Transfiguration was not one of Julian's preferred classes, and so he was already in a rather sour mood prior to the new Professor even walking into the classroom. He had wondered what type of witch or wizard they would be: would they be strict and stoic like his Head of House? He certainly hoped so - as that type of authoritarian learning was one that Julian found most productive. It was obvious, then, when Professor Laurent walked in like a ray of sunshine that Julian was unimpressed and rather suspicious. The witch even went so far to place a vase with a flower on her own desk. He glared at the plant as though it were poisonous.
"...I was an Auror before coming to Hogwarts..." Of course. Julian only felt a deeper distrust of her as Aurors were his families sworn enemies - governmental pawns with a strong grasp of magic and orders to disperse and deconstruct any groups that went against the so-called 'right' side. Julian did not smile at her introductory joke, nor as she continued to speak. His father would have an aneurism if he knew Aurors were teaching his son, though perhaps this could be informative. Julian knew becoming an Auror was an arduous task - so the Professor must have been at least decent in her skills with magic. He would give her a chance - not that he really had any other option.
Vipera Evanseca. He hastily made a note on his parchment, frustrated. A snake vanishing charm? He had no fear of serpents, though making something completely disappear could potentially be a handy spell to learn. If he could vanish a snake - he could perhaps move onto more tricky animals or beings.
Julian replaced his quill in its pot, sighing softly as he joined the line of fourth and fifth years as they waited to practice the charm on an unwilling snake. As he waited, arms crossed, Julian turned his head to watch Thorne conduct the more advanced transfiguration spell on an awaiting dummy - its head successfully turning into a pumpkin on her first attempt. Someone bumped him then, and Julian growled at the contact, gaze instead moving to a mop of brown hair and yellow and black robes. The boy had quickly muttered an apology, which he supposed muted his reaction somewhat. "Watch it, Hufflepuff," his tone even surprised him in its general lack of force, coming out a fair bit softer than he had intended for the boys eyes were downcast, a subtle sign of embarrassment. Julian's own eyes narrowed at him for a moment, taking in the boys appearance before he breathed out, letting residue anger at being touched go - they were in class, after all. And he did not exactly want an Auror Professor on his ass for the first lesson.
He heard the familiar tinge of accent as Klein performed the vanishing spell further up the line. Julian wondered how the fellow transfer student had performed - turning his attention away from the Hufflepuff student and over the heads of the students before him to the empty cage in-front of Calvin - it appeared he had done it first go, just like Thorne. Julian smirked. Pureblood supremacy.
Bumping into someone wasn't exactly ideal especially bumping into a Slytherin let alone Julian Mulciber of Slytherin house. The boy's outburst caused Henri to flinch slightly as his body twitched from the reaction. Henri, who had been finding himself more susceptible to being jumpy stood there in slightly jaw dropped at the boy's out burst considering it was purely accidental.
He'd not made much friends during his time at Hogwarts but it was rare to have someone throw commands at him albeit it be in a soft tone none the less. Julian, the ever confident and sleek looking student coming across with a soft tone was what caused Henri's quick reply to him. " Are you okay?" He asked not that it was any of his business nor did he really care too much and he knew as soon as he uttered a word that Julian would rip into him.
" Sorry." He responded dropping his gaze back down to the floor as he bowed his head avoid any further types of confrontation. " Won't happen again." He replied in a shakingly worried tone as he continued to stare at his raggedy uniform comparing it slightly to Julian's well polished shoes, clean robes and wealth that portrayed without him even trying.

Julian did not miss the flinch as he snapped at the Hufflepuff student, recognising him from several of their shared classes - namely basic healing as it was a smaller, elective class. Julian felt he had also glimpsed the raggedy looking student in Astronomy - pale against the moonlight as they worked in mutual silence, but he might have been mistaken. Astronomy proved to be one of his favourite classes simply because it was dark and rarely required teamwork. He tried to conjure the boys name from memory, but found himself coming up blank. It had not been worth his time to learn.
"Are you okay?" Julians attention went back to the student, aghast at the question, "are you okay? Or does that mop of hair prevent you from seeing what is in front of you?" He spoke quietly, unwilling to allow the Professor to overhear. The line moved up one student.
The Hufflepuff apologized then, eyes moving downwards once more. Julian glared at him for a further brief moment before he calmed himself down, "fine," he responded curtly, hating the fact that he was still in line and surrounded by students on either side. His need for space sometimes felt suffocating. He waited a moment, uncomfortable with impatience, "you take basic healing." It was more a statement than a question. They had never worked together or been paired up in any class, and Julian was not even sure he'd ever heard the boy speak in their shared classes. Perhaps they were alike in that sense.
The line moved up once more - and it was his turn to attempt the vanishing spell next. Julian drew his wand pre-emptively, now hearing the slithering of the various snakes within their cages.

Banishment wasn’t exactly his strongest suite when it came to Transfiguration magic but it was something he had slowly become more interested in. Whilst thinking about a scenario in which using this spell was difficult to picture, Levi decided to just follow along with the instruction and began to practise the spell non-verbally and without a wand. Starting with the incantation which he began to verbalise taking note of the articulation Professor Laurent had used during her explanation. He wondered why the Professor wouldn’t give a display of the spell. Was she not capable of such magic? Surely not considering she was a former Auror.

Henri could only hold back both his anger and tears at what was unfolding before him. The normal Henri would have never even bothered to converse with the Slytherin Monarch known as Julian Mulciber but this is exactly what he found himself doing. However, the only difference was that Henri was about to find himself folding away like a scared dog with his tail between his legs.
He took what Julian had said dead straight in the face as he frowned slightly as he found a reflection where possible. His hair had grown quite the length now that he did have a valid point as it was covering not only his ears but a slight amount of his visual view. Brushing his hair to the side, he took a deep gulp allowing some hidden confidence to come out.
“ Why do you have to be so mean. “ He asked in a soft spoken voice almost as if he was holding back a croak in his voice. Henri was. Unable to afford a hair cut, he had no parents and no source of income on the exclusion of finding coins every now and then. He was grateful that Hogwarts had provided him meal let alone a roof over his head.
“ Umm.” He started to question what was going on. It went from Julian teasing him to what sounds like a conversation or a statement. Probably a statement as he couldn’t see someone as Handsome as Julian speaking to the likes of someone like him. “ Umm. Yes I do. Why?” He asked leaving short pauses in between his sentences wondering where this conversation was going to lead too.

"Vipera Evanesca!" The student ahead cast their spell, though the general lack of cheers from their peers told Julian that they had failed to vanish their snake. The line was stagnant, however, as the student went to try again. Since the Hufflepuff had decided to engage with him, Julian's attention was split between focusing on the class and keeping an eye on his target. Watching the student ahead of him attempt the spell again (and failing again) Julian itched to move ahead. The sooner he was out of this line, the sooner he could return to the solitude of his desk.
"Why do you have to be so mean?" The Hufflepuff student spoke up, and Julian's eyebrows went into his hair, head turning slowly back to the brown-haired badger. He had heard the wavering in the boys tone, and the quietness in which he spoke - an air of embarrassment and subservience obvious in his body language. Frankly, Julian was shocked to hear what sounded like slight confrontation come from him. "It is my nature," he responded simply, still rather under his breath. Truthfully, Julian had grown mean as a defence mechanism for letting anyone in. It was far easier to keep everyone at arms length through cruelty, and to force them away than to risk being hurt. He had learned that lesson early on: that pain was the quickest teacher. Of course, he was not about to explain this to the student beside him.
As he mentioned their joint class, the boy seemed to stumble, uncertain on how to respond. Julian waited stoically, unmoving and still uncomfortable as the boy searched for words, finally watching the student before them give up on his spell and move out of the way. Fresh air. The space before him now free, Julian inhaled. The Hufflepuff responded then, and he absorbed this information, thinking back on their classes. The Hufflepuff had always been a bit quiet, reserved, kept mostly to himself. Perfect. Julian studied the boy for a moment longer before looking ahead, drawing his wand to perform the vanishing spell, "we have coursework due next lesson. Meet me at the library at six." He didn't wait for an answer, instead stepping forward, away from the Hufflepuff to look down at the snakes coiling around one another inside the cage. It was not often that Julian Mulciber extended an invitation to another student, much less request further contact. The Hufflepuff however did not strike him as somebody that would bother him - and anyone with an interest in healing intrigued him.
Julian mustered some command in his voice before casting: "Vipera Evanesca," he targeted a beautiful silver snake as it intertwined with another, the spell making contact through the bars. Transfiguration was not Julian's strongest subject, and in fact, it was one of his less-liked. However, he would not be lazy in learning any new magic - and thrived on results. The snake he had aimed at flashed away for a brief moment, blinking in and out of space several times before reappearing fully in the cage - much to the appeared confused of the others. Julian shrugged to himself, moving away from the line with relief. He would, no doubt, be assigned homework for this class too, given his lacklustre result.
Post by JAROD RAINES on May 12, 2024 22:26:36 GMT -5
Jarod sat in class as he listened and wrote down what the Professor said about the lesson as he tried to practice the spell that he was about to use in that class. He was rather hasitant as he feared that he might mess up and create a mess but tried to convince himself otherwise, as he didn't want to jinx himself or anything like that. Jarod tried not to think of that as he did his best to practice the spell that he had to practice for that class. He refused to give up as he tried to convince himelf that he could do it. Even if he was a bit scared. Also Jarod knew that he could do it, or part of him knew that but he was still scared so just the same. He tried not to think of it as he tried to practice until he was able to do the spell without worrying at all. Jarod believed that he could do it or tried to convince himself of it as much as he possibly could.

Annabelle sat in class and listened to the Professor, as she sighed and practiced the spell before she tried it. She looked around herself as she practiced the spell. Then Annabelle continiued to practice the spell as she hoped for the best. She did believe that she could do that but hoped fot the best just the best as she sat and practiced the spell. Annabelle wished to practice rhe harder spell but she understood that since she repeated the year she couldn't do that but she hoped to sooner or later change that. As she planned to finish her fifth year better and go to her 6th year finally. Annabelle couldn't wait for that to happen. She believed it was aboit to happen soon as she tried not to think if that and focused on the spell as much as she possibly could. No matter what.
Post by JUVIA HIMURA on May 13, 2024 11:21:48 GMT -5
Juvia was exactly five minutes early to this lesson - for rather selfish reasons, she timed it perfectly. She had heard that this new Professor was an Auror and after all, she is all about making connections in order to succeed in her post-Hogwarts life. Juvia was determined to make an impression with the Professor.
To do so, she had to observe only at the beginning. Juvia watched her peers cast the snake vanishing charm, particularly those of peers in her house. She took notes of the mistakes they made, ones for herself to avoid. The scribbles on the parchment she was making were especially fast. In this process, she may have made unintentional eye contact with some of the other Slytherin students. She hoped this wouldn't come with any forced social interactions.
After careful observation, Juvia took the opportunity of her busy classmates whom were already practicing the various spells - and glanced at the different pumpkin heads around the room - and took a snake from the corner of the room. She had close to last pick, so the one she selected wasn't particularly a "pretty" snake by any means. In fact, it was kind of mean looking. Green with unmatching rose tinted scales. Momentarily she wished she could speak the language of the snakes. Juvia brought the snake back to her desk with her.
She knew almost immediately what to do to impress this Professor. Instead of playing a fools game and casting right away, Juvia would take out the formula of Transfiguration scales that she had brought with her from Mahoutokoro. She glanced around once, to see if anybody else had thought to do this as well. Taking a magic measuring tape, she took the measurements of the snake and wrote the results down on the bodyweight (a) portion of the formula. The rest of the formula didn't require much work, for Juvia was already familiar with her level of wand power and concentration. Since this was vanishment, Juvia knew she didn't need a reason to fill in the (z) portion of the equation.
Once the formula was complete, it raised her confidence in being able to cast the spell. Juvia took her wand - and did the wand movement as demonstrated from the textbook. She levelled her eyes with the snakes, believing that eye contact was imperative for making connections with that you wished to transfigure. Knowing that non-verbal is beyond her skill set, she casted "Vipera Evanesca."
The snake vanished with a soft pop, although the spell made a minor crackle noise which implied it wasn't as thoughtful as she hoped the spell would be. Either way, Juvia had kept the Transfiguration formula. She makes quiet edits while the class resumes.

Riko made it on time to class and had gathered her belongings for class, and as she heard the professor instructing the students to take their seats, she looked up. She paid close attention to what the professor was saying, recalling the vanishing spell and finding it quite fascinating. The professor mentioned that the seventh years would be practicing the Melofors and Riko was pleased to be learning about it. When the professor posed a question to the class, she tried to think of the answer. Someone spoke up to ask a question and then a girl said something. The professor gave points to Slytherin, she told the fourth and fifth years to pick a partner to take turns doing their spell, then told the rest of them that she would be observing one by one trying the spell. Riko listened as the professor to practice the incantation, hearing the professor telling the older students to form a line and take turns doing the spell against the training dummies. She follows the other students to stand in line and wait for her turn to do the spell.

Nicha practised the incantation a few times, saying it out loud. Vipera Evanesca - it was a bit longer than incantations they learned in their younger years, but still easy enough to remember. A viper was a venomous snake, and Evanesca was like Evanesco, the general vanishing spell. When she felt sure that she knew the incantation, she looked around the classroom, wondering why fourth and fifth years needed to find partners. Did they have to share the snakes?
Her glance landed on the student beside her, who vanished his sleeping snake very successfully. The black-haired girl gained confidence from seeing this, as well as excitement to try the spell herself. She stepped up to the cage closest to her and pointed her wand at the snake slithering and hissing inside. “Vipera Evanesca!”
With a small puff of black smoke, the snake’s head vanished, but the rest of it remained and thrashed around more energetically at the bottom of the cage. “Ugh… Vipera Evanesca!” Nicha repeated with more viciousness and concentration, thus completing the vanishment. Grimacing, she said to the Ravenclaw next to her who seemed to have seen her spellwork, “I wonder if the snake’s activity affects the success of the transfiguration…”
Post by ACACIA TRAN on May 17, 2024 15:15:00 GMT -5
Acacia could not imagine Melofors coming up in their NEWTs, but she was not yet familiar enough with the tests at Hogwarts to form a clear judgment. It was a spell that existed, albeit for strange purposes, so she guessed it would not hurt to practise it for one substitute class. The difficult thing about using this silly spell was choosing an emotion or frame of mind to employ when casting it. It was what the former Xanadu student had learned to be the most important part of successful spell casting. For example, with the snake vanishing spell, she would feel some disgust toward the serpent and a sincere desire to see it gone. She was not so eager to change anything into a pumpkin.
It was soon her turn to face one of the training dummies. Laurent had mentioned using the spell to cause a distraction. Acacia imagined that the dummy had been annoying her, and encasing its head in a pumpkin would make it shut up. “Melofors,” she said, concentrating hard on her scenario, and was pleased to see a slightly-larger-than-average pumpkin where the dummy’s head once was. However, its colour was beige rather than the vibrant orange that she had hoped to conjure. A frown appeared on her face briefly, and she turned away to join the back of the line again. On her way back she saw from the corner of her eye the Head Girl resuming her seat after just one attempt. She had to remind herself that she had certainly not performed as well as the older girl, that it was only right for her to retry, and that she did not have to feel ashamed or… angry.
Where was Professor Min? Her soulmate? Her reason for living? She paid attention as the professor spoke but these questions were also swirling around in her head. They had to work in pairs as well so she waited to see who was available or willing to partner up with her.

He let out a gasp of air as another crackling sound of a hiss echoed in the room as the students before him cast the spell vanishing the snake before them. A slight distraction from the minor confrontation he was having. His eyes narrowed back to Julian's face for a split second still not being able to look at the boy in the eyes but instead looking at everything else around it. His nose, skin, jaw line and even his eye brows. Anything to avoid eye contact.
Henri jumped when Julian spoke causing him to flinch slightly. "Your nature?" He replied with a head tilt as he looked down at his worn out and dirty shoes as he compared his and Julian's shoes. Clearly there was a wealth difference between them so that perhaps attributed to the personality that Julian had. " Y-you don't have to be mean to me.... " He finally let out in the softest possible voice he could muster with his confidence to speak up.
The conversation took a little turn which finally caused Henri to build the confidence to look Julian in the eyes. " You want to purposely spend time with me?" He asked with a confused tone to his voice. Sure, it was for educational purposes but the thought was still so confusing for the young Hufflepuff. Surely this had to be some form of prank and the thought of Julian wanting to spend time with someone as lowly and poor as Henri made him question the integrity of this proposal.
His mind again got distracted as he watched Julian's attempt at the spell. Why was magic so easy for him? Perhaps the pure blood in him has actually got something to do with his magical prowess. Watching Julian walk away, he did his best to try and stop him. " Six. Library. I'll be there. " He said hoping this wasn't some cruel prank being played out on him.
"Vipera Evanesca!" He called out finally noticing it was his turn to cast the spell. The snake in the cage simply hissed at him as he swished his wand again but only after shaking his head. "Vipera Evanesca!" He called out again this time watching the snake twist and turn before slowly vanishing in front of his eyes.
Post by CALVIN KLEIN on May 18, 2024 4:04:02 GMT -5
Calvin watched as the students before him performed the spell one after the other. "Oh wicked!" He called out watching as some were able to vanquish the snake in one go and others who had taken two or three attempts. Calvin was much more adapt to handling the snakes by hand being an Australian. He grew up in the outback so snakes weren't exactly something to be feared about.
He watched as the Hufflepuff boy took two attempts to vanquish the spell and found himself getting closer. Nicha was able to vanquish the snake after two attempts. His mind began to ponder a thought. I wonder if it's just because they're hubbleypuff and handsome man Julian over there was right about them. Making reference to their encounter prior to the school year.
" Oh, it's a lot bigger close up. What a Beauty!" He replied as he was next in line and began petting the snake's thick body before taking a few steps back. " I think it's about concentration and wit really. " He replied back to Nicha as he too attempted the spell. "Sorry buddy, but I gota pass the course aye. " He apologised to the snake with a soft smile before grasping his wand tightly.
"Vipera Evanesca!" He called out. It was always interesting to hear Calvin pronounce a spell as his Australian accent nearly always vanished with his spells. *da dun tch - Pun of the day* He watched as the snake coiled up and burned within seconds. He was rather surprised himself at how quickly he actually managed to conjure the spell. " Give it another crack?" He asked looking at Nicha.
