It seemed Professor Smith was still too unwell to teach his history class today and Rafe had once again volunteered. To cover until he was fit ad able to teach again. This time, he was given more notice and read over the hand over notes prior to preparing the classroom.
Being first in the room, he opened up a few window shades to allow some light in and a few windows to allow a fresh breeze in and to flow the dust that had accumulated in the room to blow away with the breeze. In the middle of the classroom was a board to where he wrote the topic of today’s lesson and waited as all the students finally settled into their seats before beginning his lesson.
“ Hello everyone, I’m Professor Lauren for those that I’ve not had the pleasure of meeting yet. I normally teach Muggle Studies but am covering for Professor Smith while he’s still feeling under the weather. “ He said providing. Soft introduction before opening up his own textbook. “ If you turn to page 490 it goes on for a few pages about the fascinating concept of wand lore. “ He said in a rather sarcastic and amusing way.
“ Now I appreciate some of you may not enjoy this subject however, I’ll ask you refrain from falling asleep. “ He joked as a bit of laughter echoed in the room making him feel rather proud he was still able to get laugher coming out of this classroom rather than the sounds of snoring.
“ Now, I want each of you to take out your wand and place it in front of you. “ He raised his wand in the air holding it with two fingers in the middle of it. “Over the years, we have always been told that the wand picks the wizard and that wands have feelings. Today we’ll be looking at wand lore and why it has been explored by ancient scholars that date back to over 2000 years ago. In my hand is a Dragon Heart String core wand. “
“ In your Textbooks can anyone tell me if this particular core can learn magic easily? “ He asked waiting for the students to scrim through their textbooks to find an answer. “ First person to answer gets awarded 10 house points. “ He further added to keep the excitement in the class.

Another Muggle Studies professor. The previous one had immediately earned Maeve's scorn, and she had not started liking him any better when he switched subjects. No self-respecting witch or wizard would teach a Muggle propaganda class. Her icy blue eyes watched Lauren with mistrust as she listened to his introduction, the semi-amusing joke that failed to lift the corners of her lips, and finally the information on today's topic.
She knew him to be a pureblood, but not much else. Why had he decided to become the professor of a class that brainwashed magical youths into accepting Muggles as equals? Was he a blood traitor, or was he trying to cause change from within by introducing more accurate information about non-magical people?
True to her habit of displaying erudite qualities, Maeve still raised a hand to answer Lauren's question. "Yes, wands with a dragon heartstring core tend to learn faster. They also produce the most powerful spells." Her own wand, now placed on the table, did not have one of the three supposedly 'superior' cores. Maeve was still considering buying a new wand from Ollivander's just to test if the spells would come out any stronger.

Maybe learning about wand cores and lore might help him understand how and why the gates to his so called mansion back in Australia would only open if one of their wands touched the gate. It was also interesting to see the Muggle Studies Professor delivering this subject. He hadn’t even met the other professor but managed to bump into this professor for two of his subjects. He wondered if this would be the case for next year or if the original professor ever left. Professor Lauren kept the interaction in the room going which was quite refreshing some may also say considering that even here, this subject is seen as a boring topic.

History was the worst subject at Hogwarts, no matter how important everyone said it was. For Tynan it was just boring rehashing of dates and events. Though the Professor having opened the windows to let in a breeze with the sunlight was a great start. Even though it was getting chilly outside he'd rather have the fresh air over the stuffy room any day. Wand lore. Fantastic. That was only really of interest to those going into making wands, certainly not him who had no interest at all. As he took out his want to place it on the desk he frowned down at it wondering if that was really true, that it chose its person.

Lessons that started with 'put your wand on the table' type of orders were usually dull. Certain professors just liked to be sure no student would be using spells secretly during class. Don sighed as he took out his rod of dogwood and placed it in front of him. As the light from the open window hit it, the fourth-year noticed some spots that made it look a little scruffy. Would their wands be inspected as part of today's study? If so, he better clean it a bit.
While his former Quidditch captain answered the question, Don picked up his wand again and tried polishing it with his sleeve. A spray of golden sparks erupted from the tip, some landing on his rolled-up parchment and making it smoulder. Uh-oh. He dropped the wand back on the table and began patting out the writing materials before they could catch fire.

While learning about wands be thrilling to others, Henri found it quite the opposite. No matter how engaging the Professor was, History of Magic was just one of those subjects where it felt like time had slowed down. A yawn escaped his mouth but he was quick to hide it when the breeze from the windows suddenly brought him back to reality. Doing as instructed, Henri opened up his textbook and wrote down the page number into his own notes before looking at the others in the class. Some seemed to look just like him. Forcing themselves to stay awake.

It seemed that Levi was the only one interested in seeing Professor Lauren delivering History of Magic. Sure, Professor Smith was great but he really deny the fact that some parts of the subject was boring let alone being in quite a stuffy room. The breeze certainly did help with the focusing required for such a thrilling subject.
The slight smell of something burning drifted in the air as he began to look around when he noticed Domhnall patting down his parchments. A small laugh escaped his mouth as he leaned over toward him. “ Subtle McEvoy. Subtle. “ He joked before paying his attention back to one of the answers provided which he quickly scribbled down before opening up his textbooks for a topic he was looking forward to learning about.

Calvin waited till the other girl finished speaking before he raised his hand. “ Professor, our textbook seems to focus on three common wand cores but mine is neither of them“ He asked hoping his question had made sense. His eyes scanned the textbook in front of him as he began to flip a few pages across before finally answering his own question.

Rafe waited for a few seconds before the students finally engaged. The first being Miss Thorne. A smile erupted on his face as she answered the question. “Fantastic work Miss Thorne. “ He replied as he began to wave his wand in the air. “10 points to Slytherin. “ He awarded as he continued on with his example.
“ Miss Thorne is correct in that Dragon Heartstrings are capable of using powerful magic at the same time, in the hands of the wrong person, that ability is wasted. “ He replied before quickly glancing at some of the other students. “ These wands are also capable of turning to the dark arts hence caution must be taken if you decide to travel down that path. “ He paused for a second trying to catch anyone attention that was looking at him.
It was here the transfer student spoke up. “ Excellent point Mr.Klein. Here, we have three common wand cores. Now the core alone is what channels the magic but it’s also the Wood used that bring it up a step and allows for a specific type of magic to be stronger than the next wand and wood combination. “
He looked over to the other students in the class before pausing to take a breath. “ Now, some people may have unique wands in the sense that their wood and core are different from the three common woods and cores found here in our wizarding world. People may have a mixture of woods and cores and no wand is ever the same. “ He said faintly quoting his first experience getting his own wand.
“ Now,Two part question. “ He said as he stood up and began to walk to one of the blackboards behind him. “First, who can tell me some of the characteristics of Ebony wood when used in a wand? “ He paused before beginning to write up something on the board listed under homework in bold letters which he left blank underneath for now. Looking around he called out three names at random. “Miss Whelan, Miss Tran and Mr.Mulciber. “ He called out before holding his chalk to the board.
“ Please tell me the wood used in your wand. “

History of Magic was not, by all accounts, the most fascinating subject that Julian had ever taken - yet it had its redeeming qualities. His parents had home-schooled him in his youngest years in a history of the magical world, and the teenager was only just beginning to realise just how bias the schools curriculum was against dark wizards and their magic. At home, he had learned of Merwyn the Malicious, Gellert Grindelwald, Morgan le Fay and Herpo to Foul - wizards and witches that fought against the bureaucracy that had been put in place to contain powerful beings with propaganda and fear mongering. His parents had schooled him in just how extensive the magical world was - and just how much magic was ignored or shunned due to the dangers it possessed when wielded by those unworthy.
So then, with years of being taught the dark magic should be utilized and revered - it was strange coming to a place where History frowned upon darkness and celebrated those same bureaucracies that would attempt to snuff them out.
He had removed his wand and placed it on the desk before him as instructed, mildly interested in the topic at hand. It was refreshing to not be required to hear about some distant war that resulted in the winning side taking control of the narrative and spinning it to their liking. Julian had listened as Maeve explained that a wand with a dragon heartstring core tended to learn magic faster than other cores. He himself did not possess a wand with such a core - in fact, Julian did not hold a wand that contained any of the three superior cores - but that was comforting to him. Being different, and chasing rarer dreams called for a more unique weapon.
His name was then called amongst two others, and Julian looked up to find the Professor waiting for him to answer, back turned as he held a piece of chalk to the board. He did not know the answer to the question concerning Ebony used in a wand as he had not studied much wand lore - and as such, Julian ignored the first question, instead moving on. He did not need to glance back at his own wand to answer the second question, recalling the words spoken to him from his wandmaker back in France: "...hornbeam... surprisingly unyielding...ten and three quarters in length...with a -- ahh, rougarou hair..."
"Hornbeam... Professor." Julian responded flatly, deciding to add in the mans title rather darkly. He did not defer to this mans authority as a Muggle Studies Professor, and rather did not appreciate being called out in front of the class.

Acacia had some catching up to do, which she hated because History of Magic was supposed to be her best subject. She could proudly say that was knowledgeable in actual history, but she was pretty clueless about wand lore. Owner of a dragon heartstring wand herself, she paid brief attention when the core was discussed but zoned out afterwards, hoping to return to the lesson when the 'ancient scholars exploring wands' bit would finally be brought up. Her focus was forced back earlier than she wished by Lauren calling her name among two others.
What bad luck. How did he even know her? She did not take his irrelevant class.
"Cherry, sir." Acacia replied simply, nodding along as if she had been following the discussion.

Having accepted the house points with the faintest hint of a smile, Maeve continued to watch the professor warily. He seemed knowledgeable enough, and so far the lesson was more interesting than what Smith usually prepared. Not that she ever required the way in which academic material was presented to be captivating - as long as it was informative.
When another question was posed, her eyes went to the textbook open in front of her. She had no intention of answering again - the line between being seen as knowledgeable and being reviled as someone who hogged all spotlight wasn't so fine - but she was curious. Lauren was talking about his own wand - first discussing its core, then its wood. One's personality and strengths could be guessed at by knowing these details, even if it wasn't a precise science. The wood Maeve's wand was made of reflected her inclinations quite accurately, at least.
The seventh-year quickly scanned information on ebony. Combative magic. Transfiguration. Highly individual. Not swayed lightly. She looked back up at the professor, wondering how much of this was true about him. Was he a good duelist? Were his Transfiguration skills notable? How about his independence and stability? In all likelihood, she wouldn't get to find out about any of that; it was intriguing to speculate nonetheless.

The Ravenclaw Beater - Levi, was it? - seemed amused by Don's small fiery accident. It didn't embarrass the Slytherin in the slightest. His wand was prone to accidents, especially if he hadn't done anything interesting with it in a while. He remembered being warned about that by the shopkeeper; dogwood was mischievous and could not tolerate boredom. It suited Don just fine. He ignored Hilfiger as he finished patting out the last of the sparks.
A side comment made by Professor Lauren caught his attention. In the hands of the wrong person, that ability is wasted. Had the man looked at him while saying that? He couldn't be sure. Oh, well; what did it matter if another professor started disapproving of him?
"So are wand woods and cores like magical horoscopes?" His mother was fond of those, even though Don could swear they were so generic they could fit just about any person. "Can you actually learn accurate information about a person by knowing what their wand is made of?"
Post by LEVI HILFIGER on Apr 23, 2024 3:42:03 GMT -5
Now it was starting to get even more interesting with what Domhall had shared with the class.Could there be a potential connection between horoscopes and wand lore? His mind began to explore other thoughts as his mind began to wander off into his own lala world. His mind only coming back to reality when a question popped into his mind. “ Going off Dom’s question Professor, if I were to battle Dom and won, would his horoscope or fortune also change?

What was the Ravenclaw boy's problem? Don couldn't remember ever pranking him, so why the derision? After three full terms at Hogwarts - and in the house that had no love for Muggleborns - Don was able to pick up on the subtlest hints of mockery. There was no need to name him as the loser of this hypothetical duel, but Hilfiger did so nonetheless. The fourth-year turned to study the older boy's face, his green eyes devoid of their usual mirth. He rarely ever reacted to taunts; however, there was a difference between being nonchalant and acting like a pushover. Occasionally, a challenge required response - if only to prevent others from trying to bully him. "Fat chance of that, blondie, but feel free to try," he stated with little emotion and in a low voice, so only those sitting nearby could hear.
Although Don's reputation was that of a careless joker, he did participate in a dueling tournament in his second year. Not only did he beat a fourth-year there, he even reached the semi-finals and resisted a seventh-year for a while. Regular attendance of the Dueling Club only improved his skills since then. Levi was only one year older than him; a duel between the two should be equal at the very least.
