Having had numerous tutors, Olivia fancied herself to be well-educated. She took pride in utilizing rare words, which made her stand out among her peers. But sounding as though she was a textbook Transfigured into a person? There was no way she could pull that off. While she understood all the words Wilson used, as well as the meaning of her statements, Olivia knew she herself couldn't string together so many complex terms on the spot. Which, of course, meant that the Gryffindor girl was a show-off.
The Slytherin was already preparing a retort, but other students were talking and she couldn't interject without immediately being viewed negatively by the whole class. She loved being in the spotlight, even when someone was disagreeing with her - but she could also read the room and sense when the tide could turn against her not because of what she was saying, but simply because she was saying it at the wrong time.
Being directly addressed by a Ravenclaw, however, enabled her to give a response. The corners of her lips rose upward ever so slightly. "Only Muggles? Certainly not. Giants do it all the time, too. Trolls, as well." As if she was going to delve into discussions of moral predisposition during a class.
Her initial answer had only been worded in that provoking manner to see how the professor would react, and Olivia was not disappointed. He did not jump into immediate defence of Muggle society, instead appearing to be rather amused - and subtly confirming that the non-magical people did, in fact, destroy what they thought to be a threat. Of course, he had to acknowledge that the wizarding people had their own vices. Fighting over beliefs was something humans did, after all - Olivia could concede to that. This must be what her parents meant by saying that one should not flaunt their views in public. Professor Lauret probably had to remain neutral to keep his job.
As the lesson moved on, the Gryffindor girl insisted on being heard again. What an irksome know-it-all. Olivia had to deflate her bubble. "There were forty-seven known cases of Wendelin being burned, but she was often disguised - there could have been more such instances she wasn't given credit for."

How did Henrietta know so much? Was this taught in Muggle schools too? Dustin felt a tad foolish because he didn't really know all that much. Truthfully, had fallen asleep not too far into the history of magic reading he was supposed to do. It was all a bunch of people attacking other people based on silly and stupid differences. When the topic was changed he was relieved, not sure what he could have said or done to bring the temperature in the room back down. Instead of offering his opinion he simply wrote down some key facts that were relevant to what they were talking about. Let the others talk it out!

While Ella loved learning, and usually would be one to actively engage in such discussions, she found herself beat to the punch time and time again during that class. She could only smile proudly as Henrietta won some well earned points for their house, as well as the fact that her brother contributed to the conversation. While not exactly shy, he wasn’t always the type to answer questions in class, so she was glad to hear him adding to the discussion.
His housemate, Olivia, however, was rubbing Ella the wrong way. She was not being exactly subtle in her biases, nor her competitiveness as she corrected Henrietta’s response. Sure Henrietta had just done the same thing to Thalia, but at least she had been a bit kinder in her response. Or perhaps Ella was a bit biased herself being friends with Henrietta, not that she would readily admit that. “Professor,” she said as she raised her hand. “Since she did wear disguises during most of her burnings, how do we know for certain that it was at least forty seven?” She emphasized, looking pointedly towards Olivia. “Is this from her own recollection? If that is the case, we must be wary of unreliable testimony. Perhaps she simply exaggerated her own exploits.”

Holly walked into the classroom, saw the other students already arrived before she did and took a quick look around to find a place to sit. Finally found a spot to sit, sat down and put her bag on her lap. She started to take her things out of her bag, when the professor said something to them and looked up at him. Tells them he is taking over for Professor Smith today, he said that they will be going over Witch Burnings of the 14th Century and doesn't know if she heard about it before or not. She listens to him, the professor asks a question and didn't know how to answer the question. Other students in the class, started to speak up and listen to them. She was still trying to figure out how to answer, put her eyes back on the professor and listened to what he was saying. Heard him ask a question, haven't heard of witch before and doesn't she have this witch on the back of any chocolate frogs that she has right now. So, she couldn't answer this question, looked over at the girl who spoke up first and let the other students answer the professor.
